By 1949, a more luxurious 170S series became available as a cabriolet and a coupe. While it retained some elements and technology from the pre-war period, as a transition model it became a platform for change. It is estimated that fewer than 70 examples exist today.
The 170V and 170S helped lead the production recovery of Mercedes-Benzes. From 214 vehicles produced in 1946, production rose to 5,116 in 1948, 17,417 in 1949 and 33,906 in 1950.
This 170S Cabriolet is one of 813 units built between 1949 and 1952. It was brought to the United States in 1951 by a United States Army officer. Today it is completely and correctly restored including even the original fitted luggage.
The Mercedes-Benz Type 170S was added to the lineup for 1949. It came with a 15-inch wheels and a 1767cc, L-head four-cylinder engine that offered just over 50 horsepower. Styling was similar to the Type 230 from the pre-War era and was available as a cabriolet and a sedan.
The 170S was a landmark model for the Stuttgart-based manufacturer. It had an oval-tube backbone-type chassis, modern double wishbone/coil spring design being adopted at the front, while at the rear the track was widened and telescopic shock absorbers fitted.
Between 1949 and 1951, Mercedes-Benz produced 2,433 examples of the soft-top 170S Cabriolet.

The Mercedes-Benz 170 Series was produced from 1949 until February of 1955. It made its introduction at the 1949 IAA in Hannover and much of its design and mechanical components were sourced from pre-War models. The first 170 engine was produced in February 1946 with production of commercial vehicles starting later that year. In May of 1947, the 170V sedan entered into production and continued to be the only model made until 1949. A diesel engine was introduced for the 170 in 1949. This was the world's third diesel fueled passenger car and the first to be introduced after the war. The range of models in the 170S would grow to include 2 and 4 door sedans and 2 or 4 seat convertibles.
