This 924 Carrera GT LeMans series number 924 003, was one of three factory entries in the 1980 24 Hours of LeMans. Originally, it was to be driven by Al Hobert and Peter Gregg. After Peter Gregg was involved in a road accident in France, Derek Bell was quickly substituted in Peter's place.
The car was Bell's first drive for the Porsche factory team and the beginning of a long and very successful career with Porsche and Al Holbert. With just 320 horsepower, 924 003 was able to reach 175 miles per hour at Le Mans and due to Derek Bell and Al Holbert's incredible driving through a rain soaked race, they finished a remarkable thirteenth overall, after qualifying back in the field.
924 003 is the only 924 Carrera GT LeMans in private hands. The two other remaining cars are still owned today by Porsche.
