  • ERA ERA

It had been since 1923 and the French Grand Prix when a British car last had seen victory in a grand prix. Armed with the desire to bring an end to the drought, Humphrey Cook, Raymond Mays, and Peter Berthon bought a lot in 1933 behind the home of Mays and established English Racing Automobiles (ERA). In 1933 governments began investing in the likes of Alfa Romeo and other teams making the costs of competitive grand prix racing rather high. As a result of this, the three men of ERA quickly became disenchanted with their chances in grand prix racing. Instead, the men decided to enter competitive racing through another door, a door through which ERA would become popular for its customer cars. This move would later result in many ERA models filling the field and making an assault for Formula One's first ever title.

Cook, Mays and Berthon gave up on grand prix racing right away in favor of entering the very competitive 'Voiturette' ('small car' in French) class. To be as competitive as possible early model ERAs were designed with a wide range of engines from 1.1 and 1.5 liter supercharged engines to a 2.0 liter normally aspirated engine. Although teams and manufacturers, like Mercedes Benz, were competing in the top grand prix classes, ERA would have no easy go of it in the Voiturette class with companies like Maserati around.

In 1934 ERA entered their first race at Brooklands, and though not as successful as say…Maserati and their debut performances, by the end of the season ERA had scored some rather impressive victories. ERA continued its success in 1935. The most memorable race of that year for ERA had to be at the Nurburing in Germany when ERA machines scored 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th place finishes. From 1935 till before the outbreak of World War II ERA proved to have dominant chassis in Voiturette racing. By Jeremy McMullen
  • 2009 Will Be Final Model Year of Production for Honda S2000 2009 Will Be Final Model Year of Production for Honda S2000

The 2009 Honda S2000 will be the final model year produced of the award-winning roadster, Honda announced today. First introduced in 1999 for the 2000 model year, the S2000 helped define its segment with class-leading handling, engine technology and value. Originally envisioned as a limited-edition tribute to Honda's 50th anniversary, S2000 production was extended in response to customer demand and critical acclaim.

'The S2000 is a sports car designed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts,' said John Mendel, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. 'It raised the bar for all future roadsters, and it's already considered a classic by many Honda fans.'
  • New Porsche 911 GT3 New Porsche 911 GT3

Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is adding yet another new model to the second generation of the 911 model series: the new GT3 even more powerful, faster, and refined than its predecessor.

In developing the most sporting and dynamic road-going 911 with a normal-aspiration power unit, Porsche has applied a wide range of know-how gained in motorsport. Indeed, this is precisely why the new GT3 is truly impressive not only on the road, but also on the race track.

The new 911 GT3 is making its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show on 3 March, with Europe-wide sales starting in May.

The 911 GT3 offers an even higher standard above all in two key areas: performance and driving dynamics. Now the proven six-cylinder naturally-aspirated power unit develops maximum output of 435 bhp (320 kW), up 20 bhp over its predecessor. This results first and foremost from an increase in engine capacity by 200 cc to 3.8 litres and from the improved gas cycle: now not only the intake, but for the first time also the exhaust camshafts are adjusted by VarioCam.
  • Opel To Reveal Ampera Electric Car At Geneva Motor Show Opel To Reveal Ampera Electric Car At Geneva Motor Show

Opel has announced Ampera as the name of its revolutionary extended-range electric car. The five-door, four-seat Opel Ampera will be revealed at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show (March 5-15).

'With the Ampera, Opel will be the first European automobile manufacturer to provide customers several hundred kilometers of non-stop electric driving,' said Alain Visser, GM Europe Chief Marketing Officer.

GM's ground-breaking electric propulsion technology, called Voltec, operates differently from other advanced propulsion systems. For short trips up to 60 km, the Ampera will run only on lithium-ion battery power charged via a standard 230v outlet. For longer distances, the car will continue to drive on electricity that is generated by a small internal combustion engine.

The Ampera will be well-suited to the daily driving schedule of most European customers. For example, approximately 80 percent of German drivers travel less than 50 km daily.
  • SSC Ultimate Aero EV SSC Ultimate Aero EV

SSC will reveal its innovative all-electric powertrain in the current Ultimate Aero, the Guinness Certified 'Fastest Production Car in the World,' to create the Ultimate Aero EV and will reinforce the company as a benchmark in the auto industry. But unlike other auto manufacturers, SSC's new technology will set a new standard in the electric car industry - one of 10 minute recharges, super horsepower and ranges of up to 200 miles per charge.

While other auto manufacturers focus on producing Green technology for specific cars, SSC's focus is on producing Green technologies for a wide range of applications for an even wider range of vehicles. SSC's electric powertrain package, named AESP (All-Electric Scalable Powertrain) is unique due to its scalable horsepower, light weight, compact size, quick recharge time and liquid cooling.

The Ferrari 275 GTB/4 was the most powerful, and technically advanced of the production 275 GTBs. It differed from the earlier models by having dual overhead camshaft cylinder heads on each bank of cylinders, hence the GTB/4 designation. With six double choke carburetors, this engine was an evolutionary step to the 365 GTB/4 'Daytona.'
  • 10+ Liter Club 10+ Liter Club

The 10+ liter cars have been around for a very long time. These large displacement vehicles were often used as promotional tools or to win a race or capture a speed record. The early 1900s saw a flurry of development in this category as design, development, experimentation, and testing continued. Soon, engine sizes rose above 20 liters and quickly neared the 30 liter size. With engines of this size, the weight was extreme, and as a result, performance often suffered.

Here is a growing list of vehicles that have earned the right to be in this exclusive club.
  • Mitsubishi i MiEV Sport Air Concept Mitsubishi i MiEV Sport Air Concept

Whilst the idea of an electric sports car is not new, not much thought has been given by mainstream manufacturers to the proposition of a proper sports car as an electric vehicle (EV) until now.

Blending its sporting heritage with leading expertise in the development of the EV, Mitsubishi Motors is providing a clear new look on the world, in more ways than one. The clear removable top of the i MiEV SPORT 'AIR' will be premiered at the forthcoming 2009 Geneva Motor Show.

Taking a step beyond being merely 'green', this all-electric zero CO2 emission sports concept builds upon the fundamentals of the EV by marrying: the powerful acceleration and high torque inherent to electric motors, the safe driving dynamics that stem from i MiEV's lithium-ion battery pack located within its long wheelbase and the low centre of gravity.
  • Worldwide Auctioneers to offer extensive Californian collection at No Reserve Worldwide Auctioneers to offer extensive Californian collection at No Reserve

Worldwide Auctioneers has announced today that it will sell a significant selection of fine automobiles from the collection of Mr. J. Weinberg, all offered entirely without reserve. The auction will be held on April 3rd and 4th 2009 in Escondido, California.

'The Weinberg collection includes an impressive array of select American classics spanning some six decades', said Rod Egan, Managing Director and Chief Auctioneer. 'It is always a pleasure to be able to offer our customers such a fine array of collector cars that really have a place in the heart of so many Americans'. Among these are a wonderful 1938 Packard Twelve Victoria, exceptional 1956 Desoto Sportsman Convertible, one of only ten factory dual quad examples known, very desirable 1960 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible with factory air and pristine 1954 Buick Skylark Convertible.
  • The Most Expensive Car in 1933 The Most Expensive Car in 1933

This Rolls Royce Phantom II has a long hood, sculpted windows, German silver hardware, a low razor edge roof design, and a dramatic V-windshield. Inside there is gold plated hardware, vanity cases, indirect lighting, and lambs' wool carpets. When new, this Brewster bodied Town Car was $31,000 making it the most expensive car in the world built that year. It was over 50% more than the 'Twenty Grand' Duesenberg created that same year.
  • Porsche GT3 RSR considerably improved Porsche GT3 RSR considerably improved

The Porsche GT3 RSR launches into the new model year with extensive modifications. The most powerful race car based on the Porsche 911, which last year scored wins at the 24 hour races of Le Mans and Spa as well as overall victory at the Nuerburgring 24 hours, competes in the GT2 class at international long distance races. The most distinguishing feature of the new GT3 RSR is the front end which received major improvements to the aerodynamics. The majority of innovations however are hidden under the weight-optimised body.

Aside from the easily recognisable additional spoilers on the front apron, so-called flicks, an optimised air ducting with newly-designed side air outlets generates more downforce and reduces drag. The rear end including the rear wing was taken over from the predecessor. Extensive changes to the suspension cinematics increase mechanical grip considerably. The range of possible suspension set-ups was broadened.
  • Renault R29 Renault R29

Following Renault`s improving performance in 2008, the new R29 is a development in design philosophy aimed at extracting maximum performance from the new aero regulations, slick Bridgestone tyres, and KERS system, whilst further developing the strong features of the R28.

With such radical rules coming into force, particularly with respect to aerodynamics, the team placed great emphasis on maximising the R29's time in the wind tunnel, with aero development already underway by February 2008. CFD has also played a considerable role in the design of the car and has been particularly valuable in understanding the interaction of the aerodynamic package as a whole.

There has been a concerted effort to save as much weight as possible on the R29 to allow for the introduction of the KERS system. As a result, the design team has moved towards using alternative materials and construction methods, such as the carbon-titanium gearbox casing, increased use of MMC aluminium and magnesium.
  • BMW Sauber F1.09 BMW Sauber F1.09

Fundamental changes to the regulations have, in many cases, consigned the fruits of experience to the waste bin. Development work on what will be a radically different race car got underway even earlier than usual.

Indeed, the concept phase for the BMW Sauber F1.09 began back in February 2008. The 2009 car cuts a very different figure from all of its predecessors. Its nose is higher and much wider than before. The huge front wing consists of three elements and stretches across the full width of the car. The car wing, on the other hand, is considerably slimmer - in line with the new regulations - and stands unusually high against the onrushing air. Intricate aerodynamic add-ons, such as air deflectors and cooling air intakes, have been reduced to a minimum. Another eye-catching feature are the sidepods, which now are higher at the front.
  • Arizona Auctions : Report, Pictures and Analysis Arizona Auctions : Report, Pictures and Analysis

It was a spectacular array of auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona as the major auctions houses - including Barrett-Jackson, Russo & Steele, Silver Auctions, Gooding & Company, and RM Auctions -brought a vast assortment of vehicles in hopes of seducing buyers in this unstable economy. Despite the downturns in the stock and housing market, many of the auction houses reported that the number of registered bidders had increased over prior years. From muscle cars to European sports cars, from antiques to classics, modern production cars to customs, and from motorcycles to airplanes, the selection was all encompassing.

Arizona in early January offers over 1,700 vehicles to admire which sits well with even the causal automotive enthusiast. Vehicles aside, the cloudless, 70-degree weather and gorgeous scenery was a welcomed sight to the below zero-degree temperature that many other parts of the country were experiencing. It would be hard to be an auto enthusiast and leave Arizona unhappy.
  • Vodafone McLaren MP4-24 Mercedes Vodafone McLaren MP4-24 Mercedes

The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team today launched the car it will campaign in the 2009 FIA Formula 1 World Championship at its headquarters in Woking, England.

Unveiled by world champion Lewis Hamilton and his team-mate Heikki Kovalainen, the new MP4-24 bears little resemblance to its world championship-winning predecessor due to the introduction of a raft of new rules that have reshaped Formula 1 ahead of the 2009 season.

Now featuring heavily revised bodywork, re-sculpted front and rear wings, slick tyres and a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS), the MP4-24 has been in development since September 2007 in order to successfully accommodate the huge changes to the technical regulations.

The team has already completed two MP4-24 chassis and begins publicly testing at the Autodromo do Algarve circuit in Portugal on Monday. Test driver Pedro de la Rosa will conduct the first two days before Lewis (Wednesday) and Heikki (Thursday) sample the car.
  • Williams FW31 Toyota Williams FW31 Toyota

The Williams-Toyota FW31, the team's 2009 season race car, made its track debut at the Algarve Motor Park circuit in southern Portugal this morning at the first official Formula One test of the year.

After completing 17 laps this morning in the hands of AT&T Williams' test driver, Nico Hülkenberg, the team was satisfied with initial progress. Technical Director, Sam Michael, said, 'This morning has been full wet, but the weather hasn't really affected what we wanted to do, because our goal has been to get the car out on track, check all the systems work, be sure parts aren't touching each other, nothing is burning, and that's all proved to be okay. It would be good to get some dry running, and the weather should allow this later in the week. In terms of first impressions of the car, we of course haven't spent any time on set-up or performance work yet, that'll all come later, but so far the car is running fine.'
  • Extra Incentive Extra Incentive

This 1937 Bentley 4.25 Liter Fixed Head Sport Coupe had an estimated value of $900,000 - $1,400,000 at the Gooding & Company Auction. That price seemed fair, but the announcement of an open invitation to show this car on the green at the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours was an added bonus. As one would expect, there was much interest in this vehicle. Bidding quickly rose to $1.2 million (hammer price) and into the arms of its new owner.

This Vesters & Neirinck Bentley is among the most marvelously preserved original cars in existence. Since it was delivered to M. Lang in 1937, the car has covered just over 35,000 kilometers. It wears the vast majority of its original paint and the interior displays a glorious patina from over 70 years of careful use. Beyond its incomparable condition, the design remains one of the most beguiling automotive forms ever created. It is, after all, a singular design from one of Europe's great firms and its style and elegance immediately draw comparisons to the great Embiricos Bentley. This coupe is a sensory delight, and there is not an angle from which its lines are unflattering.
  • $4.4 Million Was Not Enough $4.4 Million Was Not Enough

Many people did their best to purchase this Ferrari 250 GT SWB Competizione with chassis number 1759GT. Bidding rose quickly to $4 million and then crept up to $4.4 million. Sadly, it was not enough to sell the car at the Gooding & Company Auction.

1759 GT is one of the earliest Short-Wheelbase Berlinettas ever built. Moreover, it was one of the first SWBs campaigned by Ferrari in its bid for the 1960 Manufacturers Championship. This car is currently presented in its 1960 Le Mans livery and is equipped with the handsome, early version of the crackle-finish dashboard, unique competizione features and includes its original engine, TdF-style wheels and the Snap exhaust system that the car raced with at Le Mans in 1960. 1759 GT boasts an unparalleled preparation, extremely authentic restoration and a history that is beyond reproach, with an impressive record at the world's most important racing events. The Short-Wheelbase Berlinetta is a racing legend, a landmark design and a virtually guaranteed entry into any prestigious international event where it will be a staunch competitor on or off the track. The SWB remains one of Ferrari's finest, and is the last great dual-purpose sports car ever constructed in the Golden Era of GT racing.
  • A Formula One Car for the Road sells for $1.150 Million A Formula One Car for the Road sells for $1.150 Million

The hammer price for this modern day masterpiece was $1.150 million, making it one of at least five vehicles to go over the million dollar mark at the Gooding & Company Auction. Amazingly, in the five years since this Ferrari Enzo left the factory, it has been driven sparingly, accumulating just 429 miles.

The great Enzo Ferrari felt that design of his road-going cars should stem from the successful racers. The Enzo is an outstanding expression of a modern dual-purpose sports car and the epitome of that philosophy. In the five years since its introduction, the Enzo has more than lived up to its esteemed name.
  • The High Sale of the Gooding & Company Auction The High Sale of the Gooding & Company Auction

The most significant Ferrari find in a generation. A California Spider is one of the few open cars to look as sporting with its top raised as it does when stowed. A covered-headlight SWB California Spider is one of the automotive greats, a car that has a timeless and universal appeal – everyone from the casual passerby to the die-hard automotive enthusiast cannot help but cast their eyes in the direction of such a masterpiece.

After many bidders did their best to win this 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider (chassis number 1963GT), this No Reserve vehicle found a new home for the sum of $4.5 million!
  • What Recession?!! What Recession?!!

Apparently, some individuals have not received the memo that we are in a recession. As the hammer fell for the third and final time, this amazing 1937 Talbot-Lago T150 C SS Tear Drop Coupe fetched $3.2 million (hammer price). It was one of the stars of the auction, but not the highest sale of the day. There were plenty of other multi-million and six-figure cars with a total of $31.8 million of sales throughout the day.

This 1937 Talbot-Lago T150 C SS Teardrop Coupe, chassis 90105, is the fourth of a mere 14 T 150 C SS chassis built and one of only a handful of the desirable New York models ever produced. The New York models are considered to be the most spectacular and cohesive examples of the Tear Drop – the identifiable example of this landmark design. A distinctive car from new, this was the only Tear Drop to be constructed without a sunroof, giving the car an even purer and more purposeful shape than the cars fitted with this option.
  • Marmon Sixteen Convertible Sedan Marmon Sixteen Convertible Sedan

Selling for $300,000 plus buyer's premium at RM Auctions, this Convertible Sedan fell within the estimated value. It is the only open Marmon to have cloth upholstery. It is very likely the last of the Style 145 convertible sedans, as its body number, 549, is higher than the highest known number. Marmon Sixteens are, by any measure, rare. This car is singular. From its first ownership in the hands of the Marmon family, through prestigious collections with an abundance of trophies and awards, it has a provenance that is hard to equal

The Marmon 16 was produced for just three years, with a total production of some 400 cars. Marmon discontinued production in 1933 - the worst year of the Great Depression. During its short life, Marmon pioneered the use of the rear view mirror, V-16's and the use of aluminum in automobile manufacturing.
  • Multi-Million Dollar Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Multi-Million Dollar Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport

At RM Auctions 'Automobiles of Arizona' Auction, this vehicle was one of the highlights. Bidding reached $5 million yet it still was not enough to secure new ownership. Some rumors were that it was worth upwards of $7 million!! It is a very rare and special car that has a great history and equally impressive performance.

Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport 002 is one of the most important historic sports-racing cars of all time. Its restoration, history and condition are, however, only a small part of the halo that surrounds it and suffuses the memories of those who see it with the bright glow of history.
  • So Close, Yet So Far So Close, Yet So Far

There was plenty of interest, and the bids continued to climb. It peaked at $4.4 million, but sadly it was not enough to purchase this 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante. Three cars prior to this one to cross the block - a Ferrari 250 GT TdF - was estimated to sell for $2.0 - $2.5 million. Bidding had reached $1.8 but it too failed to satisfy its reserve. With buyers still willing to spend millions to purchase these rare and elegant machines, it's hard to pin these no-sales strictly on the economy. Perhaps, the estimates were too high? (The reserve and the estimated value for the Bugatti was not published so it is difficult to determine how close the bidding was to making it a 'sale.') A few suggestions for why these vehicles did not sell were 'not the right car, not the right buyer, not the right price, buyers were not willing to spend except if they were guaranteed a bargain.'

Another highlight that failed to find a new home was the 1963 Chevy Corvette Grand Sport. Bidding went as high as $5 million; the estimated value and reserve was not announced, but rumor was that it could have been as high as $7 million.

A gorgeous Dodge Firearrow III Concept sold for $800,000. It was below the estimates but still a very solid price. A Ferrari 275 GTB sold for $835 and a Jaguar XJ220 went for $140,000 - both were also below the estimates.

A few of the highlights did not sell, but there were plenty of strong sales throughout the low and mid-range figures. Attendance was very high with nearly every seat occupied and many standing in the back and in the isles. An RM insider mentioned that the number of registered bidders had increased over prior years. The lot of cars were sensational and perhaps their best selection to-date at this event.
  • Toyota TF109 Toyota TF109

TF109 – or Toyota Formula 1 2009 to give it its full name – is hot property. The first images revealed a stunning production which combines the latest technology with a very human passion to succeed. This potent combination has been working on TF109 since October 2007.

In a departure from recent Panasonic Toyota Racing productions, TF109 takes on a new shape, dictated by the FIA, with wider front wings, narrower rear wings and fewer additional aerodynamic devices the fashion for 2009.

The script may be different but Panasonic Toyota Racing has set its usual high targets for TF109. Chairman and Team Principal Tadashi Yamashina states: 'Our target this year is to fight to win the first race for Toyota in Formula 1.'
  • 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante

This 1937 Bugatti Type 57Sc Atalante Coupe is one of the highlights for RM Auctions 'Automobiles of Arizona.' It, along with over 100 other vehicles, are to cross the block on January 16th at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa.

This 1937 Bugatti Atalante Type 57 SC (Supercharged) is one of only seven ever manufactured and was originally owned by the Harrah's Collection at Reno, Nevada. The streamlined Atalante coupe is sometimes considered the most handsome body to have been made for the Bugatti Type 57.

For the first time, Bugatti mounted the 4-speed manual transmission integrally with the engine. The 3,257 cc (3.3-liter) twin overhead-cam, in-line, 8-cylinder engine developed 200 horsepower and had a top speed of 112 miles per hour. The coupe weighs 3,415 pounds.

A very special car, among hundreds of other impressive vehicles, is to cross the legendary Barrett-Jackson Auction block. This is Sydney Allard's personal, unique and famous one-off car, the 1947 Steyr-Allard, and is the most well-known of all of the Allard vehicles. Built in 1947, Sydney Allard competed in the British Hill Climb Championship with this car for 5 years finishing 3rd in 1947, 3rd in 1948, 1st in 1949, 2nd in 1950 and 3rd in 1951. The car held records at various hill climb courses and sprint events that it competed in. After being sold in 1952, the car continued to successfully compete in numerous events until the early 1960's before being acquired by the current owner in 1994 and then fully restored to active competition levels in 2001. This car has been fully documented in hundreds of books and magazine articles over the years.

This 1932 Daimler Double Six 40/50 Sport Saloon is, without question, one of the most imposing automobiles ever constructed by the legendary British marque or any maker of exclusive luxury vehicles. While only 26 Double Sixes were built over a decade, the vast majority had a smaller displacement and short chassis. Among this rarified group, this 1932 Daimler Double Six stands out. It is a second-generation, long-wheelbase example of the Double Six fitted with the revised 40/50 engine that allows for a top speed in excess of 80 mph.

This car is just one of the 100 vehicles scheduled to cross Gooding & Company's auction block on January 17th.

This Bugatti Type 37 is scheduled to cross Russo & Steele's Auction block on Saturday Evening. It is part of their Scottsdale, Arizona Auction of which there are over 500 vehicles offered for sale. All vehicles are presented with reserve.

A tremendously successful and popular little car, the Type 37 was introduced as a durable and easy to work on racer to supplement Bugatti`s sophisticated and complex Grand Prix cars. Type 37s were successful in the Voiturette class (under 1500cc), and their 1496cc plain bearing coil ignition motors were much easier to maintain than Bugatti`s full-on GP offerings. This particular car is a painstakingly recreated example that uses Bugatti Club parts, and as such, every component has passed their scrutiny and would be accepted as a correct replacement part for use on an original Type 37.

  • Cadillac Presidential Limousine Cadillac Presidential Limousine

As Americans celebrate the inauguration of a new president of the United States next week, another new Cadillac will grace Pennsylvania Avenue to lead the proceedings. President Barack Obama will ride in an all-new Cadillac Presidential Limousine, continuing a long tradition of Cadillac limousines that have served many U.S. presidents.

'Cadillac is honored to again provide a new Presidential Limousine,' said Mark McNabb, North America vice president, Cadillac/Premium Channel. 'This is a great American tradition that we're delighted to renew with an all-new car featuring the best of Cadillac's dramatic design and technology.'

The image of an American president greeting crowds from a Cadillac limousine dates to President Woodrow Wilson and the early days of the automobile, and continues into a historic new era. The latest Cadillac Presidential Limousine is a completely new design, succeeding the DTS Presidential Limousine that debuted in 2004. The new car incorporates many of the dramatic design and technology features of new and highly acclaimed Cadillac vehicles in a purpose-built format tailored to specific and exacting specifications befitting presidential transport.
  • Detroit Auto Show : Report and Gallery Detroit Auto Show : Report and Gallery

Autoshows are a means for the collective automotive production community to showcase their current model line-up and to highlight what they have planned for the future. What has been highly sought-after real-estate in past years, was open and vacant this year, as several prominent manufacturers were surprisingly absent. The Cobo Conference center felt vacant; the press conferences were fewer, attendance was lower, and the number of new concepts and debuts all decreased.

Those automakers in attendance did things much differently this year. The booths, displays, high tech lights, sound systems, and amenities commonly found in prior years were no more. With many questions lingering around the multi-billion dollar bail-out, it was clear that automakers were playing it safe, and keeping spending to a minimum.

Most of the news centered on fuel economy and small vehicles. Only a few dared to mention anything to do with super or muscle cars. Many of the concepts were basically 'production previews' and the debuts were practical. It is clear the future of the industry will be both high tech and electric.
  • Fisker Karma S Concept Fisker Karma S Concept

Fisker Automotive, the new American manufacturer of premium green automobiles, unveiled the Fisker Karma S concept at the 2009 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) today. The four-seat, plug-in hybrid hardtop convertible furthers the company's belief that driving style and performance need not be compromised for environmental friendliness.

The open-air Fisker Karma S concept shares its aluminum spaceframe architecture and clean Q-DRIVE powertrain with the Fisker Karma sedan. Designed and engineered by Quantum Technologies exclusively for Fisker Automotive, Q-DRIVE provides 50 emission-free miles on a single charge to its lithium-ion battery pack, and up to 403hp from two electric motors. The power retractable hard top, a first for Fisker, glides neatly into the trunk and a unique design language sets the Karma S concept apart.

  • Russo & Steele : Jaguar XJ13 Russo & Steele : Jaguar XJ13

This mid-engine Jaguar XJ13 is scheduled to cross Russo & Steele's auction block on Friday evening.

The Jaguar XJ13 is one of the most visually appealing cars of all time. It carried a nameplate of one of the most successful marque's at LeMans during the 1950's, Jaguar, with five wins in just seven years. The engine that conjured up the wins for the British marque was a direct descendent of the famed XK six-cylinder that could be found in their successful and stunning line of road going vehicles. Jaguar's reign at LeMans was brought to an end when their D-Type was made obsolete due to new racing regulations which limited engine displacement to just three liters. Jaguar returned to LeMans a few years later with a racing version of their E-Type but it was no match for the potent Ferrari's.

This example is an alloy/fiberglass recreation finished in British Racing Green and powered by a production based Jaguar V12 engine and mated to a rear drive ZF gearbox. The engine has been modified to displace 7-liters and is capable of 500 horsepower. The interior features Connolly leather and fitted with all the correct gauges and switches. Other unique items are an air-conditioning, 17-inch Compomotive wheels, custom made glass windshield, Centerforce performance clutch, and a custom made engine and ignition management system.
  • Ferrari F60 Ferrari F60

The F60 is the fifty fifth single-seater built by Ferrari specifically to compete in the Formula 1 World Championship. The name of the car was chosen to celebrate the Scuderia's participation in all 60 editions of the Formula 1 World Championship since 1950 to date.

The project, which goes by the internal code name of 660, represents the Scuderia's interpretation of the regulations that come into force this year, which include very many new elements. As far as the aerodynamics are concerned, these modifications are the result of the work carried out by the OWG (Overtaking Working Group,) set up by the FIA in collaboration with the teams to produce a set of rules aimed at encouraging more overtaking on track: the front wing, which has a neutral central profile, common to all, is developed mainly on its side elements and is much wider than in the past: the bodywork can no longer carry the slotted apertures that had characterised the Ferrari cars over the past few years.

Other aerodynamic devices are also significantly reduced; the rear wing is higher and narrower than in the past; the diffuser has been moved rearward. The combination of changes naturally led the initial design phase down radically different routes when it came to the side pods and protection components: the apertures have been reduced in size and moved rearward, while the upper and rear elements are larger to aid the exit of air.

The Media Days for the 2009 Detroit Auto Show begin on January 11th; a few days later, the doors will open to the public. Gas prices have since decreased, but for how long is still a mystery. Coupled with the questionable economy and the shaky fate of many automakers, it was no surprise that nearly every debut centered on fuel economy and efficiency.

  • Volkswagen Bluesport Concept Volkswagen Bluesport Concept

Volkswagen is starting the new year by presenting an automotive dream – an affordable, uncommonly economical and highly agile mid-engine roadster. Its name: Concept BlueSport. Status: concept. Dynamics: pure. Fuel consumption: an average of 42 mpg / 4,3 l/100 km (combined; Highway: up to 50 mpg); less than any other sports car. Positioning: genuine, low-emissions roadster (113 g/km CO2) that makes every kilometer, every mile a driving experience.

Behind the two sport seats of the 3.99 meter long Concept BlueSport (axle load distribution: 45:55) is an exclusively charged TDI or TSI engine that delivers dynamics – these are high-tech engines that consume little but put out a lot. In the case of the Concept BlueSport version now being presented in the USA it is a 132 kW / 180 PS strong Clean Diesel (TDI) with common rail injection and downstream NOx storage catalytic converter. At a low 1,750 rpm – i.e. right from the engine speed ‘cellar' – the 2.0 liter turbo engine develops its maximum torque of 350 Newton-meters. That matches the power response of an approx. 300 PS strong six-cylinder gasoline engine! A 6-speed dual clutch transmission – the most economical and agile transmission system in the world – transfers this power to the rear wheels. It is shifted either automatically or via shift paddles on the steering wheel. In just 6.2 seconds the sports car is moving at a speed of 60 mph (0-100 km/h: 6,6 seconds); its top speed is 140
    mph (226 km/h).

  • The Maserati 4CLT The Maserati 4CLT

It is true that failure can lead to success. By Formula One's first season in 1950, Maserati was Maserati in name only. Financial trouble led to the brothers selling the company and moving on. But when a person's hand is applied to what the person is born to do there will be an impact. And in this case, the whole band of Maserati brothers were born to build racing machines. Yet, while having to sell and ultimately leave their namesake, their final designs would still play an important role in grand prix racing and Formula One's inaugural season.

In 1914, Alfieri and Ettore Maserati decided to establish their own race-tuning business. Almost as soon as they started they had to suspend activity due to World War I starting. Upon cessation of hostilities, in order to promote their work, the brothers would tune their own cars and then would race them. This caught the eye of the Diotto company. Diotto then approached the Maserati brothers, which by this time included another brother Ernesto, about designing grand prix cars. The brothers agreed and, in 1925, went to work. However, the design the brothers would create would end up never being built. Very soon, the brothers decided to start their own company and only design and build cars of their own. And so, one of Maserati's first cars would be the design Diotto decided not to have built. The Maserati brothers ended up building the car and would enter it in the 1926 Targo Florio.

This Ruxton Model C was in the same single-family ownership since 1953 before being brought to auction in August of 2008.

After putting 3,700 miles on the car, all done in fair weather, the car was sold in 1953. In 1990 it was stripped down to bare metal and given a complete restoration. It was finished in two-tone blue with a silver pinstripe. It was then shown at Silverado in Napa Valley where it received First Place honors. It was later shown at Pebble Beach.

The Ruxton is a forgotten manufacturer, often overlooked when considering early pioneers in automotive design and mechanics. One of their biggest automotive achievements was the use of front-drive automobiles. In 1966, Oldsmobile introduced the Toronado, a front wheel drive vehicle and the only American built front-drive vehicle since the Cord. When Ruxton introduced their version, it was roughly the same time that Cord introduced theirs however it was Cord that survived longer.

The new 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 delivers the most power and refinement ever for a Ford SVT-tuned performance Mustang – and a few surprises, too.

'The 2010 Shelby GT500 demonstrates Ford's continuing commitment to high-performance vehicles,' said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. 'In addition to the numerous performance and refinement improvements inside and out, the 2010 Shelby GT500 is an estimated 2 miles per gallon more fuel efficient on the highway.'

'We're proud of the many enhancements that were developed jointly by the Ford and Shelby Automobiles team last year that we've now incorporated into the new 2010 Shelby GT500,' said Carroll Shelby, founder of Shelby Automobiles. 'Building on what we learned to create the Shelby GT500KR, this new car offers a great combination of power, handling and braking. It is truly a special car that is a great deal of fun to drive.'

Ford's Special Vehicle Team used the gains made on the 40th anniversary edition Shelby GT500KR 'King of the Road' Mustangs as the performance starting point and built from there. The design team, with a nod to the original Shelby Cobras from the 1960s, takes those design cues even further with nuanced improvements in both the coupe and convertible, each of which boasts a more-refined interior.
