1967 BMW 1600

The Glas GT fastback coupe was introduced in September of 1963 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Wearing a design by Italy's Frua coachworks and bodied by the Maggiora coachworks, the cars were produced by small independent Bavarian manufacturer Hans Glas GmbH in Dingolfing, Germany. Sales were good, but the company's decline prompted the Bavarian government to enlist BMW to take over its operations and maintain employment at Dingolfing.

It is believed that 1,255 unused Glas GT bodies remained after the BWM takeover. Their rear floor pans were modified to accept BMW's rear-suspension system, the Glas front suspension was retained, and the power train of the 1600ti sedan. The grille was updated, and circular taillights plus the BMW roundel were added. Modifications included the relocation of the fuel tank to the trunk floor and an upgrade to 12-volt electronics.

From September of 1967 through August of 1968, just 1,255 examples of the BMW 1600 GT were built, spanning serial numbers W001001 through W002256.

It is believed that just 13 examples of the BMW 1600 GT are in the United States.
