Alex Barron raced in the American Toyota Atlantic series, winning that championship in 1997. The following year, he drove for Dan Gurney's Champ Car team in the CART FedEx World Series Championship. In 1999, he moved to Roger Penske's team. He drove a few events in that series in 2000 and 2001. He made his first Indy Racing League Northern Lights Series start in 2001. In 2002, he was the Co-Rookie of the Year in the Indianapolis 500.
