  • 2011 Ford Mustang V-6 Goes High-Tech 2011 Ford Mustang V-6 Goes High-Tech

The 2011 Ford Mustang puts 305 high-performance horses in the hands of V-6 coupe buyers with a new all-aluminum dual-overhead cam (DOHC) engine that delivers a projected 30 mpg on the highway with a six-speed automatic transmission and fun for drivers on nearly every road.

For 2011, Mustang's new 3.7-liter Duratec 24-valve V-6 uses advanced engineering to deliver its power and economy: Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) adjusts the valvetrain in microseconds. Aluminum construction means light weight. It's an engine designed to crank out torque down low, rev to 7,000 rpm and deliver the mechanical music sports coupe lovers crave everywhere in between.

'Mustang is completely transformed with this new engine,' said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. 'Everything people love about the car is still there and now under the hood is a V-6 engine that uses premium technology to deliver the power, the feel, the fuel efficiency, even the sound of the best sports coupes in the world.'
  • Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR Recaptures Lap Record at Laguna Seca Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR Recaptures Lap Record at Laguna Seca

The Street and Racing Technology (SRT) team from Chrysler Group LLC arrived at Laguna Seca raceway today on a mission – to recapture the production car lap record at the world-renowned road course in Monterey, Calif. Mission accomplished.

Chris Winkler, an SRT vehicle dynamics engineer piloted a black and red 2010 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR (American Club Racer) to a lap record of 1:33.915 as recorded by Motech in-vehicle data recorder (1:33.944 - as unofficially recorded by trackside clock) around the 2.238-mile, 11-turn course, shattering the previous lap record by more than 1.1 seconds.

'It was definitely exciting but a somewhat uneventful lap overall from behind the steering wheel,' said Winkler, who is still learning the intricate details of Laguna Seca raceway, having spent only one other session on the course. 'The Dodge Viper ACR has amazing power and handles like a dream, so following my first practice here last month, I came away pretty confident that we'd be able to set a new record.'
  • Safe, Serious Tuning – A Mission for the Company and the Customer Safe, Serious Tuning – A Mission for the Company and the Customer

'Only serious, safe tuning will bring the hoped-for driving pleasure!' Under this motto, the Association of German Car Tuners (VDAT) every year launches a special concept car. In 2010, BMW AG is providing a BMW 123d Coupé for the Association's 'TUNE IT! SAFE!' initiative, which is also supported by the Police and the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Road Development. Most of the vehicle accessory equipment has been supplied by Aachen-based BMW tuning specialist AC Schnitzer.

As in the last four years, a police vehicle has been professional converted as part of the promotion. The AC Schnitzer 'ACS1 2.3d', based on the BMW 123d Coupé, shows that safe tuning is far from boring. VDAT-member AC Schnitzer has upgraded the 2.3 D engine to 241 HP (177 kW) and 480 Nm. The police car with 6-speed automatic transmission now accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds, so would acquit itself well even in the fastest pursuit. The latest AC Schnitzer wheels Type IV BiColor are fitted with tyres from TUNE IT! SAFE! main sponsor Hankook. The low, safe road position is achieved with the sports suspension from the Aachen-based specialist with 30 mm lowering. The bodystyling kit consists of two-piece front spoiler, rear skirt insert, rear wing and rear roof spoiler. Good visibility is ensured by the 'LEDayFlex' modern daytime running lights from Hella, and optimum rearward vision by the AC Schnitzer 'New Generation' sports mirrors.

  • Chrysler Thunderbolt Chrysler Thunderbolt

The 1941 Thunderbolt was Chrysler's response to GM's Y-Job Idea Car from 1938. Designed by Ralph Roberts and Alex Tremulis, the Thunderbolt featured a streamlined body with a retractable hardtop.

The Thunderbolt appeared in the 1940 Car Show circuit as an 'idea' car, the idea being good aerodynamics. Chrysler somewhat revisited streamlined design, previously used on the 1934 Airflow, and named it Thunderbolt. The name was chosen because of its association with a previous land speed record holder at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

The LeBaron-built body is aluminum, except for the structure for the hood and deck lid, and sits on a New Yorker chassis. The engine is a 323.5 cubic-inch inline-eight that delivers 140 horsepower. The power is transmitted to the wheels by a smooth Fluid Drive transmission with an overdrive unit that allows speeds of up to 100 mph. Four cars survive of the five that were reputedly built.
  • Delage D8-120 Delage D8-120

Introduced in late 1929 and noted for its six-foot long hood and graceful sweeping fenders, the Delage D8 was among the most handsome cars of its era. The D8-120 was one of several later versions of this luxury car. This example is the prototype Aerosport Coupe, and was exhibited at the 1937 Paris Salon on the Delage stand, where it was purchased on the spot. Reaction to the car was so positive that six more were built. The car remained with the original owner until 1953, when it was sold to the Mashek Collection, where it remained until 2004. It has since been very sympathetically restored to its original colors and configuration.
  • ISO Rivolta Varedo ISO Rivolta Varedo

In the early 1970s, Piero Rivolta decided that because his company was racing in Formula one, they needed to add a mid-engined supercar to their lineup of sports and GT cars. Rivolta hired Ercole Spada, a veteran designer from Carrozzeria Ghia, to be the chief stylist. The car was named Varedo to honor the town in which their new factory was located. Piero decided that he wanted a pure performance car, so the body was made of fiberglass. It was equipped with a Ford 351-ci engine and ZF 5-speed transmission, and was quite a hit when it debuted at the 1972 Torino Auto Show. After the car was mechanically sorted out, it was found to be a great handling vehicle during testing at the Monza race track. Unfortunately, not too long after this, the Rivolta family sold its interest in their company, and the project died without the Varedo ever being introduced as a production model.
  • Packard Grey Wolf Packard Grey Wolf

The Packard Grey Wolf is one of the most famous cars of early racing history. In 1901, the Packard brothers went to Europe in search of an engineer to design their first four-cylinder automobile. Charles Schmidt agreed to accompany them if he was allowed to build a race car to demonstrate the performance of the new Packard Model K. Only one example was built, at a cost of $10,000, and in January of 1904, Mr. Schmidt set two land speed records at Ormond Beach, FL, in the Grey Wolf. The original car won several other races, was wrecked several times. This example is a recreation of the Grey Wolf, from the original Packard plans. Every part was made exactly per the blueprints, 100 years later. The car returned to Ormond Beach in 2004 to re-enact the land speed record attempt.
  • Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept

The Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept Car shows a possible future for hybrid vehicle technology and is being used to highlight Subaru's announcement that it will develop a gas/electric hybrid system based on Subaru's boxer engine for launch in 2012.

The interior highlights a grand touring concept focused on interior volume and comfort. It features four independent seats with open spaces surrounding the occupants. Through clever packaging of the AWD system, a flat floor design is created allowing increased leg room for rear seat passengers.

Powering the Hybrid Tourer is a 2.0-liter horizontally-opposed direct fuel-injection turbo gasoline engine that improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. The turbo has been designed to improve engine responsiveness and environmental friendliness and utilizes Subaru's Lineartronic (CVT) mated to a new Hybrid system that incorporates Symmetrical AWD. The powertrain features a unique gas/hybrid two-motor system with an electric power/drive motor in the front and another drive motor in the rear. The electric motors are powered by new high-performance lithium batteries.

  • Austin-Healey Sprite Prototype Austin-Healey Sprite Prototype

This car was one half of a two-car team entered in the LeMans 24-Hour race in 1966. Because the cars practiced so well and because the French were worried about their cars being beaten in the small bore category, team manager Geoffrey Healey was told the cars could not compete in their bright orange livery (painted that way for safety). So quickly over night, the cars were painted in British Racing Green and allowed to compete. The car finished 18th overall with drivers Paddy Hopkirk and Andrew Hedges. The next year, 1967, the car was repainted orange and entered in the Sebring 12-Hours, where it finished 13th overall with Clive Baker and Raune Aaltoen as drivers. Its last professional race was the 1970 Daytona 24 with Jacksonville drivers William Harris and Robert Lewis, where it finished 33rd overall.

  • Ferrari 250 GTO Ferrari 250 GTO

Not all Ferrari 250 GTOs are red. The unusual colors on this car reflect its early race history in Sweden. Before going to Sweden in the summer of 1963, it raced at LeMans, in the Tour de France, and in the Paris 1000 Kilometers at Monthlhery in 1962. It finished fifth overall at Sebring in March of 1963.

This car was originally obtained by Count Giovanni Volpi (SSS Scuderia Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia). It was driven by Vacarella and Scarlatti, two works Ferrari drivers of the period, in the 1962 24 Hours of LeMans, and won outright the Nine Hours of Auvergne at Clearmont Ferrand later that year. It's believed that Volpi owned the car on paper only adn that SEFAC Ferrari handled the race entries and driver assignments. Swedish racing driver Ulf Norinder owned the car from 1963 through 1971, racing the car at the Targa Florio, Monza, Daytona, Spa, Nurburgring, Reims and at a number of Swedish venues. The Alfa 6C-1750 followed the 6C-1600 and was produced in six series from 1929 to 1933. In total, 2579 chassis were completed and they became the quintessential model for both amateur and professional drivers. Available in several body styles, most cars were sold as a rolling chassis to be bodied by coachbuilders including Zagato, Touring, Castagna, Ghia, Farina, Pininfarina, Weymann and James Young. The definitive form of the 6C-1750 was the short chassis Supercharged Gran Sport and Super Sport versions of which approximately 360 cars were made.

In competition, the 6C-1750 was quite possibly the most successful car/chassis ever manufactured by Alfa Romeo. In addition to winning the 1929 Mille Miglia, twenty-five out of twenty-six supercharged 1750s completed the 1000 mile course. During the 1930 Mille Miglia, the 1750 would sweep the first four places in the race and would become known for an epic 6C-1750 duel between Nuvolari and Varzi. Nuvolari overtook Varzi in the pre-dawn with his 1750's headlights switched off and continued to win the race with a finishing time of 6 hours 18 minutes 59 seconds (averaging 62.78 mph) making the 6C-1750 the first car to ever complete the 1000 mile Mille Miglia Race averaging over 100 kph. The first Jowetts had flat, twin-cylinder engines, and this horizontally opposed layout would become a Jowett trademark. In 1936 a flat four engine was introduced.

The starting point in developing the 911 GT3 R weighing just 1,200 kg or 2,646 lb was the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup presented in September for one-make cup racing. Thanks to its increase in engine size by 0.2 litres, the GT3 R offers 30 bhp more than the Cup model. Both cars are based on the extra-wide body of the 911 GT3 RS street-legal sports car.
  • 1960 Ford Thunderbird 1960 Ford Thunderbird

Marketed as a spacious, luxurious boulevardier, the Thunderbird was introduced in 1955 in response to the Chevrolet Corvette, which had been launched two years earlier. A luxurious car in the day with optional power windows and removable hard top, the 1955 T-bird found 16,155 buyers compared to a mere 674 for the Corvette, which was almost discontinued due to poor sales. Available only through the 1957 model year, the two-seat Thunderbird was transformed into a four-seater for 1958 to improve marketability. Temporarily discontinued after 1998, the Thunderbird was reintroduced for 2001 as a two-place personal car that embodied the spirit of the well-remembered original version.
  • Aston Martin Le Mans Aston Martin Le Mans

  • DeTomaso Pantera DeTomaso Pantera

The Pantera was the result of an Argentinian racing driver (Alejandro De Tomaso), Italian engineering and American muscle. The styling was handled by Tom Tjarda while Giampaolo Dallara was responsible for the structural design. Looking at the vehicle, it greatly resembles that of the Lamborghini offspring. The reasoning for this resemblance could be attributed to Giampaolo Dallara who was also aided in the designing of the Lamborghini Miura.
  • Innocenti Spyder Innocenti Spyder

The Innocenti Spyder S was based on the Austin-Healey Sprite, as it used the same suspension, steering, drivetrain, and engine, but it had a unique body styled by Ghia. It also included some luxuries not seen in the Sprite, such as wind-up windows, larger doors, and external door handles. This car is a Spyder S, which was introduced in 1963 with a slightly larger engine versus the original cars. The engine came from the Mark II Sprite. The S was different cosmetically over the earlier Innocenti Spyders, with a new grille, badging, hubcaps, and interior.
  • March BMW 86G March BMW 86G

BMW of North America entered the IMSA GTP series in 1985 with a prototype car utilizing a 2.0-liter version of the 1983 World Championship winning BMW Formula 1 turbo engine. This prototype was the basis for the 1986 BMW March GTP car.

Using a new generation turbocharged 2.0-liter power plant, the cars were capable of more than 200 mph. The two-car team of David Hobbs/John Watson and Davy Jones/John Andretti always qualified well, but the program's only win came from Jones and Andretti at Watkins Glen in 1986. The duo won from the pole position and set a race record around the famous 3.7-mile upstate New York circuit. The story of these cars is not what they were, but what they could have been. After only two seasons and the historic win at the Glen, the cars saw only two more races as the very expensive program was discontinued by BMW.
  • Tatum Special Tatum Special

In 1952, Chuck Tatum attended a sports car race in his hometown of Stockton, California. That evening, in the bar at the local hotel, Chuck and some friends were discussing the fact that the front running cars at the races were all imported from England or Europe. Chuck declared that he could build a car, using American components, that would beat all that 'foreign stuff.'

That winter, in his shop behind his house, he proceeded to build such a car. He constructed a light but rigid frame to which he attached front suspension from a 1939 Ford, a rear axle from a 1946 Ford Pickup, and steering from a 1939 Ford. He used a Lincoln transmission and chose a 1951 GMC truck engine fitted with side draft carburetors from a 1953 Corvette. The aluminum bodywork was hand formed by his good friend, Jack Hagemann.

  • BMW X6 ActiveHybrid BMW X6 ActiveHybrid

The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is the world's first Sports Activity Coupé with full hybrid drive offering a driving experience quite unique both in the segment of BMW X models and in the hybrid segment as a whole. Through its combination of a V8 gasoline engine and electric drive, the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 offers a significant increase in dynamic performance together with a reduction of fuel consumption and emissions by approximately 20 per cent. This joint enhancement of driving pleasure and efficiency clearly proves that the BMW ActiveHybrid X6 is a typical BMW in the hybrid segment.

BMW ActiveHybrid technology offers the driver three significant options: to drive under electric power alone, to use the power of the combustion engine, or to benefit form the combination of both drive modes. Driving completely free of CO2 in the electric mode is possible up to a speed of 60 km/h or 37 mph. The combustion engine then cuts in as required (as a function of load conditions) and is automatically switched off when driving in overrun at a speed of less than 65 km/h or 40 mph.

  • Mopar Jeep Lower Forty Image Vehicle: An Extreme Trail Rig with 40-inch Tires Mopar Jeep Lower Forty Image Vehicle: An Extreme Trail Rig with 40-inch Tires

The Jeep 'Lower Forty' takes the Jeep Wrangler platform to a new extreme. The vehicle is equipped with massive 40-inch x 13.5-inch tires mounted on Mopar's 20-inch forged-aluminum wheels. Mopar added aggressive wheels and tires to a stock, two-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon without the use of a suspension lift. The team's goal was to achieve added ground clearance without dramatically altering the vehicle's center of gravity. The team removed copious amounts of body metal in order to provide room for 40-inch meats. Three inches are chopped from the windshield frame and a 10-degree rake is added.

Custom front and rear fender flares are 1-inch wider and are located 4 inches higher than a stock Jeep Wrangler. A new one-piece carbon-fiber hood with a Jeep CJ-like power dome and an all-new drop-down tailgate stamped with the 'Jeep' logo are added to complete the exterior design.

  • Abarth 850 TC Abarth 850 TC

The Fiat 600 was a very suitable car for modifications, and Abarth made a world-famous name on doing just that. Karl Abarth, born in Vienna, Austria, in 1908, was a mechanical mastermind. He started production with the Abarth 750 Berlina, based upon the Fiat 600. Fiat and Abarth reached an agreement whereby Fiat supplied Abarth with partially constructed cars, and Abarth would finish them as Abarths. There were versions with 41.5 to 50 horsepower, and maximum speed was 135 to 150 km/hr. Next, at the end of 1960, came the new version of the 750, the 750TC (Tourismo Competizione) Berlina. This car remained in production until 1966. Further modifications led to an increase in engine size and the Fiat Abarth 1000 Berlina was born. These platforms utterly dominated the under-1000cc racing classes and helped build the Abarth racing legend.

  • The Jay Leno Camaro The Jay Leno Camaro

Powered by a twin-turbocharged version of the 3.6L direct injected V-6 that is standard in Camaro LS and LT models, Leno's Camaro blends high performance with surprising efficiency in a racing-ready package. A pair of Turbonetics T-3 turbochargers blows through a custom air-to-air intercooler, force-feeding the engine about seven pounds of boost and lifting its horsepower level to about 425. That's about 40 percent greater than stock and in normal driving (when the turbochargers aren't making boost), there's virtually no penalty in fuel economy over the non-turbocharged 3.6L engine.

'Jay's Camaro offers style, performance and efficiency in a big way,' said Dewar. 'It delivers the power of a Camaro SS on demand, but with the fuel economy of a V-6.'

Supporting upgrades for the turbo system include a larger-capacity Be-Kool radiator and a custom exhaust system, as well as a Centerforce-supplied clutch and pressure plate for the six-speed manual transmission. The tubing for the turbo system is powder-coated blue. The powertrain was designed to deliver consistent, controllable power for both the street and race track. In fact, road racing was a primary mission for the car during its development.

  • The Rolls-Royce Phantom III The Rolls-Royce Phantom III

The Phantom III was the first Rolls-Royce to be fitted with a V12 engine, which was probably an inevitable development as the company was already manufacturing aero engines in this configuration.

V12 overhead valve engine had a one-piece aluminum alloy crankcase and cylinder blocks and cast-iron wet cylinder liners and aluminum head.
