The Brawn BGP 001 was the first - and only - F1 car used by the Brawn GP team. The car made its debut at Silverstone in the United Kingdom on March 6th of 2009. Team drivers included Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello. It was designed throughout 2008 and 2009 by Honda and then Brawn after the change-over. The design was by Loic Bigois, in similar guise to many other modern F1 cars. It had a molded carbon fiber and honeycomb composite monocoque and a suspension setup comprised of wishbones and pushrod activated torsion springs and rockers.
The car was involved in the diffuser appeal which was rejected by the FIA deeming the car's diffuser legal. Powering the car was a Mercedes-Benz 2.4-liter V8 engine mated to a 7-speed semi-automatic gearbox.
In late 2008, Honda withdrew from Formula 1 and put their F1 operation up for sale. Though interest in the company was strong, a buyer could not be found. This led to a management buy-out by team principle Ross Brawn. The new team was given the name 'Brawn GP.'
As the season began, it was clear that Honda's withdrawal was a mistake. They had begun work on a new car during the 2008 season, and many predicted that the team would have a great 2009 season. The new car, painted in white with Day-Glo yellow stripe livery, proved to be a very fast and capable car. Button and Barrichello drove their cars to a one-two victory during the season opening Australian Grand Prix. Ferrari and McLaren, the prior year's top contenders, failed to score points. During the first seven races, Button scored six wins. By this point, most of the other teams had caught up, and were mounting a comeback. One of the biggest challengers came from the Red Bull RB5.
The Brawn team would hold onto their lead, mostly because each of the last few races had different winners. The Brawn GP F1 team would finish the season in first place in the World Constructors Championship after having earned 172 points. Jenson Button would win the Drivers' Championship.

![]() | Maranello, 20 May – It's been many, too many years since the roulette wheel has stopped on Red in Monte Carlo. The last time a Ferrari won the Monaco Grand Prix was back in 2001, when Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello secured an amazing one-two. Since then, no Ferrari has been first past the chequered flag, even in those years when Maranello's technical superiority seemed beyond doubt, such as 2002 and 2004. However, there have been plenty of podium finishes in the past eleven...[Read more...] |

| Fernando Alonso: Shedding the Paradigms of a Champion | |
| If, while watching a Formula One race, you see one car in particular losing parts, and yet, seemingly going faster, you've found Fernando Alonso. Sometimes it would appear the aerodynamically sensitive pieces, like the barge boards and diffuser strakes, only slow Alonso down. No matter what, this twenty-five year old double-world champion makes Formula One fun again. Breathtaking speeds and pieces of bodywork slung off in all directions like a sparkler on the fourth of July all add to the specta...[Read more...] | |
