2009 RM Auctions
Production of the fastback Ghibli began in April 1967, with the spider variant beginning in 1969. Power was from a 4719cc V8 engine with dry-sump lubrication and chain-driven camshafts that was enlarged to 4930cc displacement in 1970. The 4.9-liter SS version was a race-bred four overhead camshaft engine that was a direct descendant of the motor that had powered Maserati's legendary 450S in 1957. The car could accelerate to 60 mph in less than seven seconds with a top speed of 160 mph. There were dual 50-liter fuel tanks that provided a long-distance touring range of up to 450 miles. There were just 1,274 Ghiblis produced between 1967 and 1972.
This Maserati Ghibli was built in March of 1971 and remains mostly original and in excellent order. It was shipped from the factory to Grossman Motors of Nyack, New Jersey and has remained in the United States since that time. It has power steering, power windows and factory-installed air conditioning and a tan Connolly leather interior.
In 2009, it was offered for sale at the Vintage Motor Cars of Meadow Brook presented by RM Auctions. It was estimated to sell for $70,000 - $90,000 and was offered without reserve. The lot was sold for the sum of $71,500 including buyer's premium.
