1929 Chrysler Series 65

Walter Chrysler founded the Chrysler company in mid-1925, when the Maxwell Motor Company, whose existence began in 1904, was reorganized. Mr. Chrysler had worked with the ailing Maxwell-Chalmers company since the early 1920s, but the post-War recession and economic troubles of the early 1920s led to the end of Chalmers automobile production in late 1923.

The Chrysler automobiles were powered by six-cylinder engines while the Maxwell continued to be powered by four-cylinder engines. Production of the Maxwell ended in 1925 and for the following year, a new four-cylinder Chrysler emerged. Four- and six-cylinder models were offered by Chrysler through 1928, and in 1929, the four-cylinder Chryslers were renamed Plymouths. The entry-level Chrysler was now the Series 65 and came with a six-cylinder engine that offered 65 BHP. They were available as a roadster, tourer, 2- and 4-door sedan, 5-window coupe, and business coupe. Pricing ranged from $1065 to $1150. The wheelbase measured 112.75 inches and rode on 5.50 x 18 tires. Standard equipment included Lockheed internal hydraulic brakes and hydraulic shock absorbers.

New this year was an ignition keyhole that replaced the old switch type. There were now bowl-shaped headlights, silver and black finished instrument panels, and arched windows.

The Series 75 was the intermediate Chrysler and the Imperial 'L' was the top-of-the-line model. The Series 75 employed a 248.9 cubic-inch inline-6 with seven main bearings, solid valve lifters, a Ball & Ball carburetor, and delivered 75 horsepower at 3,200 RPM. The Imperial had a 309.3 cubic-inch inline-6 with 110 horsepower at 3,200 RPM. With the optional 6.0:1 compression ratio, horsepower rose to 112 bhp. All engines were backed by a three-speed manual transmission with conventional clutch and floor shift controls.
