1955 Buick Sideways Sprinter news, pictures, and information

Sprint Car

The late Ray Batts became so well known by his racing alias, Buddy Stewart, that most people never knew his given name. Much of his renown was built by his exploits in this speedster, a car that competitors claimed Stewart was so in touch wîth that he turned it sideways on a track's straightaway setting up for the coming turn.

Stewart campaigned the car in the famed 'Little 500' in Anderson, IN, at the Oswego Classic in upstate New York, at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds, and most often at Berlin Raceway where, in 1968, a rear end collision wîth the retaining wall ignited his fuel tank and caused severe burn injuries. That accident helped accelerate the movement away from the open cockpit, open wheel Sprint Car toward today's more common-appearing short-track stock car - a transition that Stewart also made after his mishap at Berlin.
