The Goggomobile was launched in 1955 and was named after the owner's grandson Goggo Glex. The Goggomobil was produced by Hans Glas in Germany, who recognized a market for small, inexpensive cars in postwar Germany. They were bought out by BMW in 1966 and production finally ended in 1969. More than 280,000 were built in all in various chassis and body combinations to suite a variety of needs.
Australia had a similar need for such vehicles, but taxes and duties made direct import of the Goggomobil difficult to justify. Bill Buckle was the owner of Buckle Motors Pty, Ltd. in Sydney and was awarded with distribution rights for Australia. He was able to figure a way around the economic restrictions by importing the Goggomobil as a bare chassis and installing his own bodies once they arrived in Australia. Thus, the rear-engine, rear-wheel drive Goggomobil Dart was born, and the finished product weighed in at 761 pounds. They had a small luggage compartment built into the nose.
Only 700 examples of the Goggomobil Dark were produced.
