Fiat introduced their 126 Model at the 1972 Turin Auto Show. It would serve as a replacement for the very popular and successful Fiat 500. It used much of the same mechanical underpinnings and layout as its Fiat 500 rear-engineed predecessor, along with its wheelbase. It did, however, had a new bodyshell in similar fashion to the Fiat 127. Power was initially from a 594cc which grew to 652cc by the end of 1977 when the cylinder bore grew from 73.5 to 77 mm.
