  • Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 Valentino Balboni Edition Lamborghini Gallardo LP 550-2 Valentino Balboni Edition

He has long been revered as one of the many legends surrounding the world's most uncompromising sports car brand – Valentino Balboni, a remarkable test driver with his own personal cult status. Automobili Lamborghini now presents a model in his honour and bearing his name – the Gallardo LP 550-2 Valentino Balboni.

The latest version of the Gallardo, Lamborghini's most successful model of all time - overall, more than 9,000 units of the model range have already been produced - boasts not only its own distinctive design and exclusive equipment, but its technology is unique too, as indicated by the model badge: the 550 stands for the power output in hp and the 2 is for rear wheel drive.

For several decades, Valentino Balboni has had a distinct influence on the character of the super sports car bearing the sign of the bull. With his fine-tuning and testing work, he has helped to shape many automotive legends, from the Lamborghini Miura of the 60s through to the current Gallardo and Murciélago models. Balboni was hired in 1967 by company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini himself. From early on, it was evident that the young Balboni had a special feel for cars, that most sensitive of all instincts that connects to the ‘life blood' of an automobile and defines the soul of a test driver.

'A Lamborghini must always combine the precision of a race car with the reliability of a good friend,' says Balboni. Since 1973, he has sat at the wheel of every prototype built by the brand, and even most production cars have passed through his hands before being delivered to their customers. This has turned Balboni into one of the most important representatives of the brand, with an outstanding reputation and status among the brand's fans and customers worldwide.
  • Mercedes-Benz 500K Mercedes-Benz 500K

With six feet of hood separating the driver from the front of the Mercedes 500K, there had to be something important under all that elegantly styled sheet metal. In this case, it was a legend - and an enormous engine. The early thirties saw Daimler-Benz begin to design high-speed touring cars, with the 500K one of the proudest accomplishments. the eight-cylinder, 5-liter big-bore engine was supercharged with the 'K' standing for Kompressor, and engaging it rewarded drivers with a distinctive C-note from the 500K's whining blower. The steering was stiff at lower speeds, but one look at the body (there were nine options) made it clear that speed would never be a problem. The car has four-wheel independent suspension, and is capable of hitting over 100 mph in top gear. This car was rebodied from a 540K to a 500K Special Roadster in 2000, and the engine and chassis numbers are matching.

With a spyder body by Fantuzzi, number 2089 was a private entry in both the 1955 and 1956 Mille Miglia races, finishing 1st in Class (4th overall) and 2nd in Class (56th overall) respectively. Owned and driven by Francesco Giardini, it also competed at other venues in period, such as LeMans, Monza, and the Targa Florio. It is powered by a 2-liter twin cam 6-cylinder engine. In 1959 the car was rebuilt at the Maserati factory in a GT configuration with its present Pininfarina coupe body. It won the Art Center College of Design Award at Pebble Beach in 2005.
  • Maserati V4 Maserati V4

We came across this vehicle at the recent Le Belle Macchine d'Italia. It is a very important and significant automobile - it is a very early Maserati and one of the few cars ever created with a 16-cylinder engine.

The engine has two banks of eight-cylinders and a single crankcase. It displaces 4000ccc and produces around 280 horsepower. Wearing lightweight Zagato coachwork, the car ran the flying 10 kilometers at 246.6 kilometers per hour on September 28th of 1929.

Sadly, the weather at Le Belle Macchine d'Italia was not very cooperative so our photographs do not do full justice to this elegant and impressive vehicle, but we hope to see it again in the future.

It returned for the 24 Hours of Le Mans five more times – consecutively – up until 1973, a record that remains unbroken by any single chassis.

'We are delighted to have the opportunity to present this champion L88 Corvette at auction – it is surely one of the most successful international Corvette racing cars in history,' said Ian Kelleher, President and Chief Operating Officer of RM Auctions.
  • International Car Display at Greenwich International Car Display at Greenwich

International cars took center stage on day two of the 14th consecutive Greenwich Concours d'Elegance. Just like with day one (featuring American cars), day two was blessed with nice, warm weather. Over 150 vehicles were carefully arranged on the show field and offered a wide variety of sheet metal to impress the un-ending stream of onlookers throughout the day. From the large and stately pre-War cars from Renault, Alfa Romeo, and Lagonda to competition Porsche, Lola, and Ferrari models, the list of cars was as vast as it was diverse.
  • The Sabra The Sabra

The Sabra was born when Autocars, an Israeli firm, commissioned Reliant, a British car company to build them a sports car. The Sabra Sport was to be sold as a new entry in the growing US sports car market in the early 1960's. Total production is estimated at 208, with 55 sold in the UK under the name of Sabra, and 153 were exported to the US under the name of Sabra. The Sabra Sport was introduced at the 1961 New York Auto Show. The car came with either a re-moveable hardtop as seen here or a convertible top - not both.

The car was not accepted well in the US for several reasons. First it did not come equipped with several amenities such as sun visors, back-up lights and an interior dome light. The Sabra Sport was offered at $3,500 comparable to the Austin-Healey 3000, but its performance was more in line with MG Midget selling for only $2,000.

The Bonhams automotive auction in Carmel, California on August 14th, will offer the ex-Jacques Swaters, Ecurie Belgique 1948 Talbot-Lago T26C for sale without reserve, estimated to sell for $1m to $1.3m

The bespoke French race car, chasis number 11006, was delivered new to Georges Grignard who campaigned it for two years - even winning the 1950 Grand Prix de Paris - and then, after buying another Talbot-Lago, sold it to Roger Laurent, Jacques Swaters and Charles de Tornaco - three amateur Belgian drivers who dreamed of an all-Belgian racing team.

Laurent was a race veteran of 37 years while de Tornaco had been racing since the age of 20 and had several successes to his name, chiefly 3rdplace at the 1923 24 Hours of Le Mans and 3rd at the 1924 24 Hours of Spa. Together with Swaters and Andre Pilette, Ecurie Belgique was born with number 11006 as its weapon.
  • Anticipation Building for Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races Anticipation Building for Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races

There are two sides to every story, and in the case of the 36th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races that means it's hard to say who will enjoy themselves more: the owners and drivers of over 450 extraordinary entries or the more than 30,000 spectators who will flock to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on August 14-16 for the 2009 edition of vintage motorsport's number one spectacle. The finely-tuned tradition showcases the cars and people of motor racing history from the beginning of the sport to the present day and this year honors Porsche as its featured marque.

Helping to celebrate Porsche's storied racing heritage will be Porsche former factory drivers Brian Redman and Vic Elford. Redman drove Porsches to two of his three victories at the 24 Hours of Daytona (1970, '76, '81) and one of his two victories at 12 Hours of Sebring ('75, '78) as well as raced the famed Porsche 917 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. (The 917, iconic for its high speeds and power outputs, gave Porsche its first overall win at Le Mans in 1970.) Elford, who also drove Porsches to win Daytona (1968) and Sebring (1971), drove the 917 in the high-speed scenes for the 1971 Steve McQueen movie Le Mans.

The futuristic, Ghia-styled 1953 Fiat 8V Supersonic, one of only eight aluminum-bodied examples equipped with a 115-horsepower 2.0-liter overhead-valve 70-degree V8 Fiat engine, is among the exciting entries in the Sports Car class at the 30th anniversary Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance on August 2, 2009 in Rochester Michigan.

The 1953 Fiat 8V Supersonic, celebrated by the press at its 1953 Paris Motor Show debut, came to market later that same year for a handsome sum of $3,100. The limited-production Supersonic was purchased by Detroit manufacturers of the day interested in studying its spectacular design and engineering.
  • Le Belle Macchine d'Italia Le Belle Macchine d'Italia

Nestled back in rural Pennsylvania near the towering Poconos, Skytop Lodge rests atop a scenic hill surrounded by wilderness and quiet. The Lodge, with its regal stone architecture and great size, looks more like the grandiose mansion of a wealthy Englishman than a lodge for vacationing skiers. The property surrounding it is full of lovely yards overlooking a golf course and a peaceful lake. Little cabins pepper the area nearest the main building, where resting patrons may indulge in an uncluttered existence away from the hectic hustle of city living.

The Skytop Lodge would be the perfect venue for a flower show or a wedding reception, but for the last 23 years a group of Italian car aficionados have had another idea for the tranquil location. Le Belle Macchine d'Italia, a yearly gathering of Italy's finest automobiles, holds its concorso d'eleganza on the South Lawn at Skytop. Italian cars have a tendency to care little about being quiet or peaceful, placing a stronger emphasis on delivering striking performance and sinister looks. For this reason, Le Belle Macchine d'Italia introduces a different flavor to the reposeful land of Skytop.
  • Pruett, Rojas Win Second Straight Rolex Race at Mid-Ohio Pruett, Rojas Win Second Straight Rolex Race at Mid-Ohio

Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas needed five races into the 2009 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 to win their first race of the season. They didn't have to wait long to post victory number two, driving to victory in Saturday's EMCO Gears Classic presented by KeyBank at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

The defending Daytona Prototype champions dominated the latter half of Round 6, leading the final 35 laps in the No. 01 TELMEX Lexus Riley before Pruett held off Ricardo Zonta in a fight to the finish to win by .491 seconds.

'My hat's off to Ricardo Zonta,' Pruett said after scoring his 22nd Rolex Series victory, following up the team's triumph in the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen. 'We were both driving like it was qualifying. It was an unbelievable event. It was crazy, because we were trying to race as fast as we can, carving our way through traffic and trying not to hit anyone. It's a good thing we had a fast car that ran well all day long. But it was a real nail-biter at the end.'

The winners had to come from a lap down. Rojas was penalized for improper fueling following a pit stop on the first lap, and then had to pit after contact with another car.
  • The Lamborghini 670-4 SuperVeloce at Le Belle Macchine d'Italia The Lamborghini 670-4 SuperVeloce at Le Belle Macchine d'Italia

The newest Lamborghini supercar made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show a few months ago, in March. It was absent from the New York Auto Show, making its official U.S. unveiling in Las Vegas at a private event. Since then, two examples have been shown at events throughout the United States, and will continue to stir interest at various other future events.

The SuperVeloce is powered by a V12 engine pumping out 670 horsepower and 487 lb-ft. of torque. Along with its reduction in weight, the car is capable of 0-62 mph in just 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 212 mph.

At this years Le Belle Macchine d'Italia, the only two SV models in the United States were in attendance. Also in attendance were several significant and rare Maseratis, Lamborghini's, and Ferraris. Unfortunately, there was heavy rain throughout the day which kept many of the vehicles from receiving the proper admiration and attention that they deserved.

Only four of these Ferrari 330 LM Berlinettas were built, and this car (serial number 4725 SA) is the only one with a competition history having finished fifth overall at Le Mans in 1963. After Le Mans, this car saw any further significant competition use with a final appearance at Brands Hatch for the Guards Trophy where it finished eighth overall and first in class. It is also the only right hand drive example of its type. Its performance comes from a four-liter V-12 engine delivering almost 400 horsepower at 7000 RPM. It was at Monza in April 1963 that the Ferrari 330 LM Berlinetta made its debut; it was presented to the press along with Ferrari's 250 P sports prototype.

The 32nd Annual Ault Park Concours d'Elegance located in Cincinnati, Ohio selected the 1938 Horch 853A Erdmann & Rossi Sport Cabriolet as their favorite vehicle on the field. It is a car that has a history of winning awards including at Pebble Beach, Meadow Brook, and the Glenmore Gathering.

The Model 853 Special Roadster is the rarest of the straight-eight Horches, with only eight built in two series. The engine is a 4944cc OHV design producing 120 bhp at 3600 rpm, and is accompanied by a four-speed transmission with overdrive. Suspension is independent at all four corners, and the car is equipped with hydraulic brakes with servo assist. The roadster weighs in at 5,798 lb, and has a top speed of 84 mph. The 853 was referred to in Horch literature as being built on a 'short wheelbase,' but shortness is surely relative, since the wheelbase measures 135 inches. The 853s were bodied by Erdmann & Rossi, and each was slightly different.

The car is owned by Joseph & Margie Cassini who have had earned a number of Best of Show honors at recent concours events with their impressive collection of automobiles.

The 2009 1 Series Coupe combines unique, dynamic and unmistakable design elements with a powerful and muscular body. The greenhouse with its characteristic 'Hofmeister kink' is moved rearward and offers a particularly nimble look with its long hood. The short overhangs, long wheelbase and large frameless doors sit on a body with a striking shoulder line for a modern interpretation of BMW's characteristic look. On the 135i Coupe, an M Aerodynamic Kit is standard.

The 1 Series boasts aggressive rear end styling. The trunklid has an integrated spoiler chiselled into the rear end of the car to accentuate the short rear section. On the 135i, an additional lip spoiler provides greater downforce on the rear end at high speeds.
  • Gemballa Tornado 750 GTS Gemballa Tornado 750 GTS

There is only a little connection left between the GEMBALLA TORNADO 750 GTS and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo. At the most, the Porsche SUV is the master model for the latest development by the automobile manufacturer from Leonberg near Stuttgart. Already at first glance, the targeted goal of the technicians at GEMBALLA Automobiltechnik GmbH & Co. KG can be clearly defined: away from the SUV and more to an uncompromising sports car. The reason for the performed metamorphosis was the large amount of requests for a high performance sports car with the dimensions and the spacious interior of an SUV. 25 years of experience with innovative products based on Porsche sports cars contributed to the development of this new automobile. The unique signature of owner Uwe Gemballa is also clearly visible with the TORNADO 750 GTS: 750 hp and a vehicle weight reduced by 250 kg are only two unique selling points of this superb automobile. Once again, the company confirms its expertise when it comes to striking design and an especially powerful engine technology.

The Greenwich Concours d'Elegance is a two-day affair that showcases American cars on one day and International cars on the second day. Both days highlight a grand array of vintage, classic, sports, touring, competition and collectible automobiles from the turn of the century to the present. Many of the vehicles are one-of-a-kind, limited production, or were custom-built for affluent customers. The event is held at the Roger Sherman Baldwin Park, in Greenwich, CT and includes vintage motorcycles, and an in-the-water display of vintage boats.

Day one of the Greenwich Concours was both educational and entertaining. With around 150 cars on display, plus nearly 100 cars under the Bonhams Auction tent, it was a great start to this two day celebration.

The early 3 Litre car that ushered in the legend of Bentley at Le Mans will be among the many storied and stylish Bentleys showcased when the 59th annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance takes place on Sunday, Aug. 16. Event organizers also plan to unite the record-setting Bentley Speed Sixes, known more simply as Old Numbers One, Two and Three, and the iconic Birkin Blower race cars.

'It will be a thrill for me to see these Bentleys, many in British racing green, pull onto the green at Pebble Beach,' says Concours Chairman Sandra Button. 'Raw power will be paired with raw beauty. Interestingly, both Bentley and Pebble Beach had their beginnings in 1919 and they share a devotion to excellence.'

Four full classes of Bentleys will be spread along the 18th fairway of the famed Pebble Beach Golf Links® to mark the 90th anniversary of both the resort and the motor car company, which was begun by W.O. Bentley, whose stated philosophy was to 'make a fast car, a good car, the best in its class.' In addition to the racing class, there will be two classes of unique Vintage Bentleys, a class of Derby Bentleys, and several Bentleys in other classes.
  • Mazda Furai -- 'Sound of the wind' Mazda Furai -- 'Sound of the wind'

Furai takes Mazda's unique Nagare (Japanese for 'flow') design language a step further as it is translated into a concept car based on an American Le Mans Series (ALMS) racing car. The car utilizes the Courage C65 chassis the company campaigned in the ALMS series only two seasons ago, and the 450-hp three-rotor rotary engine that distinguishes it from anything else on the track.

Says Franz von Holzhausen, Mazda's North American director of design, 'Furai purposely blurs boundaries that have traditionally distinguished street cars from track cars. Historically, there has been a gap between single-purpose racecars and street-legal models -- commonly called supercars -- that emulate the real racers on the road. Furai bridges that gap like no car has ever done before.'

  • Greenwich Concours (Day 2) : Best of Show Greenwich Concours (Day 2) : Best of Show

The final day of the Greenwich Concours has come and gone and both days (American cars on Saturday with International Cars on Sunday) were blessed with great weather. The long list of international sports, touring, and competition cars that graced the lawn of the Roger Sherman Baldwin Park in Greenwich, CT provided plenty of entertainment to the constant flow of visitors to the event.

The judges selected the 1948 Delahaye M135 owned by Ed and Carroll Windfelder as their favorite car on the field. Only nine examples of this styling exist today. All the cars in this series had a similar unifying design, but each had certain characteristics which separated them from each other. Body 1035 is the only car to feature chromed bucket headlamps. It also features Lucite steering wheel and dash knobs, along with higher-profile rear fenders and chrome boomerang-like trim along the rear fenders.

This post-war Delahaye 135 Cabriolet continued the esthetic standard set in the 1930's by Figoni & Falaschi. Sweeping fenders and curved shapes abound, with wonderful interior woods and fabrics to compliment its 'French Vanilla' exterior.

  • Greenwich Concours (Day 1) : Best of Show Greenwich Concours (Day 1) : Best of Show

The first day of the Greenwich Concours d'Elegance had a grand display of American vintage, classic, and collectible automobiles from the turn of the century to the present. Day two (Sunday) is scheduled to display international sports, touring, and competition cars from the 1900s to the present.

With over 140 American cars on the show field, the judges were faced with a difficult task of picking their best-of-the-best. The list of potential contenders included V-16 Cadillacs, a V-16 Marmon, two Duesenbergs, and several significant Packards (among a plethora of other worthy contenders). As the day wore on, it was still unclear which car might win the coveted award. The two Duesenbergs stood out as strong candidates, but neither would be bestowed with the award. The winner was a 1933 Auburn 12-161A owned by Joseph and Margie Cassini, III. This is the second week in a row that Mr. Cassini has won 'Best of Show.' Last week, his Isotta-Fraschini was given the award at the Eastern Concours of the United States.

The colorful twelve-cylinder Auburn was certainly one of the more attractive cars on the field and well deserving of this coveted award.

1990 was the inaugural year for a modest automobile show, organized by a group of volunteers and Members of the Board of Directors of the Burn Prevention Foundation, and held on the grounds of the Penn State Berks Campus. Its purpose was to assemble automobiles and people while promoting a message of preventing serious burn injuries through education. After twenty years, the event continues, and so does it message. Over $3.2 million has been raised during that time with approximately $1.2 million going to support the charitable programs of the Burn Prevention Foundation.

After just six years, the concours had outgrown its location and moved to Lehigh University's Mountain Top Campus. Ten years later, in 2006, it moved again to its present location at Northampton Community College.

Over the years, the concours has evolved dramatically and reached national prominence among concours events and continues to lure top collectors and large crowds. With two decades worth of history, it is one of the oldest continuously celebrated concours events in the United States, and the oldest Concours on the east coast.

Bruce and Genia Wennerstrom, the founders and co-directors of the Greenwich Concours, note that Greenwich is unique, in that it is actually two concours, back-to-back. Saturday's Concours Americana is exclusively for American makes, some 150 cars and motorcycles, while Sunday's Concours International is exclusively for imported marques, again some 150 cars and motorcycles. The vehicles range from 1900 up to the present, with a special circle of 'Contemporary Supercars,' such as Ferrari F40, Ford GT40, Lamborghini Diablo and so forth.

The Fairfield County Concours d'Elegance will host the world's first display of an example of each Packard Concept Car ever built on September 13, 2009. New Jersey collector Ralph Marano has agreed to display his entire collection at this important classic car event at the Fairfield County Hunt Club in Westport, CT. The 'missing link', the last ever Packard Concept Car, the 1956 Packard Predictor is coming from the National Studebaker Museum in South Bend, Indiana.

While one or two of these concept cars were built in numbers of two or sometimes four, most of them exist only once. Marano has been collecting Packard Concept Cars for over 20 years and has displayed some of them on and off, winning concours awards where he showed them. 'This is going to be the first time ever that all of these cars will be seen together,' says Marano. 'They all had their purpose and they all had their time,' says Marano, 'so they never were seen publicly together in one spot.'

Last year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California was the setting for the very first public presentation of the new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport. The response was extremely positive and now production of this roadster – limited to 150 units – is to begin at Molsheim. At the same time, the media and customers are taking their first test drives.

The new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport confronted the marque renowned for impeccable automotive solutions, aesthetics and driving dynamics with a whole new set of challenges. In response to customer demand, significant modifications have been made to the vehicle's complex structure so as to enable open-top driving, thereby adding a new dimension to this high-performance sports car. Incorporating a host of new and innovative safety and equipment features, it is the world's fastest and most exciting roadster. It is immediately recognizable as a result of its slightly higher windscreen, stylized daytime running lights, and lightweight, transparent polycarbonate roof.
  • The Concours d'Elegance of the Eastern US : Best of Show The Concours d'Elegance of the Eastern US : Best of Show

On the 20th Anniversary of the Eastern Concours of the US, the judges roamed the field, examined the cars, and cast their ballots for Best of Show. Over half of the automobiles were former top trophy winners from the events 19 years. As the Master of Ceremonies announced the winner, much to the cheers of the audience, it was the 1927 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A which had won top honors. This was another outstanding accomplishment for the vehicle, which had won Best of Show at last years' Meadow Brook Concours.

This Tipo 8A was commissioned by Rudolf Valentino in the mid-1920s. Valentino had been a true car aficionado and his car of choice was the Isotta Fraschini built in his native homeland of Italy. At a cost of $25,000, Valentino hired American coachbuilders LeBaron and Fleetwood to design and built this unique roadster on the high performance 8A S chassis.

Seriously affected by the economic crisis of the 1930's and then by the disruptions of World War II, Isotta-Fraschini stopped making cars after the war. Only five of the last model, the Monterosa, were produced. The plants were converted to produce marine engines. Valentino died at age 31, two months before Fleetwood had finished the car. Upon its completion, the car was exhibited at the Isotta Motors Showroom in New York.
