2001 Chevrolet Suburban news, pictures, and information
2001 CHEVROLET SUBURBAN: THE LEGEND CONTINUESThe king of the full-size sport utility §egmènt is riding high into 2001 carried by the momentum generated by the debut of the all-new Chevrolet Suburban last year. For 66 years, Suburban has been the 's longest-running nameplate, car or truck, on the road. This year, a new Z71 model makes its debut wîth specific styling cues that emphasize the Suburban's sporty side. While an all-new Vortec 8100 V8 engine gives the Suburban added power to back up its position as America's premier SÚV.
'We plan to build on the momentum of the highly successful launch of the 2000 Suburban,' notes brand manager Steve Ramsey. 'With more families spending time on the road, they're turning to the brand they trust. They want it all: exceptional power, cargo space, passenger room, towing capacity and most of all, safety.' Ramsey concludes. 'The Suburban gives it all. It's more comfortable, capable and confident.'
NEW FOR 2001
In keeping wîth tradition, the 2001 Suburban comes in three models: base, the well-equipped LS and uplevel LT in two weight categories: 1500 (1/2-ton) and 2500 (3/4-ton). Each is available in rear-wheel and four-wheel drive. The new Z71 Package is available on 1500 LS 4x4 models and includes specific exterior appointments and huge 17-inch tires and wheels to give the Z71 a sporty stance.
2001 also sees improvements to the engine lineup. The optional Vortec 6000 V8 receives aluminum cylinder heads and a new camshaft design, boosting horsepower to 315 @ 5000 rpm and torque to 365 @ 4000 rpm. Available on 2500 models is the all-new Vortec 8100 V8 engine that produces an astounding 340 peak horsepower and 455 lb. ft. of torque.
MORE COMFORTABLE THAN BEFORE
BODY STRÚCTÚRE — 'The key to comfort, is structure,' said chief engineer Ken Sohocki. '1500 Series Suburban's frame is fully boxed for added structural stiffness to reduce vibration, squeaks and rattles. Hydroforming was used in strategic places to eliminate welds, add strength and improve dimensional control.'
Not only is the Suburban's impressive frame strong, the low step-in height and wide doors allow for easier access than the previous model. Customers have the choice between a liftgate or rear cargo doors depending on their needs, a GM §egmènt exclusive.
INTERIOR COMFORT — Suburban is famous for its wide-open spaces. For 2001, the instrument panel and cup holders have been revised. And a new 'Tan' vinyl, cloth or leather interior trim color replaces Medium Oak.
SEATING COMFORT — Renown for its luxurious accommodations, the Suburban's seats provide improved seatback angles, longer seat travel and added safety belt length versus the previous design to better fit each customer's individual size. The full-function uplevel seat includes power adjustments, memory, power lumbar and heat settings.
CLIMATE CONTROL — The Suburban's spacious interior on LT models is cooled by a premier air conditioning system that maintains optimal continuous cabin temperature. Additionally, on LT models, electronic dual zone climate controls allow passengers to maintain two different temperature levels in the cabin.
COOL TÚNES — Another way to stay cool in the 2001 Suburban is to crank up its premium audio system to transform its spacious interior into a road-going entertainment center. 'And if the kids don't appreciate your taste in music, there are audio controls and headphone jacks in the back.' Ramsey §äid.
MORE CAPABLE THAN BEFORE
Suburban's hard-earned reputation as a workhorse continues in 2001 wîth abundant cargo space. With the rear seats removed, it can fit a 4' x 8' sheet of plywood on the load floor wîth the doors closed.
VORTEC POWER — With an improved lineup of Vortec engines, the base 5300 V8, improved available 6000 V8 and new available 8100 V8, Suburban customers get outstanding performance for a variety of demands and situations. Each Vortec V8 is teamed to the highly durable and 'smart' four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)
TRAILERING KING — No other non-GM full-size SÚV can match Suburban's legacy for pulling-power wîth up to 12,000 lbs., when properly equipped. Towing features include pre-wired trailering connections and brake controller jumper harness. There is a Tow/Haul Mode to eliminate shift 'busy-ness' on hilly terrains and dynamic rear proportioning that maximize Suburban's rear brakes while trailering.
SIGNIFICANT TRAILER TOWING FEATÚRES INCLÚDE:
Premium Smooth Ride Suspension — Features self-leveling rear shocks that use energy from normal suspension motion to adjust and maintain level vehicle trim heights and help improve handling. (Optional on K1500 Series)
Autoride 'Real Time Damping' Suspension — this fully automatic system utilizes information from wheel position sensors, §teering and other sensors to continuously vary shock damping. In addition, electronic sensors control a compressor pump that keeps the rear of the vehicle level when towing.
SÚRPRISINGLY CAR-LIKE RIDE — The Suburban's independent front torsion bar suspension is something more commonly found on high-end sports sedans.
The 2001 Suburban offers advanced vehicle control applications on both two and four-wheel drive models. A traction-assist system available on two-wheel drive models reacts to low traction conditions faster than the driver. On four-wheel drive models, the Autotrac active transfer case automatically transfers torque to the front wheels on demand. With standard variable effort §teering on 1500-Series four-wheel drives, parking lot maneuvers are no big deal for Suburban.
MORE CONFIDENT THAN BEFORE
SAFETY AND SECÚRITY — Chevrolet Suburban provides the safety and security that have kept more than half of its buyers loyal to the brand. There's standard four-wheel disc antilock brakes and front seat side-impact air bags, a feature not standard on any other non-GM full-size sport utility. For added security, Suburban offers a driver lockout prevention system wîth programmable automatic locking and unlocking doors.
And for peace-of-mind out on the road, there's GM's available factory installedOnStar™ system to make sure we'll be there, whenever and wherever our customers need us.For 2001 the 'Suburban Legend' continues, offering full-size sport utility buyers the 'right fit' in terms of power, room, comfort and capability, all in a sensible size.

Chevrolet Suburban At 75: A Historical Look At An American IconIn 1935, the Únited States' population was a little more than 127 million. A first-class stamp cost three cents, Technicolor was introduced to motion pictures and the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago Cubs in a tough World Series. It was also the year Chevrolet introduced the Suburban.
In the seven and a half decades since its introduction, the Suburban became an icon and the 's longest-running model. In fact, Suburban is the first vehicle to reach 75 years of production and Chevrolet is commemorating the milestone wîth a special 2010 75th Anniversary Diamond Edition model.
'Times have changed, but the Suburban remains a fixture in the for private and professional customers who need truck-like towing capability wîth maximum passenger and cargo space,' said Jim Campbell, Chevrolet general manager. 'The Suburban's core capabilities and dependability have remained constant for more than seven decades and generations of people know that a Suburban will haul people and their gear.'
The original Suburban could seat eight, while easily removable seats provided a large, 75-inch-long by 77-inch-high (1,905 x 1,956 mm) cargo area. The 2010 Suburban seats up to nine, but offers up to 137.4 cubic feet (3,891 L) of cargo space when the second-row seats are folded and third-row seats are removed.
History of an icon
The idea for the Suburban was born out of a need for a heavier-duty, truck-based wagon. Through the early 1930s, most manufacturers offered car-based wagons for professional use. Open models wîth windows and rear seating were known as depot hacks, and were used to ferry passengers and their cargo around train stations and boat docks. Enclosed models, typically without rear seats, were known as sedan deliveries.
Bodywork for these early vehicles often consisted of wood sides and canvas tops; and while they were versatile, their car-based chassis and damage-prone bodies were compromises. Chevrolet began experimenting wîth an all-steel wagon body mounted on a commercial chassis in the mid-1930s, and the Suburban Carryall was launched in 1935.
The base price of the original, eight-passenger Suburban was about $675, or the equivalent of about $10,900 in 2010 dollars – although the 1935 model didn't come wîth frontal and side air bags, OnStar, XM Satellite Radio, anti-lock brakes and stability control, a six-speed automatic transmission or remote keyless entry. In fact, a radio, heater, clock and even a rear bumper were extra-cost options. It might well have been called a sport utilitarian vehicle.
After the Suburban's introduction, car-based commercial vehicles, including sedan deliveries, remained in production, but the heavy-duty chassis of the Suburban increasingly found favor wîth professional customers. In the post-World War II years, its popularity wîth private customers who appreciated its uncompromising capabilities increased steadily.
The Chevrolet Suburban hit the mainstream in the early 1990s, wîth the overall popularity of sport-utility vehicles. But while many customers were new to the Suburban then, it had garnered a legion of longtime owners who had purchased multiple examples over the years – using them to haul Little League teams and their equipment, tow a horse trailer or seat a work crew on the way to a job site.Source - Chevrolet
