Audi A5 DTM finishes debut on podiumIn front of an impressive crowd of 142,000 spectators (throughout the weekend) the DTM made a fast and furious start into its new era with a turbulent race at the Hockenheimring. The new Audi A5 DTM started from the pole position and finished in third place after 40 laps.
This marked a repetition of DTM history. In 1990, Hans-Joachim Stuck clinched third place in Audi's first DTM race in the V8 quattro at Zolder – at the end of the year he became champion. In 2004, Mattias Ekström took third place on the Audi A4 DTM's first run at Hockenheim as well. The Swede, too, captured the title in the end.
DTM at HockenheimGary Paffett (THOMAS SABO Mercedes AMG C-Coupé) won the 2012 DTM season opener at Hockenheim from sixth place on the grid with a 4.7- second lead on Jamie Green (Mercedes AMG C-Coupé). It was Paffett's 18th Victory in the DTM and his fourth at Hockenheim. It was the British driver's 26th podium in the 82nd DTM race of his career and his seventh in a DTM race at Hockenheim. With 18 wins and a winning rate of 22%, Paffett has achieved the greatest number of victories among those drivers currently contesting the DTM. Paffett and Green secured the 100th one-two victory for Mercedes-Benz in the DTM since 1988.

The AmphicarThe first mass-produced car intended for the road and water was the Amphicar. It was designed by German Hanns Trippel and manufactured by the Quandt Group in Germany exclusively for sale in the United States. Production began in 1961 and continued to 1965. Eventually some cars were sold in the United Kingdom and some were used by the Berlin police department.
The Amphicar uses a special two-part land-and-water transmission built by Hermes, makers of the Porsche transmission, that allows the wheels and propellers to be operated either independently or simultaneously. The 'land' transmission is a 4-speed manual with reverse, while the 'water' transmission is one speed forward and one reverse.

The Champion in Touring Car Racing : The BMW M3In August 1985, a rumour surfaced in motor magazine Auto-Deutschland which emanated from a new sports car. An A Group Car from BMW that was a thoroughbred racing car according to the rules but was also to be produced in a version licensed to drive on open roads for everyday use. Speculation about this dream car that could take to normal roads and was intended for the 'Most dynamic among BMW 3 Series drivers' was right on target. But the pundits missed the mark about the motor-sport car by a mile on one prediction: They were convinced that anyone who 'wants to be a key player in the A Team needs to be turbocharged under the bonnet'. Not true. The BMW M3 had a naturally aspirated engine. And it became the most successful touring car in the history of BMW.

Officine Alfieri Maserati: 1954 Formula One SeasonWere it not for the fragility of their cars during the 1953 season, Maserati likely would have earned much better results that the lone victory in the World Championship at the very last round. The A6SSG certainly had the power to match the Ferrari 500 F2, but it would just come onto the scene at the wrong time. But Maserati wasn't looking to 1953. It was looking to its own time; a time that would come the following season and would remain a presence throughout the rest of the decade.
During the late '40s, Maserati was one of the chassis to have. The 4CL and the 4CLT were certainly very competitive. But when the new Formula One World Championship came into being, the new World Championship would be dominated by Alfa Romeo and Ferrari. Maserati would appear to be nothing more than an also-ran. The red Italian machines from Modena certainly challenged the might of Scuderia Ferrari and Alberto Ascari, especially during the 1953 season, but still, Maserati would be dominated just like everyone else. But heading into 1954, Maserati looked to turn the tables.

Bahrain GP - No oasis for Ferrari in the desertThe first four races of the season have come in a whirlwind like the one that can blow sand across Bahrain's Sakhir circuit and today in the desert there was no oasis with a tree to shade the shortcomings of the F2012, nor a well from which to draw up buckets of performance. Fernando Alonso had expected to be somewhere between seventh and twelfth, so ninth is pretty much right in the middle.

The Porsche 904The Porsche 904 GTS was Porsche's first foray into fiberglass construction of a production sports car. The 904 was really a dual purpose car that could be raced on weekends and driven on public roads, as this one was. The body is FPR bonded to square tube frame and is a mid-engine configuration. Depending on who was doing the fiberglass lay-up, the cars weighed approximately 1700 pounds and had a top speed of 163 MPH. The one hundred or so 904s were built with the 2-liter, four-cam, four-cylinder engines putting out 180 HP with the street configuration and 198 (DIN) HP in the racing configuration. Several were built with six-cylinder engines and at least one with an eight-cylinder engine.

1937 Lincoln Model KBy 1937, open cars, such as this seven-passenger touring car, were being built in very small numbers. The public's taste had definitely switched to closed cars. And, a declining number of luxury automobiles were being sold as the depression deepened in the United States.

Echidna Racing SpecialThe Echidna specials were designed and built in Hibbing, Minnesota as a team of three cars by John Staver, Ed Grierson and Bill Larson. The #64 was completed in 1958 and was raced that year by John Staver as a C Modified, powered by a 283 cubic-inch (4660cc) Chevrolet V8 engine. In 1959, the #64 Echidna's engine was replaced with a bored and stroked 339 cubic-cinch Chevrolet V8, and the car was raced as a B Modified. The two remaining Echidnas were completed in 1959 and raced that season as C Modifieds. In their first three seasons of racing, the Echidna team started 35 races and collected 25 first-in-class victories, eight of which were overall wins.
Ferrari 250 TR34 Testa Rossas were built from 1956 through 1961. Three time winner of the Le Mans 24 Hours Race - 1958, 1960, and 1961 - the Testa Rossa, or red head, was Ferrari's go-to-work sports racing car. Somewhat conventional mechanically it shook the world when shown with its pontoon fender bodywork, a Scaglietti invention, which was stunning aesthetically.
Jorge Daponte: 1954 Formula One SeasonAmong the few great names throughout Formula One's history there would be the many that would make their appearance, and then, disappear just about as fast as they came in. Jorge Daponte's role in the Formula One narrative would include just two scenes, one of those faces that appeared for a moment and then was gone.
Daponte's place in Formula One history actually begins in 1953 when Formula 2 regulations were used for the World Championship. But while names like Fangio, Ascari, Farina and others would be over in Europe taking part in the World Championship there, Daponte would first try and get his name listed in the World Championship history books by attempting to take part in the other race that counted toward it.
Maserati 300 SSide-by-side with the Formula One effort, the Maserati Factory competed in the international sports car championship with the 300S. This model, one of 27 known examples built from 1955-1958, shared the same engine, driveline and running gear as the 250F Grand Prix car. Considered to be a much better handling car than its Ferrari Competitors of the day the 300S was a coveted ride for the best drivers who won races all over Europe.
Monsterati SpecialThe first Monsterati was constructed from a very tight budget by Bill Janowski who was attending SMU at the time, pursuing a degree in engineering. Being just a freshman in college, he lacked the means to construct a serious racing machine; instead he focused on building a 'special'. Near the close of 1953, he purchased a 1939 Ford chassis and began work on the project which would take several years to complete. work was done during his spare time and he was given assistance by Bob Gast. Once completed, the car was clothed in an fiberglass and aluminum body shell that was attractive, but not very aerodynamic. The car was completed mid-1956 and brought to its first race the following. Power came from a Mercury flathead engine, which would later be switched in favor of a Chevrolet V8 unit.
The 1936 Ford AerocoupeThe 'Aerocoupe' is a highly modified 1936 Ford inspired by air-craft of the 1930s. The overall profile was altered by moving the cab back in relation to the wheelbase, which means less trunk and more hood. It rides on a Moal chassis with fully independent torsion bar suspension that sues a DeDion design in the rear with inboard Buick drums.

Lola T70 MKIIBritish race car builder Eric Broadley was one of the first to combine light weight mid-engine chassis with American V-8 power, in the Lola GT that ran at Le Mans in 1963. In 1965 he introduced the T70, which for two years was the world's fastest racing car.
Developed by World champion driver John Surtees, with 500 HP and weighing 1750 pounds, it had blinding acceleration, 0 to 100 mph in less than six seconds with stable, predictable handling.
McLaren Elva M1ACooper Cars considered building two special cars specifically for Bruce McLaren to compete in the 1964 Tasman series. After Cooper decided it was too costly and too much work, Bruce and Mayer brothers, Timmy the driver and Teddy the manager, established Bruce McLaren Racing Ltd to build the cars and race them. The cars created in his shop were a tremendous success, earning him his first victory in the New Zealand Grand Prix and the series championship.

Chinese GP - Without speed and traction you don't go farOnly two points to its name for Scuderia Ferrari come the end of the Chinese Grand Prix, brought home by Fernando Alonso, who finished the race in ninth place, while Felipe Massa was classified thirteenth. It is without a doubt a disappointing result, which came at the end of a race where the two drivers were practically always in traffic. After the third Grand Prix of the season, Fernando finds himself third in the Drivers' classification, eight points off the leader, while Felipe is still on a blank score sheet. The Scuderia remains third in the Constructors' championship.

A Fresh Take On French-Style LuxuryFollowing on from DS3, DS4 and DS5, Citroën Numéro 9 Concept takes a fresh look at the DS line wîth a new take on the prestigious shooting brake design.
Subtly combining the proportions of a coupé wîth those of an estate, Citroën Numéro 9 hints at exceptional driving sensations, wîth its taut lines, long bonnet and ultra-low stance (1.27m tall) on 21-inch wheels. It also promises unique onboard comfort wîth its generous proportions (4.93m long and 1.94m wide, wîth a 3m wheelbase) providing plenty of room for rear occupants. The three glass areas in the roof also create a welcoming, friendly cabin ambience.
Chinese GP - Different day, same result, but plenty of surprisesThe current world championship leader will start tomorrow's third round of the World Championship from ninth place on the grid and his team-mate is twelfth. Under normal F1 circumstances, that would seem an unusual scenario, but it's not, given that the current leader is Fernando Alonso in the F2012 that Scuderia Ferrari knows is not yet competitive enough when compared to its usual rivals. His team-mate, Felipe Massa missed the cut into Q3 by around two tenths of a second, getting closer in terms of lap time to Fernando than in the first two rounds of this year's series. Proving that this season is throwing up plenty of unusual scenarios is the fact that the Brazilian Ferrari man starts on the sixth row on the outside of reigning champion, Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull. So it's been a case of different day, same result, as the Ferrari grid positions are identical to those at the Sepang circuit three weeks ago.
Chinese Grand Prix: QualifyingThe MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS team locked out the front row of the grid for the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit today with Nico Rosberg putting the F1 W03 on pole position, and Michael Schumacher qualifying in third place, although he will start the race from second position.

Bob Gerard: 1954 Formula One SeasonGarage owner known as Mr. Bob, Bob Gerard had become well known for his impeccable car preparation during the years following the end of the Second World War. Driving ERAs, Gerard would often earn results far better than what the cars seemed capable. And in 1954, Gerard would use that same meticulous attention to detail and his dogged driving approach to earn more results far beyond what many considered possible.
After successfully campaigning ERAs right up through the very early 1950s, Gerard would be missing from the upper levels of grand prix racing during the 1952 season. However, he would fill his time racing in Formula 3 at the wheel of a Cooper ‘500'. He felt this move would be important as it most directly related to his garage business.

Vanderbilt Cup Centennial at the Miller Meet, July 6-7, 2012In recognition of the International Vanderbilt Cup and Grand Prize Races which were held here in Milwaukee in 1912, Vanderbilt Cup and Grand Prize race cars will be featured at the Millers at Milwaukee Meet July 6-7, 2012. Vanderbilt Cup era cars are invited to participate in the vintage Indy Car event.
The history of the famous Vanderbilt Cup races begins on Long Island in 1904 as the 'brainchild' of its major sponsor, William K. Vanderbilt, Jr., who was an early automobile enthusiast and successful race driver. The Vanderbilt Cup races, under the sanction of the Automobile Association of America (AAA), the name of which was later changed to American Automobile Association, were run on rural roads and city streets in Nassau county, New York, through 1910. Meanwhile, a rival organization, the Automobile Club of America (ACA), which feuded with the AAA, became the U.S. representative of the Automobile Club de France, which sanctioned the grand Prix races. As an aside, the AAA was mainly an automobile manufacturer's association, whereas the ACA was organized by car enthusiasts, particularly racing enthusiasts.

1952 Belgian Grand Prix: Youth Reigned DownOn a rain-soaked Spa-Francorchamps Circuit a tall, blonde-haired Brit by the name of Mike Hawthorn would stun the crowd and would make many within grand prix racing take notice of the 23 year old.
Mike Hawthorn had started out racing motorbikes. In his first-ever event in a BSA trial bike, Hawthorn would take the victory. Michael's father, Leslie, recognized his son's skills as a racer and would invest in his talent by using his Tourist Trophy garage to help prepare racing cars for his son.
1957 Jaguar 3.4-Liter MK1 Saloon ‘VDU 881'In 1922, Sir William Lyons and William Walmsley would found the Swallow Sidecar Company. Lyons would switch from sidecars to developing passenger cars. However, World War II would present a problem, but along lines not necessarily considered. It would be clear at war's end that Lyons would have to change the company's name considering the bad connation the 'SS' initials would foster. This unfortunate connection with the Third Reich would give rise to Jaguar.
Times would be tough for the company in the years after World War II. However, the company would make itself well known by producing a number of small sports cars. Models, such as the XK120, would be quite popular and successful on the race track.
1958 Moroccan Grand Prix: British All the WayAfter years of frustration, and well past his life-expectancy, Mike Hawthorn would be on the verge of his first World Championship. This was more than likely Hawthorn's last and best hope at a World Championship title. Just one last race, and a fellow Brit, would separate Hawthorn from his World Championship.

Concours d'Elegance 2011 Best of Show-European wins Louis Vuitton ClassicThe Concours d'Elegance of America is honored to have its 2011 'Best of Show' Award-winning 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K owned by Arturo and Deborah Keller chosen as the recipient of the prestigious Louis Vuitton Classic Award.

McLaren MP4/3The McLaren MP4/3 would find itself sandwiched between two incredible McLaren chassis, notable bookends in Formula One history. However, the MP4/3 would have one important, and often overlooked, distinction.
From the very first moments of taking over ownership of McLaren, Ron Dennis would be noted for employing only experts. Therefore, when it was more than apparent the normally-aspirated Cosworth DFV engines no longer offered the necessary power to battle with the latest of the turbocharged engines, Dennis would look to only one source for his power needs.
Mike Hawthorn & the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans: The Cause and the EffectAmidst the darkest day in motor racing history, a day that would forever change just about everything in the motor racing world and beyond, Mike Hawthorn, until his World Championship in 1958, would experience his greatest achievement in motor racing. But while it should have been a moment of great acclaim for the young British driver, there would be more than a few that would be placing the crosshairs of blame and culpability squarely on his forehead.
The 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans had been greatly touted. It had all the makings of a truly titanic battle between two nations. While Porsche, Ferrari, Maserati and other manufacturers were to be involved, everyone looked forward to the battle between England and Germany, between Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz. It was like the First and Second World Wars all over again. The British and the Germans would be set the fight and the French countryside would provide the setting.
Mike Hawthorn: A True Yorkshire Terrier10 April 1929 – 22 January 1959
In the early morning hours of January 22nd, 1959, with the wind howling, Mike Hawthorn would finally come up against a challenger that would end up being more than his equal. And in those early morning hours along the A3 near Guildford, the British people would lose its first-ever World Champion.
Born in Mexborough, Yorkshire in 1929, John Michael Hawthorn would certainly have a lot in common with the small breed of dog. Some would say he was arrogant. He would also be very independent and rather difficult. But he would also do and say a lot of things that would make him no stranger to controversy.
Porsche 911 GT2The most successful Gran Turismo car does not merely exist in history but continues to circulate in sportscar races the world over. And while there have been many evolutions of the Porsche 911 and there are many older versions still to be found throughout the world, the model's racing lineage is such that each one has its own, and likely successful, racing history story to tell. And the one offered at the 2012 Gooding and Company Amelia Island auction would be no exception.

Porsche 917/30 Can-AM SpyderPerfection in a race car is something that is greatly sought by each and every designer. But rarely does one find the 'perfect race car'. However, in 1973 Roger Penske provided Mark Donohue exactly that. As far as Donohue was concerned, the Porsche 917/30 Can-Am Spyder was the perfect blend of power and handling, performance and agility. But it would also be considered the car that killed the Can-Am series all together.
The lineage of the Porsche 917 stretches all the way back to prior 1970. The design would go on to great success and fame in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and other sportscar endurance races. However, after 1971, the coupe 917 would no longer be allowed to race in the World Championship. It was obvious there was still a lot of life in the Porsche's legs but it needed to find a place it could really run. And while the car that had been a part of the Group 7 category for a number of years would be able to take part in the European Interserie it would be in North America where it really could run the most wild and free.
