This Baker Roadster was purchased in 1907 as a gift to for the buyer's wife. After just 60 miles, the car encountered mechanical problems and was put into storage. It re-surfaced in San Diego, CA in the 1940s. It passed through several owners through the years; in 1999 it was given a restoration. The car is finished in black with red running gear and pinstripe. There are all-white tires and crimson leather upholstery. Powering the car is a 48 volt electric motor offering 3.5 horsepower. There is a planetary transmission, two-wheel mechanical drum brakes, and a wheelbase that measures 95 inches.
In 2011, the car was offered for sale at the Hershey Auction presented by RM Auctions. The car was estimated to sell for $70,000 - $90,000. As bidding came to a close, the car was sold for the sum of $123,750 inclusive of buyer's premium.
The Baker is powered by 16 batteries producing 96 volts driving a 3.5 horsepower electric motor and was advertised as the fastest electric car on the market capable of 30 mph. The motor operates through a planetary transmission. It rides on a 95-inch wheelbase with a solid front axle, live rear axle with semi-elliptical leaf springs and mechanical rear drum brakes.
The current owner originally acquired this car many years ago from a California collector who had restored it in 1999. At that time his collection of electric cars numbered fifteen. He sold off the entire collection several years ago, but recently re-acquired this car. It is the only baker roadster known to exist.
