Dirt Track Racers, such as this 1927 Chevy Outlaw Sprint, was a common fixture in the racing scene from the 1920s through the 1930s. The cars raced at fairgrounds, dirt tracks, and at tracks around the United States. They were popular in the Mid-West and the East Coast. Some of the cars went on to race in the first Indy 500 races. Several times drivers lost their lives from crashing while performing for the prize.
This Dirt Track racer was restored from 2004 to 2007. It is powered by a four-cylinder engine that offers (at least) 25 horsepower and rides on wire wheels.
There were predominately two types of dirt track racing events - open wheel racers in the Northeast and West and stock cars in the South. Stock cars, also known as fendered cars, were either purpose-built racecars or street vehicles that had been modified to varying degrees. The open wheel racecars were purpose-built racing vehicles.
