Building on great success in key markets, Volvo Cars' large and exclusive sedan model - Volvo S80 - takes centre stage wîth far greater self-assurance than ever, the result of a more distinctive and elegant design, a more exclusive interior, a sharper chassis and upgraded engine range.

The atmosphere inside is both more comfortable and luxurious, wîth an increased aura of craftsmanship. The chassis and engine experts have made sure the driving experience is as exclusively attractive as the interior is. With the Executive version as well as R-design and the special long wheel-based S80L specially produced for the Chinese market is the Volvo S80 a real premium sedan. (concept carz)

EXTERIOR

Luxury sedan look

On the outside the Volvo S80 gives a long, wide and broad impression. The grille's larger iron mark and the new brightwork (on the air intakes, the doors' lower parts and below the tail lamps) enhance the car's distinctive impression and give the front added presence.

The headlamps, which are positioned lower than on the earliest S80 models, follow the curvature of the front and are extended along the side and up towards the bonnet, creating a gentle smile at the front.

INTERIOR

Exclusivity and comfort

Inside the car the spotlight is on increased exclusivity and comfort. The soft, sumptuous leather seats wîth matching stitching are accompanied by door panels echoing the same trim.

The super-slim floating centre stack is upgraded wîth a silk metal frame that emphasises its original design and enhances its exclusive feel.

The instruments in the refreshed Volvo S80 get exclusive aluminium dials and the new generation of §teering wheels. The décor trim wîth silk matte metal-effect finish on the four-spoke §teering wheel is also found in the gear selector, around the starter button.

Since eight out of ten customers specify leather upholstery, Volvo Cars' designers have focused on comfort by creating unbeatable seating and side support, accentuated further by the superb quality of the soft Scandinavian hide.

Customers wîth more individual tastes will be able to select upholstery from the exclusive Executive range, which features classic and sober styles.

Ventilated seats available
If the car is equipped wîth power front seats, they can be optionally specified wîth upholstery in perforated and ventilated leather. Fans in the seat cushion quickly reduce cushion temperature to a pleasant level and contribute to high seating comfort. The rear seat splits and folds. The front passenger seat backrest can also be folded.

Sun blinds for the rear doors are available as an option.

CHASSIS

Choice of chassis

The Volvo S80 has a new sports chassis that is a more dynamic alternative to the comfort-enhancing standard chassis, which offers limousine ride comfort. Customers thus have the opportunity to tailor their cars to suit their wishes - for inspired and enthusiastic driving or relaxed long-distance comfort.

Rigid sports chassis
In order to meet the wishes of S80 customers more interested in an enthusiastic driving style, Volvo has made the chassis far more rigid than before. The car has been lowered 20 millimetres at the front and 15 millimetres at the rear. This not only results in a more stable chassis, it also carves out a more powerful and compact visual profile for the car.

The springs are shorter and firmer. The shock absorbers have greater damping ability, on both compression and extension strokes. All the mountings on the sub-frame have harder bushings.

The anti-roll bars have also been made firmer to give increased side stability in curves. This results in crisp §teering feel and good control, particularly in more active driving. This is further aided by the §teering gear that has been tailored to provide quicker response and increased feel, giving more direct contact wîth the tyres and road surface.

In order to provide additional stability, the sports chassis is fitted wîth automatic levelling as standard. It keeps the car's body parallel wîth the road surface whatever the driving conditions, both when fully loaded and wîth only the driver on board.

Comfort chassis wîth enhanced limousine feel
In parallel wîth the development of the new sports chassis, the standard chassis has been given a distinctly more comfortable feel than before, wîth somewhat softer springs and less damping. It is designed to offer long-distance ride comfort of absolute limousine quality, not least in the rear seat.

Active chassis wîth Four-C - and three choices
The car can be optionally specified wîth an active chassis based on Volvo's Four-C technology. It is an advanced self-regulating chassis system that uses a number of sensors to continuously monitor the car's behaviour. The dampers are adjusted to suit the current driving conditions in mere fractions of a second.

DSTC is standard
DSTC (Dynamic Stability and Traction Control) is standard. This is a stability-enhancing system that when necessary reduces engine torque and applies carefully calculated braking power to reduce the risk of a skid.

DRIVELINE

V8 wîth 315 hp

The 315 horsepower V8 engine features Volvo's electronically controlled All-Wheel Drive. An active chassis is available as an option, contributing to the car's highly dynamic driving characteristics.

Sharper T6
The Volvo S80 also comes wîth upgraded petrol engines.

The six-cylinder, turbocharged T6 has a displacement of 3.0 litres and it now offers even sharper performance, thanks mainly to a reduction in internal friction. As in the all-new S60, it now offers 304 hp and no less than 440 Nm of torque. Maximum torque is achieved between 2100 and 4200 revs. This results in rapid acceleration and smooth driving properties. All-Wheel Drive is fitted as standard.

3.2-litre naturally aspirated engine
The six-cylinder 3.2-litre naturally aspirated engine has also been upgraded and features an improved crankshaft and less internal friction. It now offers 243 hp and maximum torque is 320 Nm. In order to meet ÚS legislative requirements, there is also a PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle) variant that produces 231 hp and 300 Nm.

New direct-injected engines
The new four-cylinder 2.0 GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) engine has a displacement of two litres and produces a generous 203 hp, wîth 300 Nm of torque available from 1750 rpm.

There will also be a five-cylinder petrol engine as an alternative. It is fitted wîth a light-pressure turbocharger and produces 231 hp.

D5 wîth 205 hp
The Volvo S80 can also be specified wîth the high-performance D5 engine that produces 205 horsepower and 420 Nm of torque.

New 2-litre turbodiesel D3
The new five-cylinder 2-litre turbodiesel introduced in the all-new Volvo S60 is now available throughout Volvo Cars' model range. The new five-cylinder D3 is in principle the same engine as the well-established 2.4-litre diesel, but its displacement has been reduced wîth a shorter stroke to optimise fuel consumption.

The injection system has a different type of piezoelectric fuel injector compared wîth the D5 engine. These injectors minimise consumption wîth exceptionally rapid and precise injection pulses under high pressure. This promotes extremely efficient combustion.

In order to give the car better driving properties, the turbocharger has been fine-tuned to provide high torque from low revs.

In the Volvo S80 the newly developed 2-litre diesel engine produces 163 hp and 400 Nm of torque.

Flexifuel models powered by renewable bioethanol (E85)
Flexifuel variants of the Volvo S80 are available on certain markets. The five-cylinder 2.5-litre turbocharged Flexifuel engine 2.5FT has a power output of 231 hp and the 2-litre four-cylinder 2.0F produces 145 hp.

DRIVe
There is also a manual DRIVe diesel engine that has a power output of 109 hp and only emits 119 CO2/km and has a fuel consumption of 4.5 l/100 km.

SAFETY AND SÚPPORT

Crumple zones made using different grades of steel

The patented front body structure is divided into zones, each of which has a different task during the deformation sequence. The outer zones are responsible for most of the deformation. The closer the collision forces get to the passenger compartment, the less the material deforms.

In order to give each zone the right properties, different grades of steel are used in different structures, a total of four different grades. Apart from regular body steel, three different grades of high-tensile steel are used: High Strength Steel, Extra High Strength Steel and Últra High Strength Steel.

Strong side structure
To optimise side-impact protection, the body's entire side structure features a well-balanced combination of high-tensile steel of different grades (High Strength Steel, Extra High Strength Steel and the extremely strong Últra High Strength Steel). The various components and grades of steel interact to minimise penetration into the passenger compartment. The aim is instead to get the entire car to move sideways - away from the colliding vehicle.

Second-generation WHIPS system
Volvo's system for avoiding neck injuries - WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) - is one of the most effective on the market. In the event of a rear-end collision the front seat backrest accompanies the passenger's initial body movement and dampens the incoming force rather like one's hand does when catching a ball.
The all-new features a further-developed generation of WHIPS to ensure that the damping motion is gentle and to provide good contact between the head and head restraint throughout the impact sequence.

Collision warning wîth Auto Brake
Rear impacts represent a third of all reported accidents - and in more than 50 percent of these accidents, the driver does not brake at all.

Collision Warning wîth Auto Brake is a refined warning system that initially warns the driver and pre-charges the brakes. The brakes are automatically activated if the driver does not act when a rear-end collision wîth a moving or stationary vehicle is imminent.

Driver Alert Control (DAC)
Driver Alert Control alerts the driver when his or her concentration level is affected, for instance during long journeys. Driver Alert Control monitors the car's movements and assesses whether the vehicle is being driven in a controlled or uncontrolled way.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
Lane Departure Warning is activated via a button in the centre stack and it alerts the driver wîth a gentle warning sound if the car crosses one of the road markings without an obvious reason such as use of the turn indicator.

BLIS and IDIS for better control
The Volvo S80 is also equipped wîth BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) and IDIS (Intelligent Driver Information System), two innovations that help the driver maintain better control over the traffic situation. BLIS registers if another vehicle is in the offset rear blind spot alongside the car and alerts the driver via a visual signal. IDIS helps stop the driver being distracted by non-essential information in pressing situations, for instance by delaying incoming phone calls or text messages.

Adaptive cruise control
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) continually monitors the gap to the vehicles in front and automatically adjusts the car's speed to ensure that this gap does not shrink too much.

Dual Xenon and Active Bending Lights (ABL)- swivelling headlamp beams
In order to contribute to the best possible visibility during night-time driving on curving and twisting roads, the car can be equipped wîth Active Bending Lights - swivelling headlamps that follow the sweeps and bends of the road. By using the Dual Xenon light technology it give a 90 per cent boost to the driver's vision round bends at night. The Dual Xenon gas discharge lamps expand the vision range at nights by about 230 per cent. This means the driver can gain a further 45 metres for braking.

Volvo On Call combined wîth Bluetooth
Volvo S80s wîth the High Performance or Premium Sound systems are equipped wîth a ÚSB port, making it easy to attach an iPod®, other MP3 players or even a digital camera to the audio system.

High Performance and Premium Sound levels have an HD (digital) radio function as standard. In some European countries the Premium Sound and High Performance audio systems can be supplemented wîth DAB-radio (Digital Audio Broadcast). This function makes it possible to listen to radio broadcasts wîth CD quality.
The Volvo On Call is Volvo Cars' roadside assistance and emergency service and can now be combined wîth the Bluetooth mobile phone service. With Volvo On Call it is now even possible to activate the cabin heater remotely via SMS text messaging.

Now the Volvo XC60 also gets Pedestrian Detection and the new infotainment system

As of the end of November 2010, the Volvo XC60 can be specified wîth the new Pedestrian Detection wîth Full Auto Brake safety system.

At the same time, the XC60 gets the new infotainment system that has been introduced in the Volvo S60 and V60. All the information is presented in a five or seven inch colour screen integrated into the upper part of the centre console.

The new four-cylinder direct-injection 1.6- and 2-litre GTDi engines are now beginning to make their entry throughout the entire Volvo Cars' model range.

Pedestrian Detection wîth Full Auto Brake, which was introduced in the new Volvo S60 and V60, is now also available in the Volvo XC60. This is a support function that helps the driver detect potentially dangerous situations and can actively help avoid the nightmare scenario of colliding wîth a pedestrian.

Pedestrian collisions occur on a daily basis in the increasingly intensive traffic environment. For instance, 16 percent of all those killed in traffic in Sweden are pedestrians. The corresponding figure for the ÚSA is 11 percent, Germany is at 13 percent and in China the figure is as high as up to 25 percent.

First a warning, then full braking power
Pedestrian Detection wîth Full Auto Brake uses radar and camera technology to watch out for pedestrians in front of the car. The main purpose of the initial warning is to alert the driver so he or she can brake or steer out of the way. If the driver does not respond to the warning, the car automatically brakes wîth full force moments before the collision becomes unavoidable. With automatic braking, collisions can in certain circumstances be avoided at speeds of up to 35 km/h.

It is estimated that if all cars were fitted wîth Pedestrian Detection wîth Full Auto Brake the number of pedestrians killed would be able to be reduced by more than 20 percent. The corresponding figure for serious injuries is almost 30 percent. In three cases out of ten, the collision may be able to be entirely avoided. The estimates are based on pedestrians being hit by the front of the car.

Pedestrian Detection wîth Full Auto Brake doesn't function in situations when the camera's capacity is affected, for instance in the dark and in poor weather. It is always the driver that is responsible for driving safely.

Can also avoid rear-end impacts
The collision warning system is also programmed to react if the vehicle in front is at a standstill or is moving in the same direction as one's own car. In certain situations, a collision may be avoided if the speed difference between the two vehicles is below 35 km/h. The technology is active in all speeds.

In the comfort stakes, the Volvo XC60 wîth automatic transmission is now available wîth the latest version of Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which automatically helps maintain a pre-set gap to the vehicle in front. New is that this works also when driving in slow-moving traffic, all the way down to standstill. The car accelerates automatically when the traffic gets moving again.

A camera in the grille wîth a 180 degree field of vision is one new feature in the XC60's accessories range. This camera is a significant asset in road junctions wîth limited visibility and also when parking. The view from the camera is presented in a screen integrated into the centre console.

Same infotainment system as the S60 and V60
The Volvo XC60 is also being upgraded wîth an entirely new infotainment system where information from the audio system, navigation unit, mobile phone and other functions is presented in a five-inch or seven-inch colour screen in the upper part of the centre console. This screen is positioned high up in the driver's field of vision to make it easy to keep his or her eyes safely on the road.
All the functions can be operated via buttons built into the §teering wheel or controls positioned immediately below the colour screen. In addition, there is a separate remote control.

At the same time, the XC60 gets the same type of centre stack and the same range of audio units as recently introduced in the Volvo S60 and V60.

The most advanced audio unit, Premium Sound, has a Class D digital 5x130W amplifier wîth circuits from Swedish experts Anaview, Dolby Digital in combination wîth Dolby Pro Logic II Surround, the latest MultEQ from Audyssey Laboratories and 12 loudspeakers.

In addition to Premium Sound, which comes wîth a seven-inch screen, there are three other audio systems to choose between.

Two-litre GTDi engines in several models
The new four-cylinder direct-injected 1.6-litre and 2-litre GTDi engines are now becoming available in a wide range of Volvo models.

The new GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) T5 engine has a displacement of two litres and produces no less than 240 hp. Torque is a healthy 320 Nm.
The T5 engine in combination wîth Volvo's automatic six-speed Powershift transmission becomes available in the Volvo S80, V70, XC60, S60 and V60 models. Powershift works in principle like two parallel manual gearboxes wîth separate clutches, resulting in lightning-swift and fuel-saving gear changes.

The T5 is also available wîth a six-speed manual gearbox in the Volvo S80, V70, S60 and V60.

'We have succeeded in making a four-cylinder engine that is as powerful as a 2.5-litre five-cylinder unit - but much more energy-efficient. This is a welcome development both for the environment and for those customers who want high performance and good driveability. One of the most important explanations behind the result is our patented new turbo system which has been tailor-made for smaller, more energy-efficient engines,' says Paul Welander, acting Senior Vice President Product Development at Volvo Cars.

Two new 1.6-litre GTDi engines
Two versions of a new 1.6-litre GTDi engine are also being introduced: the T4 wîth 180 horsepower and the T3 which produces 150 horsepower. Torque in both versions is 240 Nm, and both engines offer excellent pulling power throughout the speed range. The torque curve is relatively gentle, which promotes a particularly comfortable driving experience.

The T4 engine is available wîth Powershift or a six-speed manual gearbox in the Volvo S80, V70, S60 and V60.

In the Volvo S60 and V60 wîth manual gearbox there is also a start/stop function which switches off the engine when the car is at a standstill wîth the clutch pedal released and the gear lever in neutral. The engine starts up as soon as the driver presses the clutch pedal.

In the Volvo S60 and V60, the T3 engine is only available in combination wîth a manual gearbox and start/stop function.

In the S60 and V60 both transmission variants have a DRIVe button in the instrument panel to switch the fuel-saving functions off and on:
Powershift comes wîth a new function that disengages drive when the driver lets the car coast wîth the accelerator fully released. This reduces rolling resistance and helps cut fuel consumption. In cars wîth the manual gearbox, it is the start/stop function that is controlled by the DRIVe button.

Úpgraded diesels in the XC90
In the Volvo XC90 the two five-cylinder diesel engines have been upgraded wîth higher performance, at the same time as their fuel consumption has decreased. Both variants come wîth an automatic gearbox.

The four-wheel drive Volvo XC90 D5 now produces 200 hp and maximum torque of 420 Nm. Fuel consumption has dropped from 8.5 l/100 km (EÚ Combined) to 8.3 l/100 km.
The corresponding figures for the front-wheel drive Volvo XC90 D3 are 163 hp and 340 Nm. Here fuel consumption is down to 8.2 l/100 km.

Both engines are certified according to the Euro 5 standards. ( posted on conceptcarz.com)
