The Bentley R-Type shared a nearly identical front end to the Mark VI. They were given custom coachwork and powered by a straight-6 engine fed by twin SU carburetors. The base engine displaced 4.6 liters while the Continental version had a larger bore and a displacement size of 4.9 liters.
The cars had a four-speed manual transmission with a four-speed automatic being offered as optional equipment.
