1955 Formula One Season: Scuderia Arzani-VolpiniThere is a saying 'out with the old and in with the new', but what if the old could be turned into something new? This experiment would make its presence known during the 1955 Formula One season and would be forever known as Scuderia Arzani-Volpini.
The beginnings of Scuderia Arzani-Volpini actually start, not at the beginnings of the 1955 Formula One season, but back before the Formula 2 era in the World Championship. The first couple of years of the new Formula One World Championship would be dominated by the aged man of war the Alfa Romeo 158/159 Alfetta. Originally designed before the Second World War, the car would survive the war and would literally have no equal in those immediate post-war years. However, there were other manufacturers trying to develop their own single-seater grand prix cars capable of taking the fight to the Alfas. One of the most prominent challengers throughout the late-1940s would be the Maserati 4CL and 4CLT chassis.
1966 24 Hours of Le Mans: Bewildered BruceThe look on Bruce McLaren's face as he climbed from his GT40 would be one of stark contrast to the rest of those with the Ford team. It was clear who the winner was, and yet, confusing as well. In the midst of one of the most demonstrative and authoritative victories in Le Mans history, McLaren and his co-driver Chris Amon would find themselves the beneficiaries of a saga that upset the team management at Ford as much as Ferrari's presence.
It was an all-out effort. Tremendous amounts of capital would be thrown into Ford's racing program. In 1963, a deal was on the table and all parties involved had come to an agreement. The production cars would be known as Ford-Ferraris while the racing side of Ferrari's efforts would be known as Ferrari-Fords.
1967 Can-Am Road America: The Beginning of the 'Bruce and Denny Show'While Formula One will be forever considered the pinnacle of motorsport, from a period between 1966 and 1986 there existed a series that would likely be the closest to 'anything goes' as any motor racing series could truly get. Based upon the FIA Group 7 cars but allowed to showcase unlimited engine sizes and unfettered aerodynamics, the Can-Am cars would have to be considered the pinnacle of motorsport technology and power of their era. And for more than a couple of years there would be one team that would utterly dominate the proceedings so much so that the whole of the series would simply become known as 'The Bruce and Denny Show'. And, at Road America in 1967, the show would air for the first time.

McLaren M8DAt a moment when the distraught Bruce McLaren Company needed hope for the future, a reason to carry on, the company would find that its hope for moving forward would turn out to come in the form in the form of the very car that had taken the life of the company's founder.
On a late Tuesday morning in early June, Bruce McLaren would climb inside of his newest Can-Am racer. Nicknamed the 'Batmobile', McLaren would strap himself inside of the new car and would set off around the 2.39 mile Goodwood circuit beginning early shakedown tests of the car.
All would be going well throughout the first hour and a half. He had been testing the new car getting more and more comfortable inside of it. His pace continued to creep up and up until he was seen powering his way down the main straight at speeds of around 170 mph. All of a sudden, the rear bodywork would lift up off the car causing there to be a lack of downforce at the rear of the car. At that point, the car would turn sideways and would slide off the circuit at a high rate of speed.
Paul Planette Coachcraft Mercury RoadsterThis car is the first vehicle custom built by Coachcraft. Commissioned by Hollywood socialite Paul Planette, the car was built in late 1939 and early 1940. Planette was a ladies' man and active 'player' on the Hollywood social scene. In a time when actors such as Clark Gable had special cars built to their own specifications, Planette followed suit by commissioning Coachcraft, the craftsman behind many of the Packard-Darrin vehicles, to build this custom Mercury-powered roadster.

Maserati MistralMaserati commissioned Pietro Frua to design a sleek two-seat hatchback coupe as a successor to the legendary 3500GT. This was the first of the 'wind Maseratis' and the last of the straight sixes. The Mistral was first shown to the press at the Salone dell'automobile di Torin in November of 1963. It was powered by a 3485cc unit from the 3500GT, with the Lucas fuel injection and ZF five-speed. The suspension was similar o the 3500GT and rode on an eight-inch shorter wheelbase. A short time later, a two-seat Spyder version became available and the engine was enlarged to 3,694 and finally 4,014cc.
Total production through 1970 comprised 830 coupes and 120 spyders.

Lighter, Faster, More Agile: the New 2013 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Carrera 4SThe new Porsche 911 Carrera 4 unites the performance and efficiency of the new, seventh-generation of the 911 Carrera wîth the dynamic benefits of the latest version of the active all-wheel-drive system PTM (Porsche Traction Management). The typical Porsche all-wheel-drive system wîth focused rear bias in this latest 911 version promises maximum vehicle dynamics on a wide variety of road surfaces and in all weather conditions. The new 911 Carrera 4 models deliver traction and dynamic performance to the fourth power.
The new all-wheel-drive 911 is being launched in four versions – the 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Carrera 4S, each as Coupé and Cabriolet. They sport the same traits as the rear-wheel drive versions: their lightweight body design, suspension, engines and gearboxes are identical, the only exception being modifications related to the all-wheel-drive. This means that despite a higher level of engine and driving performance, all four models consume significantly less fuel than the previous models; total savings for individual versions are as much as 16 per cent. In addition, the new 911 Carrera 4 is up to 143 lbs. (65 kg) lighter in weight when compared to the previous generation 911 Carrera C4.
1959 United States Grand Prix: Many FirstsThe very moment that the New Zealand International Grand Prix Association crowned its own Bruce McLaren its first 'Driver to Europe' scholarship winner everyone noted that it would just be a matter of time before McLaren made his debut in Formula One. And when he made that debut in Formula One at the German Grand Prix in 1958, everyone would come away with a sense that it wouldn't be long before the talented Kiwi earned his first World Championship victory. Most believed it wouldn't be too long. Whether or not they believed it would come the following year or not would be something else entirely.
McLaren had dealt with a serious and debilitating disease when just a young boy. It would cause him to be confined to a bed for a period of about two years. However, during that time McLaren would not be defeated by the disease. In fact, it would be during this time that he would develop his strong fortitude and drive to succeed. It would also be a time in his life that he would develop his wonderful sense of life and such an engaging personality, all aspects that would come to serve his racing career and racing enterprises well in the future.
1962 Monaco Grand Prix: McLaren Carries the Cooper Flag back to the TopBy the beginning of the 1962 Formula One season Jack Brabham had left Cooper to form his own racing team. It seemed the glories days of the double World Championship were well and truly behind them. However, left in Brabham's stead would be a man very akin to the Australian in so many ways. And in Bruce McLaren, Cooper had a driver and competitor more than apt to help carry the team forward into the future.
The first race of the 1962 season, the Grand Prix of the Netherlands, certainly didn't give much of an indication that Cooper was ready to reassume its place at the top. Bruce McLaren would find himself on a team that would boast of Tony Maggs and Jackie Lewis as his two teammates in the first race of the season.
1968 Belgian Grand Prix: A First for McLarenMcLaren and Formula One are truly synonymous. Over the course of its history, McLaren has completed 714 races and have garnered no less than 178 victories. But while McLaren and victory in Formula One are an almost certainty, the very first would be anything but a complete surprise.
In December of 1959, Jack Brabham would be leading the way in his Cooper T51 with Bruce McLaren following along not all that far behind. The final lap of the United States Grand Prix held at Sebring, Florida has just gotten underway and it seemed as though Brabham would cruise to victory and to the World Championship title.
1968-1969 McLaren M7AIn 1966, at the famed Monaco Grand Prix the windows of the expensive downtown hotels and shops would be rattled an incredible cacophonous sound. Adorned in white with a small green stripe, Bruce McLaren's first effort in Formula One was certainly more sound than fury. However, when the team made the move to the more glaring bright orange, the team would trade in raucous noise for outright performance until it wouldn't be the sound but a flash of orange brilliance that would capture the attention of people around Formula One circuits the world over.
That first effort at the Monaco Grand Prix in 1966 would be anything but a little embarrassing. The sound from its adapted Ford engine would be enough to split eardrums as the incredible sound echoed off the buildings of the tiny principality. However, even all of the noise from the engine could do little to straighten-out the car's teething problems and poor speed. In fact, Bruce himself would recognize that the only success the car seemed capable of achieving was by being the noisiest car circulating the Monaco circuit.
Cooper T60Rounding the left-hander at Tabac for the final time and powering toward the line, Bruce McLaren held onto the slimmest of margins over Phil Hill in his Ferrari. Powering down the straight along the harbor, McLaren would manage to hold on to provide Cooper its first victory in more than a year. It had seemed like a long drought after the highly successful championship years of 1959 and 1960. But thanks to Bruce McLaren, the men at Cooper and to a new car, Cooper would make its way back to the top at Formula One's crown jewel race.
Jack Brabham's effort to push his T51 across the line at Sebring after running out of fuel ensured that he would take the Drivers' World Championship title. Bruce McLaren's victory in the same race helped ensure that Cooper would take the manufacturer's title. The Cooper T51 would be the first since the days of the Silver Arrows to introduce mid-engined race cars to the elite levels of grand prix racing. And though it was not the first rear-engined grand prix car, the T51 would be so revolutionary to Formula One at the time that its effects would still be felt in all of racing even to this very day.
HW Motors: 1954 Formula One SeasonThe world of Formula One is a constantly changing, evolving affair. One part of a season one team can dominate and then be dominated throughout the later-half. This would seem to be the case of HW Motors after the Formula 2 era of 1952 and 1953. However, by 1954, HW Motors wouldn't just suffer from being out-developed by the other manufacturers. In every respect, by 1954, HW Motors would be flat left behind.
By the late-1940s, HW Motors was one of Britain's leading motor racing manufacturers. Starting out in sportscars, the Alta-powered sportscar would take victory in the Manx Cup in 1949 and 2nd at the Grand Prix de l'ACF held at Comminges that same year.
In Formula 2, HWM would be a prominent player, and would remain so when the governing-body made the decision to switch from Formula One to Formula 2 regulations for 1952 and 1953.
Onofre Marimon: 1954 Formula One SeasonOnofre Marimon seemed to have all of the necessary elements to be truly successful in Formula One. Mentored by Juan Manuel Fangio and close to all of the other Argentineans in the paddock, this easy-going Latin was a rising star heading into 1954. As a result of obvious talents and successes on the track, Marimon would have the means to field his own team. But like Marimon himself, his team's presence in Formula One would be short-lived.
The coming of the 1954 season presented opportunities and pitfalls. The return of Formula One and its regulations allowing a maximum engine displacement of 2.5-liters meant a new line of grand prix cars would be rolling out of factories like Ferrari, Maserati and, soon, Mercedes-Benz. Given that the 2.5-liter displacement was the maximum there would also be a whole series of underpowered Formula 2 cars that would be still eligible to race, and in the right conditions, could still be competitive.

Bruce McLaren: Hidden Fears, but Absolutely no HandicapsThere would be moments, usually when tired or unaware of anyone looking, that Bruce McLaren would walk with an obvious limp to his step. To the casual onlooker the immediate thought would be 'results of an accident'. This would be far from the truth. The truth of the matter is that there were many aspects to Bruce McLaren that he would manage to hide from the general public, even family members. But one thing that is certainly truth, and that is this: in spite of the limp, he certainly did not stumble into greatness in motor racing.
Great trials and adversity have the ability to produce one of two outcomes: either they will destroy, or they will inspire and motivate. In the case of McLaren, the later would certainly be the case.
When Bruce McLaren lost his life while testing one of his Can-Am cars at Goodwood in 1970, the motor sports world would lose an incredibly humble and likable ambassador. Always ready to flash that famous smile and very approachable, Bruce McLaren was much more than a world-class driver. Astute and a perfectionist, Bruce McLaren also had an incredible ability to shut it all off and relax with those whose company he was keeping.

The duo completed 97 laps of the 4.048-mile circuit in the four-hour contest. Auberlen, who took the program's very first win here with Joey Hand in 2009, started the race from the fourth position. He drove the opening 21 laps before handing off to Müller just before the race's first full-course caution period. Müller cycled to the front as the balance of the field pitted and then drove 30 laps before pitting from the fifth spot to hand the No. 55 machine back to Auberlen.

Massa On Track At InterlagosThere are less than two weeks to go until the Formula 1 World Championship gets back on track, but Felipe Massa could not resist the temptation of getting back behind the wheel, especially as it was on his beloved Interlagos circuit. The opportunity arose with the fourth round of the Copa Fiat, the name given this year to what was known as the Trofeo Linea. The Scuderia driver was quickest in both free practice sessions held today and he was able to assess the updates introduced on the cars, especially on the engine front, the suspension and aerodynamics. 'A great job has been done and the car is much improved, more stable and easier to drive,' said Felipe. 'These characteristics are a great help to drivers who, like me, come from single-seaters.

Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance : Best of ShowAt the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, a 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Saoutchik Torpedo owned by Paul & Judy Andrews was named Best of Show. The low windshield example is powered by a supercharged 6.8-liter engine and is both a sports car and a luxury touring car. It was shown at the New York Auto Show in 1928 before being purchased by its first owner, Frederick Henry Bedford. In the early 1950s, it was put into storage where it remained for three decades. Since that time it has been treated to a restoration.
'This car really has everything,' said Concours Chairman Sandra Button. 'It has fantastic German engineering, elegant French styling, and a wonderful restoration by Paul Russell. It's a car you can imagine racing as well as touring. It's just a marvelous embodiment of everything that is Mercedes-Benz.'
Other nominees for Best of Show included a 1935 Duesenberg J Gurney-Nutting Speedster owned by the William Lyon Family of Newport Beach, California; a 1931 Duesenberg J Derham Tourster owned by Joseph and Margie Cassini III, of West Orange, New Jersey; and a 1933 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Figoni Coupé owned by David and Adele Cohen of West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K von Krieger Special RoadsterLife is full of tragedy and comedy and 'all the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players' (Shakespeare 2.7). Rarely can the fullness of life, with all of the emotions and intricacies, become captured in an inanimate, unfeeling object. However, there are those special moments when true pieces of art are created. And though they may be, in and of themselves unfeeling and cold, they have the ability to take on the identity of their creator or possessor and become alive, a silent story-teller. One such piece of art that narrates a story full of nobility and destitution, of love and loss, would make its way to auction at the 2012 Gooding and Company event held in Monterey, California.
While the Gooding and Company auction in Monterey is all about exquisite automobiles with incredible pedigrees, to fully understand and appreciate the 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540K offered one needs to know and understand the story of the players in the drama for which the car would be custom made and delivered.
The 12C Can-Am Edition is finished in striking shade of McLaren Orange, in tribute to cars of Bruce McLaren and Denny Hulme which were extremely successful throughout the 1960s and 1970s. The McLaren badges on the front and rear are also finished in carbon fibre. Beneath the surface, the 12C Can-Am Edition shares the same carbon fibre MonoCell chassis as the 12C road car.

Ford C-MAX Hybrid Earns 47 City, 47 Highway, 47 CombinedFord Motor Company once again raises the hybrid fuel-economy bar with the all-new Ford C-MAX Hybrid, which is now officially EPA-certified at 47 mpg city, 47 mpg highway and 47 mpg combined – beating Toyota Prius v by up to 7 mpg.
The certification is significant because it makes C-MAX Hybrid the first hybrid vehicle to offer 47 mpg across the board. Also, hybrids traditionally have been more economical in city driving than on the highway, unlike conventional vehicles.
C-MAX Hybrid, however, returns the same fuel economy whether driving cross-country or across the city – stemming mostly from a growing list of Ford innovations that have helped the vehicle to deliver an impressive list of metrics, such as a top speed of up to 62 mph in EV mode.

1938 Horch 853A Special RoadsterThis elegant automoible is headed to RM Auctions Monterey sale with an estimated value of $6,000,000-$8,000,000. It is a Pebble Beach Best of Show winner, with multiple other Best of Show wins to its credit.
Meaning to 'hear' or 'listen', August Horch's line of automobiles certainly something more to behold than just to hear, for it would be what the eyes would see that whole could be truly appreciated. And perhaps none of the Horch models could be more appreciated for their beauty and elegance than the model 853.
In 1896, August Horch would see his first automobile, which would be a Benz. In a matter of months, Horch would be working for Benz and would ultimately be a plant manager. By 1899, Horch would manage to find enough financial backing to start his own automobile manufacturing company. And, just before the turn of the century, he would found Horch and Co.
1967 Ford GT40 Mark IChassis number P/1059 is headed to RM Auctions Monterey Sale, with its original, matching drivetrain, is estimated to draw between $2,300,000 and $2,700,000.
1963, Ford was pushing hard to acquire Ferrari. However, when the deal failed to materialize a new kind of resolve overcame the Ford management and its racing department. The new attitude could be easily explained: 'If you can't buy them, then beat them.' Thankfully, for all car enthusiasts, the deal did fail to materialize, for out of that bitterness would be born the GT40.
Ford wanted domination and that would come during the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans when it scored a fabulous and memorable one-two-three victory with the GT40. This success on the track meant even more than retribution. The old adage held true: 'Win on Sunday, sell cars on Monday.'

The 1958 PackardThe 1958 catalog of Packards came with no model names. Each one was just a 'Packard.' And they were no longer built in Detroit. The end of Packard was in sight as Studebaker had taken over and many observers dubbed the Packardbakers. Not that there was anything wrong with Studebaker, it's just that it wasn't Packard. Sadly, the 1958 models did not sell well.
The 1958 Station Wagon 'combined station wagon capacity with limousine luxury and riding ease,' claimed Packard. In actuality, this Studebaker-based Packard was smaller and lighter than a standard Ford or Chevrolet, with a 116-inch wheelbase and 206-inch overall length. Standard equipment included a 225 horsepower 289 cubic-inch V8 engine, 'Flight-o-Matic' automatic transmission and power brakes.
Just 159 examples of the Station Wagon were produced.

Five examples of the Shadow DN4 were built for 1974, only 2 of which were used in competition: DN4-1 by Oliver, DN4-3 by Follmer. Only one other made an appearance in competition, and that was two years after the Can-Am's demise. Since its completion serial number DN4-4A had been kept at Don Nichols' California shop until his phone rang one day in the summer of 1976. At the other end of the line was Harvey Hudes, owner of Canada's famed Mosport Park racing circuit. Hudes was beating the bushes to fill out a lightly-populated World Sports Car Championship race grid suffering from the woes of the energy crunch, and he hoped the Shadow and other ex-Can-Am racers would oblige. Nichols took up the challenge, bringing DN4-4A and driver Jackie Oliver across the border to help out his old friend. It was the only appearance by the car in competition and, after taking the pole, setting a new lap record and leading the entire race, it won going away from the second place McLaren M20 driven by Oliver's ex-teammate George Follmer.
'The car acquitted itself very well that day,' recalls Nichols, 'running against the Porsche and Renault factory race teams and drivers like Jackie Ickx.' After that, it disappeared until just recently, when Don Nichols announced it would be crossing the block at Mecum Auction's Monterey, CA Daytime Auction on August 18. More information about the car and the sale can be found at mecum.com.
