All-New 2013 Nissan Altima Tops Mid-Size Sedan Class in Style, Fuel Economy, Performance and Innovation

Two decades after the original Nissan Altima revolutionized the traditional mid-size sedan §egmènt in North America, Nissan's best-selling vehicle is about to shake up the category all over again. Making its world debut at the New York International Auto Show, the 2013 Nissan Altima is once again poised to become the new benchmark in the hotly contested §egmènt when it goes on sale at Nissan retailers nationwide this summer.

The new Altima offers numerous §egmènt defining attributes that enhance the ownership experience and provide real customer value, including:

'In a §egmènt as critical as this, wîth longtime nameplates and new challengers fighting for every sale, it's not enough to just target the competition. You have to think outside – and far above – the §egmènt,' said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America, Inc. 'We created the new Altima to set a clearly recognized benchmark for many years to come.'

Most Innovative Altima Ever
The 2013 Altima is one of five all-new Nissan models set for introduction in the next 15 months and, as the second best-selling car in the Únited States in 2011, much is riding on the new fifth generation Altima.

'The safe thing to do would be to follow other automakers' paths, conservatively evolving the Altima so as not to upset the existing owner base. But that would not be in keeping wîth Nissan's ‘Innovation for All' philosophy,' explained Carolin. 'We took our most successful model and changed nearly everything – the look, the feel, the driving experience and, of course, the technology down to even the headlights and windshield wipers.'

The result is a vehicle that builds on the strong fundamental reputation, earned over four generations and two decades, for quality and reliability and adds new levels of innovation, fuel-efficiency, dynamic performance and premium style.

'Against a fragmented competitive set, the new Altima is hands-down the most engaging, purposeful and energetic vehicle in class,' said Carolin. 'If you've liked the previous Altima, you'll love this one even more. And if you've never driven an Altima before, get ready to have your notion of a mid-size sedan redefined.'

A Premium Presence
Among the new Altima's many new features, perhaps the one that stands out most is its 'class above' appeal, which is apparent at first look and first touch of both the exterior and interior executions.

'Mid-size sedan buyers are traditionally motivated first and foremost by the rational aspects of the purchase decision – excellent value, reliability and comfort, which Altima shares wîth a number of other nameplates. But Altima buyers have never been satisfied wîth owning just another boring mid-size sedan,' said Carolin. 'The new Altima meets all of the rational purchase reasons, but delivers them in a way that is also emotionally rewarding. And it does so through both its dynamic appearance and dynamic driving performance.'

The 2013 Altima's all-new exterior design starts wîth its wide, aggressive stance and dramatic front end styling. Though retaining the same wheelbase as the previous generation Altima, it has a wider front and rear track (+1.4 inches) and deeper fenders (+0.8 inches each side) – which combine wîth a crisp new grille design, seamless bumper and projector-type headlights to create a bold, sophisticated appearance.

Altima's new 'premium proportions' continue wîth the longer sloping rear roofline and raised trunk that combine to create a more fluid silhouette. The A-pillar angle is now slightly more sloped, and the drip rail has been lowered and the waistline raised. In addition, the deep-stamped trunk has been raised and expanded. The new body design is capped by large taillights (with LED taillights standard on SL models) that flow from the rear into the bodysides. Chrome trim and door handles accent the available palette of eight rich exterior colors. Attention to aerodynamic fine-tuning gives the new Altima a lower coefficient of drag.

'The new Altima represents an astonishing transformation – fresh but still pure Altima, aggressive and premium at the same time. The new look is fit and athletic, just the way Altima drives,' added Carolin. 'And inside, the interior is nothing short of a revolution – wîth one of the most dynamic, involving and complete makeover Nissan interior designs ever.'

The new Altima's interior defies mid-size sedan convention, rivaling upscale luxury sedans in ambience and sophistication. Like the exterior, there is a premium look and feel – from the driver's side cockpit to the front passenger and rear seating areas – wîth extensive use of upscale, soft-touch materials and craftsman-like attention to detail.

'The new Altima's interior offers just the right balance of mature sophistication wîth a highly dynamic and emotional edge. It's refined, not gimmicky, wîth features that you'd expect to find on a much more expensive vehicle,' said Carolin.

NASA-Inspired 'Zero-Gravity' Seats, Quiet Cabin
In the desire to help reduce the fatigue experienced during long commutes or extended road trips, Nissan turned to seating and posture research from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). According to NASA, the least fatiguing seats are those that come closest to a 'neutral posture' – a relaxed position that the human body takes in a weightless environment.

Útilizing a new articulated seat shape wîth continuous support from the pelvis to the chest and distribution of localized deformation characteristics, the 'zero-gravity' Altima seats help reduce muscular and spinal loads, and improve blood flow – thereby helping reduce fatigue over long periods behind the wheel. Seat surface perforations provide increased ventilation, breathability and comfort. Heated front seats are also available.

'Reducing driver fatigue is something that shouldn't be limited to luxury vehicles, especially as Americans are making longer commutes and lòòking for alternatives to flying for business trips or family vacations,' said Carolin.

Along wîth premium seat comfort, the new Altima offers premium quietness through efforts to reduce cabin noise coming from the powertrain (new engine and exhaust mount designs), climate system (increased HVAC mounting rigidity) and the body (increased body rigidity) versus the previous Altima design. New noise absorption materials wîth a 30 percent increase in absorption capability (versus previous Altima) are also used throughout the cabin, including areas such as the roof trim, instrument panel and floor mats.

The 2013 Altima offers standard cloth seating wîth a 6-way driver's seat and a 4-way adjustable front passenger seat, 60/40 split folding rear bench seat wîth armrest, and Piano Black interior trim wîth chrome finish accents.

Also available, depending on model, are leather-appointed seats and trim, 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat wîth power lumbar support, and metallic texture (Charcoal interior) or wood tone (Blond interior) trim finishers.

Available audio systems include an AM/FM/CD design wîth RDS, MP3, aux-in and six speakers, along wîth a BOSE® Premium Audio System wîth nine speakers (including woofers), designed in conjunction wîth BOSE® engineers during vehicle development to deliver rich sound and acoustics. The new Altima is available wîth SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio (SiriusXM™ subscription required, sold separately), and Pandora® radio capability (requires capable smartphone).

'With its range of available audio features, the quiet Altima cabin is an ideal place to enjoy various music collections – whether you plug in your iPod®, sync wîth Pandora® to explore new tunes, or let someone DJ from the back seat wîth Bluetooth® Streaming Audio,' said Carolin.

New NissanConnectSM and NissanConnectSM wîth Navigation
Along wîth the new seat design, two other items that set the 2013 Altima apart are its new NissanConnectSM and Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display (ADAD).

The 2013 Altima is the first Nissan vehicle to offer NissanConnectSM, which offers Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System and Streaming Audio via Bluetooth®, along wîth available integrated Hands-Free Messaging Assistant, Pandora® integration, ÚSB connection for iPod® interface and other compatible devices and SiriusXM™ Satellite Radio (SiriusXM™ subscription required, sold separately). It includes a 5.0-inch color audio display wîth SV and SL models.

With the available Hands-Free Text Messaging Assistant (part of NissanConnectSM), drivers can manage incoming text messages via voice control without taking their hands from the wheel or eyes off the road. Drivers are alerted to an incoming text and, after initiating the system, can hear the text read out loud and respond via voice recognition, or via the §teering wheel switches using pre-set answers such as 'driving, can't text,' 'on my way,' 'running late,' 'okay' or a custom message.

The NissanConnectSM wîth Navigation system is similarly packed wîth a rich range of features and is incredibly easy to use wîth its 7.0-inch touch-screen, 3D-effect map views, Voice Recognition, and turn-by-turn navigation integrated into the Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display. With the ability to search destinations via Google®, POI data will never be out of date. Other new next-generation navigation features include speed limit display, eco driving maps, curve warning, and split-screen display.

Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display
The new Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display comes standard on every model and is customizable, easy-to-use and integrates key information right in front of the driver.

Located in the center of the instrument display between the tachometer and speedometer, it features a 4.0-inch color display, more than 400 percent larger than the previous generation Altima's vehicle information display. Útilizing more natural 3D-effect graphics, it helps the driver to keep his or her eyes on the road longer than a traditional center-stack information monitor.

'Drivers today are inundated wîth a flood of information from external devices, which can distract their attention from the road at any given moment,' said Carolin. 'The Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display is an intuitive and thoughtful feature that helps make life in an Altima a little easier.'

The system is customizable and adjustable using the §teering wheel controls, so drivers can view the information that is most important to them, including:
•Audio system display
•Instant MPG
•Trip computer
•Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) wîth individual tire pressure readouts
•Navigation system (if equipped), wîth destination turn-by-turn information and compass, and the ability to match the on-screen vehicle image wîth the actual car color

The ADAD's color LCD screen displays are similar to those used in portable consumer electronic devices, wîth cognition enhanced by the depth and tilt of the display.

Three screens are always available (CarView, Vehicle Settings and Active Vehicle Warnings) and the driver can also select four other active screens among seven other available screens.

On vehicles equipped wîth NissanConnectSM or NissanConnectSM wîth Navigation, the Advanced Drive-Assist™ display shows navigation destination turn-by-turn information, Pandora® song information and more.

Safety Shield Technologies
In addition to its many other functions, the Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display can be linked to three new available safety features – Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Moving Object Detection (MOD) – typically offered only on more upscale vehicles. It is the first time that LDW and MOD will be offered in the §egmènt. The three systems are part of the optional Technology Package, which also includes the NissanConnectSM wîth Navigation wîth 7.0-inch color touch-screen and §teering wheel navigation system controls. Thanks to the use of the systems' advanced, next-generation rearview camera, the BSW, LDW and MOD are integrated, intuitive and affordable.

The Blind Spot Warning System uses the rearview camera to scan the Altima's blind spots and alerts the driver if there is a vehicle in the zone. The driver is then alerted wîth audible and visual indicators. In the same way, the Lane Departure Warning system uses the rearview camera to monitor lane markings and alerts the driver if the vehicle unintentionally crosses these markers. Moving Object Detection detects moving objects, such as other vehicles, when the rearview camera is engaged when backing up and warns the driver wîth visual cues.

'Like so many other features on the new Altima, these Safety Shield Technologies are designed to help ease the anxieties of daily life. For example, parallel parking outside of school, the camera not only helps you see backwards, but also has moving guides that help you into tight spaces. At a busy shopping center, the camera can give you a 180-degree view side-to-side and the MOD system can help alert you to movement when backing out,' said Carolin.

'And getting on a freeway, A-pillar mounted light indicators, along wîth audible beeps, let you know if there's another vehicle in your blind spot. We're proud to offer these §egmènt-first technologies to Altima owners in keeping wîth the true spirit of ‘Innovation for All.' At Nissan, we believe these features should not be restricted to just premium vehicle buyers,' he continued.

Smart, Dynamic Performance
'Dynamic Performance, defined as excellent handling, driving confidence and driver excitement, has always been a part of Nissan's core values – from the early Datsun 510 sedan and 240Z sports car to today's 545-horsepower Nissan GT-R. Where the innovation comes in is in being able to offer fuel economy and responsive acceleration without compromising either,' said Carolin.

One key to achieving this modern one-two punch is found not in the drivetrain, but surrounding it – the new body design is about 80 pounds lighter than the previous body, which was already one of the lightest in the class. The new lighter and tighter body is achieved through increased use of high strength and ultra high strength steel, the addition of a larger front tower strut brace (as used in sports cars like the Nissan 370Z), and a new rear structural support built into the rear pass-through/parcel shelf.

As for the engines, a choice of two proven Altima powerplants – the 2.5-liter DOHC 4-cylinder and 3.5-liter DOHC V6 – are again offered for the new model year.

The 2.5-liter QR25 engine has been redesigned to be lighter and more efficient. It now includes variable valve timing on both exhaust and intake camshafts, and the new intake system opens the valves at a higher rpm to help keep the torque curve flat. Featuring cutting-edge technology such as a new thermoplastic resin intake manifold, this engine simultaneously produced more power despite being lighter. Horsepower has increased by seven to an estimated 182 hp (from 175 hp), while torque remains the same at 180 lb-ft (est.). The advanced, award-winning VQ35DE 3.5-liter V6 remains rated at 270 horsepower (est.) and 258 lb-ft of torque (est.).

Targeted Class-Leading Highway Fuel Economy
Helping increase fuel economy wîth both engines is the next-generation Xtronic CVT® (Continuously Variable Transmission). Nissan is an leader in CVT transmissions, wîth more than 20 years of experience in CVT design and engineering. For this next-generation design, a full 70 percent of the parts have been redesigned and internal friction reduced by up to 40 percent (versus the previous design). It also features new control logic and expanded gear ratio coverage, which helps reduce noise and fuel consumption while improving drivability and responsiveness.

'With fewer moving parts, less friction and less drivetrain shock to other parts, Altima's Xtronic CVT® offers better fuel economy, better acceleration and better durability versus a conventional automatic transmission,' said Carolin. 'It translates the driver's intentions in the most efficient way possible, maintaining the ‘right gear' for every situation – creating a highly rewarding driving experience.'

Targeted fuel economy for the Altima 2.5-liter 4-cylinder/CVT combination is 27 mpg city, 38 mpg highway and 31 mpg combined. Fuel economy for the 3.5-liter V6/CVT Altima is rated at 22 mpg city, 30 mpg highway and 25 mpg combined. Also contributing to the improved fuel efficiency are tires wîth reduced rolling resistance and a new regenerative alternator that only operates when the vehicle is coasting.

Dynamic Driving Performance
Building on Altima's reputation for superior dynamic performance, the 2013 Altima offers a redefined multi-link rear suspension benchmarked to leading European sports sedans.

The design features high lateral suspension stiffness, improved toe angle control (with the addition of new connect bushings) and improved camber angle control under load (for increased tire contact wîth the road when cornering) versus the previous generation Altima. The suspension also utilizes a new shock absorber design by ZF SACHS, similar to that used on high-end luxury sedans, to deliver stellar body control and response, while simultaneously delivering a plush, comfortable ride. The 2013 Altima's front suspension uses an independent front strut design. Stabilizer bars are utilized front and rear.

Also used for the first time on a Nissan vehicle and in the §egmènt is a new Active Úndersteer Control system, which utilizes intelligent control logic and high-response brake actuators to brake the inside front wheels during cornering (as required) to increase yaw-moment. Úsing the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC)/Traction Control System (TCS) as its base, Active Úndersteer Control is almost undetectable when it operates. It is designed primarily for everyday operation rather than emergency evasive maneuvers.

'Our target, which we think we've achieved, is to provide outstanding levels of handling and comfort. The more secure and responsive the suspension, the less stress the driver should feel in nearly every driving situation,' added Carolin.

Responsive §teering is provided by a new Electronic Hydraulic Power-Assisted Steering (EHPS) system that preserves the feel of hydraulic §teering rack while offering the efficiencies of an electric power §teering set-up.

Altima's 4-wheel power-assisted disc brake system was also re-engineered utilizing human ergonomic studies to optimize pedal travel and force, providing a premium blend of immediate response, confident braking and reduced fatigue. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) are standard.

A selection of wheels and tires are offered on the 2013 Altima, including 16-inch steel wheels wîth full covers and 215/60R16 all-season tires, or 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels wîth 215/55R17 V-rated all-season tires, on 2.5-liter models. New 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels wîth 235/45R18 V-rated all-season tires are standard on 3.5-liter V6-equipped models.

Details That Make a Difference
The team behind the development of the new fifth generation Altima didn't stop wîth the major components and systems – they also made numerous, almost imperceptible enhancements to nearly every aspect of the driving experience.

The headlights' automatic-on function, for example, offers an improved two-stage function. In lower light situations during the day, the headlights illuminate automatically – but the gauges remain in daylight mode. In late evening/night conditions, the headlights remain illuminated and the gauges revert to nighttime lighting.

In addition, many states now require the headlights to be illuminated in rainy conditions. In the all-new Altima, after four passes of the windshield wipers, the headlights turn on automatically. If the vehicle is turned off wîth the wipers in motion, instead of stopping mid-motion, they automatically complete a full cycle – so they don't get frozen to the windshield in icy or snowy conditions.

The team even paid extra attention to the armrests, equipping them wîth deep, plush padding in order to enhance comfort mile after mile.

The new Altima features the Easy Fill Tire Alert function, first introduced on the Nissan Quest, for the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). When filling the tires wîth air, the hazard lamps flash to let the operator know the system is working. When the correct pressure is reached, a beep of the horn provides notification. Únlike many competitive vehicles, Altima's individual tire pressure monitoring and readout system provides the tire pressure at each individual location and automatically adjusts positions when the tires are rotated during service. The information is integrated into the Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display,

Available from the SV grade is a factory-installed Remote Engine Start System, which allows the owner to heat or cool the vehicle from the comfort of the home. The Altima must be locked for the remote start to operate (up to 10 minutes). The Altima's remote start is the first offered wîth a Nissan vehicle.

The 2013 Altima offers a long list of standard safety features, including Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) wîth dual stage supplemental front air bags wîth seat belt sensors and an occupant classification sensor, front seat-mounted side impact supplemental air bags, and roof-mounted curtain supplemental side-impact air bags for front-and rear-seat occupant head protection.

Seven Well-Equipped Models
The all-new 2013 Nissan Altima is offered in four 2.5-liter engine equipped models, 2.5, 2.5 S, 2.5 SV and 2.5 SL, along wîth three 3.5-liter V6 equipped models, 3.5 S, 3.5 SV and 3.5 SL.

The Altima 2.5 S model includes 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat, Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display, §teering wheel-mounted audio controls, cruise control, Nissan Intelligent Key®, six speakers, auto on/off headlights, in-cabin microfilter, Tire Pressure Monitoring System wîth individual tire pressure readouts, and much more. Altima 3.5 S adds 18-inch wheels and tires, plus paddle shifters wîth manual mode.

When it comes to the innovations and advanced technology behind the ground-up, totally new 2013 Nissan Altima design, some things might be considered evolutionary. Following are closer looks at just a few of the individual components and systems that make the all-new fifth generation the most revolutionary Altima ever.

Body in White (and Seven Other Great Colors)

Proving that premium doesn't have to be pricey, the new Altima body takes a big step forward in creating a quiet, comfortable foundation for a new benchmark mid-size sedan. (concept carz) Keeping the same basic dimensions as the previous generation (because when things are right, keep them right), new attention to aerodynamic design helps give the totally restyled body a more premium appearance. More importantly, the new body-in-white features a new front tower strut brace like found on sports cars, and additional rear structural support built into the rear parcel shelf – enhancing structural rigidity and lateral handling response. At the same time, overall body weight has been reduced through utilizing aluminum hood and bumper reinforcements and expanded use of high-tensile steel. In addition, more than half the steel in the body is 'high strength steel.' Total vehicle weight has been reduced by around 80 pounds.

Since 'quiet feels quality,' the transmission of noise into the cabin has also been reduced through use of the more rigid body, and by intercepting and isolating noise before it enters the passenger compartment wîth reduced wind noise designs for the sideview mirrors and A-pillar moldings, and improved engine, exhaust and HVAC mounts.

The idea is to first 'seal' the cabin, then absorb noise inside through a significant increase in noise absorption materials in the roof, instrument panel and floor mats. This provides more of a sense of separation from the engine and creates better acoustics to enjoy conversation and the various audio sources and components.

The coefficient of drag has been reduced by five percent to 0.299 through smoothing airflow around the body, and adding six air deflectors and two large underbody panels. The 2013 Altima's exterior color palette has been selected to emphasize presence and quality feel. A new character color, Storm Blue, joins new Altima colors Cayenne Red, Pearl White and Java Metallic, and carryover colors Brilliant Silver, Saharan Stone, Metallic Slate and Super Black.

Redesigned 2.5-liter Engine wîth Improved Fuel Efficiency

Targeting best-in-class fuel economy*, estimated at 38 mpg highway, Altima's improved version of Nissan's proven QR25 engine sheds approximately 11 pounds while adding seven horsepower to 182 hp (est.). The design adds variable valve timing on both exhaust and intake camshafts, and the new intake system opens the valves at a higher rpm to help keep the torque curve flat. A full 70 percent of the parts have been redesigned, which along wîth a downsized oil pump, lower oil level and low viscosity oil results in up to 40 percent reduction in internal friction (versus the previous design).

The new CVT also features expanded gear ratio coverage, wîth a lower 1st gear and higher ratio overdrive. New control logic and expanded gear ratio coverage help reduce noise and fuel consumption while improving drivability and responsiveness. The new intelligent CVT logic also includes a Lift Foot Hold function that holds the gear ratio if the accelerator pedal is momentarily released and then reapplied, such as when merging onto a freeway; and a Brake Downshift function that 'downshifts' the transmission when braking is applied before entering a corner, so re-acceleration is enhanced when exiting the corner because the CVT is already in a lower gear ratio.

All V6-equipped 2013 Altima models utilize a chain drive (versus belt on 4-cylinder models) and standard paddle shifters that help mimic a step transmission (with seven simulated gear levels) when desired.

Along wîth greatly enhanced driver feel, the result of the new CVT redesign is an estimated 15+ percent improvement in fuel economy wîth the 4-cylinder engine and a 10 percent improvement wîth the V6 engine (versus 2012 Altima models).

Advanced Rear Multi-Link Suspension

As part of the desire to make the 2013 Altima the §egmènt leader in dynamic performance, a new multi-link rear suspension incorporating Active Úndersteer Control was developed. The new design starts wîth a new structure wîth enhanced stiffness, helping enhance stability, tracking and response to §teering inputs.

Refined toe angle control is achieved wîth the addition of new connect bushings, resulting in enhanced tire deformation compensation when cornering, and improved camber angle control under load helps increase tire contact wîth the road, also when cornering.

The suspension utilizes a new (to Altima) shock absorber design by ZF SACHS, which supplies many high-end European sports sedans. The shocks use state-of-the-art valve technology to help control wheel hop and harshness, while also helping create a smooth, flat ride. The result is reduced transmission of vibrations to the cabin, along wîth enhanced body control and response. The front suspension remains an independent front strut design and stabilizer bars are utilized front and rear.

The new Active Úndersteer Control system utilizes intelligent control logic and high-response brake actuators to brake the inside front wheels during cornering (as required) to increase yaw-moment using the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC)/Traction Control System (TCS) as its base. When a driver turns a front-wheel drive car in situations such as merging onto a freeway from a cloverleaf, the tendency is for the car to understeer. With Active Úndersteer Control, the Altima turns as the driver intends, making it easier for the driver – whether in dry, wet or snowy conditions. Active Úndersteer Control is almost undetectable when it operates. Active Úndersteer Control is designed primarily for everyday operation rather than emergency evasive maneuvers.

The Power (Steering) of Two
Altima's new Electronic Hydraulic Power-Assisted Steering (EHPS) system provides the best of two worlds – the natural, smooth feel of a sophisticated hydraulic power §teering system, while simultaneously improving fuel economy by using electric power (rather than drawing power from the engine). The hydraulic assist allows a greater reduction ratio than wîth gears, while the small electric motor, which runs directly off the 12-volt power supply (no converter) does not need to be mounted directly on the §teering rack since a large reduction ratio is obtained. In the desire to help reduce the fatigue experienced during long commutes or extended road trips, Nissan turned to seating and posture research from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Armrest, Smart Wipers and TPMS (Oh, My)

It has been 20 years since the first Nissan Altima rolled off the line in Smyrna. Today, more than 4.4 million Altimas later, Nissan celebrates another milestone: production of the top-selling vehicle's fifth generation.

The all-new 2013 Nissan Altima, which has been produced at Nissan's Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant since the first generation rolled off the line in 1992, is the first of five all-new Nissan vehicles coming in the next 15 months. The most innovative Altima yet, the fifth-generation model builds on its strong reputation for quality and reliability and adds new levels of innovation, fuel-efficiency, dynamic performance and premium style.

4.4 Million Altimas Later, Another First: All-New, 2013 Nissan Altima Begins Production in Tennessee

First Generation (1993-1997)The name 'Altima' originally referred to a trim line of the Nissan Laurel mid-size car sold in Central America and the Caribbean before 1992. In 1993, Nissan discontinued the Stanza line, replacing it wîth the Ú.S.-made Altima. The very first Altima rolled off the assembly line in Smyrna, Tenn., in June 1992, as a 1993 model. All Altimas were built in Smyrna until June 2004, when Nissan's Canton, Miss., plant began producing additional Altimas to meet high demand.

Initially, the car's official name was 'Stanza Altima.' 1993 models can be seen wîth a sticker reading 'Stanza' in small lettering to the left of the ALTIMA emblem on the trunk lid. Though the Stanza name was there more for regulatory compliance than a lack of confidence in renaming the middle vehicle in Nissan's longstanding Sentra-Stanza-Maxima three-sedan lineup, there were concerns at the time about the public's acceptance and ability to pronounce the new Altima name - enough that guidelines were distributed explaining the proper syllable emphasis. The concern was ill-founded, as Altima had an almost immediate impact on the mid-size sedan §egmènt, which at the time was dominated by the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.

All Altima models used Nissan's 150 hp straight-4 DOHC engine mated to a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. Suspension was composed of struts wîth stabilizer bars at both ends and was noted for providing sporty, satisfying handling. Trim lines consisted of the entry level XE, mid-line GXE, sporty SE, and luxury GLE.

The base XE (rare) had manual windows. The mid-line GXE had power windows, a power retracting antenna, pass thru rear armrest, digital clock in dash, and color matched plastic speaker grilles for the rear 6-inch speakers. The XE and GXE models only had the fixed intermittent wiper switch.

In addition to the GXE features, the SE had a stiffer suspension, fog lights, 3-leg mount rear spoiler, side skirts and sport seats (plus a standard sunroof in 1994-1995). It also had 4-wheel disc brakes, which came on the other trim lines when antilock brakes were ordered.

The GLE's enhancements included a digital head-up display (1993 and 1994 only), which displayed speed in mph or km/h, turn signals, and various warning lights on a unique mirrored patch made into the windshield. Other features included a coin holder built into the fuse panel cover (1993 and 1994 only), adjustable lumbar support on the front seats, automatic digital climate control, keyless entry wîth alarm (optional), floor mats, color matched side mirrors, cornering lights, sunroof, and a higher-powered six-speaker cassette/CD stereo which included 6X9 rear speakers wîth black metal 'active speaker' grilles. For 1997 it gave up all of the above in exchange for standard leather (previously optional). All SE and GLE models had alloy wheels and variable intermittent wipers.

The 1993 Altima came wîth a rosewood colored dash trim and only had a driver's side airbag coupled wîth automatic shoulder belts. The 1994 Altima gained a darker burl wood dash trim, a flush mount passenger airbag and regular seatbelts. The 1995 model year also brought a new venetian blind-like grille, new taillights (red and clear), and a new 2 leg mount spoiler wîth a red LED brake light for the SE. Nissan added new wheel covers for base models in 1996. In 1997 the GXE gained a new 'Limited Edition' package including alloy wheels, keyless entry, alarm, floor mats, and a Limited Edition sticker on each side near the front wheels. Second Generation 1998- 2001

The second generation Altima followed in 1998 and was produced through the 2001 model year. Once again designed in California and manufactured in Tennessee, it had more power (155 hp by 2000) and a more responsive driving feel. It also offered a much more comfortable interior, a higher quality feel and additional equipment options. For 2001, the first Limited Edition model was introduced, which would become an important part of Altima's value pricing strategy in the years that followed.

The second generation (chassis model L30) was an American market-only version, again styled by Nissan's California design center. A new interior brought a revised glove box and cup holders, a folding back seat (except on XE), and depowered airbags.

While total volume remained identical at 108 cubic feet (3.1 m3), most felt it was distributed better and resulted in a slightly roomier-feeling cabin.

Trim lines were the entry XE, volume-selling GXE, sporty SE, and luxury-trimmed GLE. The SE can be distinguished by its body-color grille, fog lights, rear spoiler, alloy wheels, and white-faced gauges. In this generation of Altima, all GLEs had leather seats standard.

The majority of changes came for the 2000 model year. The engine increased in power from 150 to 155 hp, while it also improved the 0-60 mph time from 8.7 to 8.4 seconds. The Altima grew slightly longer and got a deeper front grille, one-piece headlamps wîth turn signals, all-red taillights, and plastic trim on the decklid. Side airbags were newly standard on GLE and available on GXE and SE. For 2001, the Altima GXE again gained a Limited Edition package: power driver's seat, keyless entry wîth alarm and floor mats.

Third Generation 2002-2006

While the first two generations of Altima laid the foundation - and were very successful compared wîth the previous Nissan Stanza - the third generation really put Altima on the map and customer shopping lists.

It was the first mass-market product built on Nissan's new FF-L platform, which was unique to North America and had no equivalent model in Japan. It was produced in model years 2002 through 2006. This new design had up to 18-inch wheels and was the first Altima series to offer a 3.5-liter V6 in addition to its 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. The Altima grew substantially for this generation, as interior volume expanded to 118.8 cubic feet. The Altima's interior dimensions even surpassed that of the higher-end Maxima, so the 2004 Maxima moved more upscale into the full-size bracket. The new Altima also featured improved handling and more aggressive styling. Reviews were consistently strong by media and consumers alike as the Altima helped lead Nissan's product resurgence in the early part of the new century.

'The concept behind the third generation Altima styling and engineering was simple - stop copying Accord and Camry, as we had been doing, and carve out fresh territory of our own,' explained Nissan Sales and Marketing VP, Al Castignetti. 'We brought the 2002 Altima to market under the banner of 'The Cure for the Common Sedan,' letting people know that they could continue to blend in wîth the crowd, or stand out wîth Altima's more aggressive styling and driver-rewarding performance.' With this vehicle, Nissan found its own identity in the mid-size sedan §egmènt, which continues to drive its popularity today.

The 2002 Altima was named 'North American Car of the Year,' the first Asian nameplate to win the coveted award determined by a panel of 50 independent auto writers from the Únited States and Canada. It was also named 2002 'Best of the Year' by MotorWeek on PBS. And, for the first time the automotive media deemed that Altima was not only an alternative to the leading mid-size sedans, it was equal to or better than the longstanding sales leaders in the §egmènt.

The 2003-2004 models received two tone dash color, and the 3.5 SE received an upgrade in horsepower, from 240 hp to 245 hp though torque stayed the same at 246 pound-feet. The 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine launched the sedan from 0-60 mph in just 8.6 seconds, more than competitive to those in its class.

For 2005-2006 the Altima received a facelift, including a new front grille, all-red taillights, redesigned interior, and an optional DVD-based navigation system. The V6 was now rated at 250 hp wîth torque rated at 249 pound-feet, wîth a 0-60 mph time in just 5.9 seconds utilizing the Xtronic 5-speed transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) Also new was the SE-R model wîth a 260 hp and 251 lb ft of torque version of the V6, a 6-speed manual transmission (automatic still optional), upgraded brakes, 18-inch wheels, a sport suspension and a high-flow exhaust. Topspeed.com recorded a 0-60 mph time of 5.7 seconds for the SE-R.

The third-generation Altima was well-received by the press, wîth many critics praising the new style and extra space, and calling it one of the most powerful and best-handling family sedans available.

Fourth Generation: 2006 - 2012

The fourth generation Nissan Altima was announced at the 2006 New York Auto Show on April 12, 2006. It is the first vehicle to use the smaller Nissan D platform, wîth a new front and upgraded rear suspension. The wheelbase is 1-inch shorter than the third generation Altima, but interior space is mostly unchanged. The Maxima and Murano also used this new platform starting wîth the 2009 models.

The 2007 Nissan Altima used revised versions of the engines from the third generation model. The 3.5 L V6 engine produced 270 hp and the 2.5 L straight-4 produced 175 hp. A 6-speed manual was standard, and a continuously variable transmission replaced the traditional automatic as the optional transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)

The 2007 Altima sported some more recent innovations in the market, including, but not limited to, standard 'push-button start' (Called 'Intelligent Key'), Bluetooth capability for cell phones, and a parking camera. The dashboard has larger buttons for easy readability and a total of nine cup holders. For 2008, all Altima models received ABS wîth electronic brake-force distribution.

For the 2010 model year, the Nissan Altima was face lifted wîth a new front fascia, hood, and headlights, as well as new wheels and interior materials. Electronic stability control, previously only offered as part of an option package on V6 models and unavailable wîth 4-cylinder engines, was now standard on all Altima trims.

New Coupe and Hybrid Models Join the Lineup

The fourth and current generation Altima design (2007 to present) has far outpaced all of its predecessors, offering more of just about everything - including the addition of a dramatic new Altima Coupe for the 2008 model year. Únlike most coupe models in the class, which merely took their sedan model and removed the rear doors, the Altima Coupe featured unique bodywork from the A-pillar back and was designed inside, out and underneath to offer a more sporty style and performance to match the desires of 2-door Altima buyers.

An Altima Sedan Hybrid was introduced in 2007 and continued through 2011, wîth availability limited to a small number of states. The Altima Hybrid powertrain mated a specialized version of Nissan's QR25 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and standard electronically controlled CVT wîth an advanced electric drive motor/generator. This combination increased fuel economy while maintaining low tailpipe emissions.

In 2012, Altima continues to provide an innovative, standard-setting combination of quality, exhilarating performance, sporty appearance and exceptional value in the mid-size sedan class. Its design is still highly distinctive, and it still offers excellent driving dynamics wîth competitive fuel economy - all at a great price value.
