The Alero provides midsize vehicle buyers sporty styling, precise handling, a smooth ride and spirited performance. The Alero is an essential part of the Oldsmobile portfolio, representing about 40 percent of the division's total volume. 2003 Oldsmobile Alero
'The Alero is the best-selling vehicle in the Oldsmobile lineup,' said Tim Roush, Alero marketing director. 'Despite the fact that it ends production in 2004, the Alero will continue to provide value with a fun-to-drive attitude, offering customers additional amenities like satellite radio.'

The Alero will offer XM Satellite Radio as an option for the 2003 model year, the only Oldsmobile to do so.

XM Radio features 100 coast-to-coast digital quality channels, including 71 music channels (more than 30 of them commercial-free) from hip-hop to opera and classical to country bluegrass to blues and 29 channels of sports, talk, children's and entertainment programming. XM also brings to the car, for the first time on radio, a diverse selection of 24-hour news sources previously available only in the home. And XM's next-generation sound quality technology provides superior sound remarkably close to compact disc. Consumers can subscribe to XM Radio for $9.99 a month.

'XM Satellite Radio is a great option for Alero buyers, who love to listen to music,' said Roush.

Powerful, efficient engine
For 2003, Alero will offer the same all-aluminum, Ecotec 2.2L dual overhead cam engine. The inline four-cylinder engine, designed by an international team of engineers from Opel, GM Powertrain and Saab, achieves 140 hp at 5600 rpm, 150 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm, and is standard on GX and GL1 models.

The engine delivers performance, efficiency, low maintenance and smooth operation, with technology typically found in premium six- and eight-cylinder engines, including hydraulic roller finger valve operation.

Twin balance shafts help provide quieter, smoother performance. These shafts, located in the cylinder block, help cancel out the shaking forces inherent in an inline four-cylinder engine, resulting in smooth performance from idle to maximum engine speed. The alternator, air-conditioning compressor, and power steering pump are directly mounted to the engine for vibration suppression. Cast iron cylinder liners enhance durability.

The Ecotec engine also offers great fuel economy. The DOHC engine achieves 25 mpg city/33 mpg highway with the manual transmission, and 24 mpg city/32 mpg highway with the automatic.

Five-speed manual transmission
Alero began offering a five-speed manual transmission in 2001, the only Oldsmobile to offer a manual. For the 2003 model year, the five-speed transmission is an option on the GX and GL1 models with the Ecotec.
