The new Mercedes-Benz GL 63 AMG - First class: the perfect blend of style and performance

Luxury and refinement, striking design, maximum safety and the dynamism so typical of the brand: the new high-performance SÚV, the GL 63 AMG, combines compelling technologies wîth an extensive range of standard equipment and pure ride comfort for up to seven passengers. Effortless superiority comes courtesy of the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine, which develops a peak output of 410 kW (557 hp) and maximum torque of 760 Nm. The AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension wîth ACTIVE CÚRVE SYSTEM roll stabilisation provides high-level driving dynamics and the comfort one would expect from the Mercedes brand.

In addition to the ML 63 AMG all-rounder and the recently unveiled, characterful G 63 AMG and G 65 AMG models, the GL 63 AMG places particular emphasis on dynamism and style. 'Creating the perfect basis for characteristic AMG performance and a superior driving experience: the AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine. A look at the technical data provides some powerful arguments. Peak output of 410 kW (557 hp) and maximum torque of 760 Nm result in first-class performance. The GL 63 AMG manages the 0 to 100 km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds and its top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited). NEDC fuel consumption comes in at 12.3 litres per 100 kilometres (288 g CO2/km).

The AMG M 157 eight-cylinder engine features an innovative, high-tech power package including spray-guided direct petrol injection, piezo injectors, biturbo charging, air/water intercooling, all-aluminium crankcase, a four-valve-per-cylinder design wîth variable camshaft adjustment, plus alternator management and the ECO start/stop system.

Power is transmitted to all four permanently driven wheels by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLÚS 7G-TRONIC. Featuring three modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting, this seven-speed automatic transmission offers a fascinatingly broad scope of variability. In 'Controlled Efficiency' (C) mode the ECO start/stop function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine as soon as the vehicle comes to a standstill. 'C' also stands for a gentle accelerator and transmission characteristic wîth early gear changes; start-up generally takes place in second gear here. A green 'ECO' symbol in the AMG instrument cluster indicates to the driver that the ECO start/stop function is active.

In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) driving programmes the ECO start/stop function is inactive and the engine-transmission combination displays far greater agility wîth more spontaneous responses. A brief and exactly defined retardation of ignition and injection during upshifting at full load additionally provides for shorter shift times and an acoustic experience.

Enhanced efficiency and driving dynamics

To enhance efficiency, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLÚS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission incorporates a fuel-economy converter wîth centrifugal pendulum, bearings designed for reduced friction loss and a transmission-oil thermal management system. Friction loss-minimised axle gears, electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports §teering, an optimised belt drive, and demand-responsive control of all ancillary units and pumps also help to reduce fuel consumption.

Mercedes-AMG deploys a specially designed transfer case for the 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive, which distributes the drive power to the front and rear axle at a ratio of 40:60 in the interests of dynamic handling. As if that were not enough, the AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension wîth AIRMATIC package – consisting of air suspension, special damper struts, automatic level control and Adaptive Damping System (ADS) – is combined wîth the ACTIVE CÚRVE SYSTEM for active roll stabilisation. This system, which comes as standard and is specific to AMG, employs active anti-roll bars on the front and rear axles to reduce the body's roll angle during cornering. Apart from enhanced agility and driving pleasure, the ACTIVE CÚRVE SYSTEM has the additional effect of increasing handling stability and therefore safety, particularly at higher speeds.

Roll stabilisation, damping and suspension adapt automatically to the prevailing driving situation, offering both optimum ride comfort and maximum stability. The GL 63 AMG driver is able to choose at the push of a button between the three suspension modes 'Comfort', 'Sport' and 'Sport plus'. The fully load-bearing air suspension system is speed-sensitive, lowering the body at higher speeds in order to minimise drag while increasing driving stability.

The AMG-specific elastokinematics at the front axle and the more robustly designed rear axle stabiliser bar are responsible for improved §teering precision. The enhanced drive train delivers the best possible power transmission and hallmark Mercedes reliability. The 4ETS electronic traction control system which features as standard provides for optimised grip when friction coefficients vary.

AMG speed-sensitive sports §teering, AMG high-performance braking system

Electromechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports §teering features variable power assistance which responds in accordance wîth the chosen suspension mode. It also helps to save fuel, as the §teering assist function only requires energy when the driver actually moves the §teering wheel. The GL 63 AMG comes as standard wîth 5-spoke light-alloy wheels in format 10 x 21, painted titanium grey and wîth a high-sheen finish, fitted wîth tyres in size 295/40 R 21. The AMG high-performance braking system provides for the shortest possible braking distances and high fade resistance wîth ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round in size 390 x 36 millimetres (front) and 345 x 26 millimetres (rear).

Performance-oriented design wîth masculine features

Striking, masculine, unmistakeable: these attributes describe the design of the GL 63 AMG. Mercedes-AMG has enhanced the main stylistic features of the new GL – powerful dynamism and sporty elegance – using specific elements that emphasise the top V8 model's exceptional performance. The typically upright GL radiator grille wîth its central Mercedes star is adorned wîth high-gloss slats painted in black. AMG styling elements include the front apron wîth its large openings that ensure an effective air flow for the cooling modules. The bottom air intake takes the form of a typical AMG stylised 'A' wîth a gap under the fine black fin through which air can flow optimally to the cooling modules – the perfect blend of design and high-tech. The trim insert in matt silver chrome installed under it creates a sense of width and coordinates optimally wîth the borders of the LED daytime running lamps in the side air openings.

The AMG front apron elegantly merges into the exclusive wheel-arch flaring. In order to accommodate the large 53.3 cm (21-inch) AMG light-alloy wheels wîth the wide-base 295 tyres, the flaring widens the vehicle by 22 millimetres on each side. From the side, observers will notice the V8 BITÚRBO logos on the wings and illuminated running boards wîth an aluminium finish. The rear wheel-arch flaring blends into the AMG rear apron which is again adorned wîth a striking trim insert in matt silver chrome and the suggestion of black air openings. Creating both a visual and acoustic highlight are the two chrome-plated, exposed twin tailpipes of the AMG sports exhaust system.

Exclusivity and dynamism dominate in the interior

Great attention to detail, excellent ergonomics and a generous amount of space available – exclusivity and dynamism also dominate in the interior of the GL 63 AMG. All seven seats in the high-performance SÚV are covered in high-quality leather, as is the centre armrest. Electrically adjustable AMG sports seats feature double topstitching in a contrasting colour and AMG badges on the front seat backrests and outer rear seat backrests. The dashboard, armrests and door panelling come in ARTICO man-made leather wîth double topstitching. As part of the optional designo Exclusive package, these components can be covered in high-quality designo leather.

The AMG Performance 4-spoke §teering wheel wîth perforated leather in the grip area, flattened bottom section on the §teering wheel rim and aluminium shift paddles ensures optimal vehicle control. Four round instruments on the AMG instrument cluster provide the driver wîth information. The central colour TFT monitor incorporates the AMG welcome logo and AMG main menu.

Just in time for today's Los Angeles Auto Show press day, pricing and model info are available for the SLS AMG GT and GL63 AMG, which are making their Ú.S. Auto show debuts in addition to the world debuts of the SLS AMG Black Series (pricing TBA) and Vision Ener-G-Force concept vehicle.

The SLS AMG GT Coupe and Roadster deliver stratospheric levels of performance without compromise. SLS AMG GT will arrive at Ú.S. Mercedes-Benz dealers by the end of 2012.

Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG Sport Utility Makes North American Debut at L.A. Auto Show

The high-performance GL63 AMG sport utility is making its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, open to the public from November 30 to December 9, 2012 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The latest model to join the award-winning newgeneration GL-Class family, the 2013 GL63 AMG features a 5.5-liter biturbo V8 engine that produces a breath-taking 550 horsepower and 560 lb.-ft of torque and a raised top speed of 174mph as well as an AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLÚS 7G-TRONIC transmission wîth the highefficiency ECO start/stop system.

The 2013 GL63 AMG features all the standard equipment of the generously-equipped GL550 as well as standard Driver Assistance Package, Panorama roof, designo interior and surround view camera. The GL63 AMG will start at $116,925 (excluding D&D) and goes on-sale during the first quarter of 2013.

Standard AMG RIDE CONTROL sports suspension wîth AIRMATIC – air suspension, automatic level control and special shock absorber struts wîth ADS adaptive damping – works wîth an ACTIVE CÚRVE SYSTEM that provides active stabilization of body lean. This AMG-designed system uses active front and rear stabilizer bars to reduce body lean during cornering.

The new GL63 boasts a special transfer case for the 4MATIC full-time four-wheel-drive system that distributes engine power 40:60 to the front and rear wheels. This rear-biased torque distribution helps provide the SÚV wîth sports car handling as well as impressive allweather traction.

The GL63 AMG driver can choose between two suspension modes at the push of a button – Comfort or Sport. AMG electro-mechanical speed-sensitive §teering features variable power assist, depending on the suspension setting. The new §teering also helps save fuel, because it uses energy only when the §teering wheel is being turned. In addition, the air suspension automatically lowers the body at higher speeds or when in Sport mode to improve aerodynamics and driving stability.

A Distinctive AMG Look


The GL63 AMG is fitted wîth flared fenders that increase body width by nearly two inches, which make room for 21-inch AMG alloy wheels shod wîth tires that are nearly 12 inches wide. Its special front apron features large air intakes and a border of LED daytime running lights in the side air intakes. Matte silver trim along the lower fascia and a gloss black grille complete the new look. 'V8 BITÚRBO' badges are mounted on the front fenders, and aluminum-finish running boards under the doors are illuminated. The rear fender flares blend into an AMG rear apron which incorporates eye-catching matte silver chrome trim and two pairs of sport exhaust outlets.

In addition to AMG RIDE CONTROL, AIRMATIC, and the ACTIVE CÚRVE SYSTEM, standard safety equipment on the GL63 AMG includes ATTENTION ASSIST, Crosswind Stabilization, a 360-degree camera system and Bi-xenon headlights. Other standard equipment includes KEYLESS-GO, panorama sunroof, power EASY-ENTRY for the rear seats and a power tailgate.

The 2013 GL Lineup


The new high-performance GL63 AMG joins an award-winning GL-Class line of full-size sport utilities that also features the fuel-sipping GL350 BlueTEC (240 hp, 455 lb.-ft.) wîth a V6 turbodiesel. Between these two contrasting models are the popular GL450 (362 hp, 406 lb.- ft.) and GL550 (429 hp, 516 lb.-ft.), both equipped wîth new direct injection biturbo V8 engines.

Electromechanical Rack-And-Pinion Steering


All four GL models come wîth new electrically-assisted rack-and-pinion §teering. Not only does the electric §teering provide built-in speed-dependent power assist, but it also offers fuel savings. The engine no longer has to turn a hydraulic power §teering pump, and the new §teering only uses electrical power when the wheel is being turned. Mounted ahead of the front wheel center, the §teering gear unit has a variable mechanical ratio that operates more directly, or slightly faster, in the center position, which enhances agility and handling.

Active Parking Assist wîth Surround View Camera


The electric §teering assist also makes other innovative systems possible, such as Active Parking Assist (standard on the GL63 AMG and GL550, optional on other GL models), which makes parallel parking a stress-free cinch. Below about 20 mph, a 'P' icon appears in the dash to show that an electronic search for a parking space is active, and whenever an adequate-size parking space is found, an arrow appears next to the 'P' icon. When reverse is engaged and the driver confirms Active Parking Assist is desired, the system initiates automatic §teering as the driver controls acceleration and braking at speeds below seven
mph.

ACTIVE CÚRVE SYSTEM


Standard on the GL63 AMG and optional on other GL models, the ACTIVE CÚRVE SYSTEM (not to be confused wîth Active Curve Illumination) is a semi-active suspension that uses electronic sensors, an engine-driven hydraulic pump and electronically controlled hydraulic valves to reduce body lean. Instead of conventional torsional stabilizer bars at the front and rear, the stabilizer bars in the ACTIVE CÚRVE SYSTEM are essentially split in the center and connected to rotary hydraulic actuators.

Whenever the vehicle is in a curve, the actuators counteract lateral pitching, reducing the natural tendency of the body to roll and lean in curves. Lower side forces means increased stability and driving pleasure, especially at high speeds, as well as less shifting of occupants.

ATTENTION ASSIST Cautions 'Time For A Rest?'



Among the many life-saving features on the GL-Class is the innovative ATTENTION ASSIST system that can alert the driver to the first signs of drowsiness, a factor that causes more than 100,000 accidents a year in the Ú.S. A §teering sensor is coupled to smart software that uses 70 parameters to establish a unique driver profile during the first 20 minutes of driving. Between 50 and 112 mph, the system identifies the erratic §teering corrections drivers make as they begin to get drowsy and triggers an audible warning, and a 'Time for a Rest?' message wîth a coffee cup icon appears in the instrument cluster.

More Safety Systems Assist the Driver


Other examples of trailblazing safety innovations include: Active Lane Keeping Assist, which alerts the driver by simulating rumble strip vibration in the §teering wheel if the car drifts from its lane without the turn signals on. It operates at speeds above 37 mph via a system that recognizes lane markings, thanks to a small camera in the windshield and a computer that analyzes the video images. Active Lane Keeping Assist incorporates an intervention feature, in which ESP braking automatically helps correct the car's course if the driver doesn't heed the initial warning.

Active Blind Spot Assist monitors both blind spots behind and to the side of the vehicle. Whenever a turn signal is activated wîth a vehicle in the blind spot, the driver gets visual and audible warnings. Active Blind Spot Assist also incorporates the ESP intervention feature, which automatically helps correct the car's course if the driver doesn't heed the initial warning.

PRE-SAFE® Gives The GL-Class Reflexes to Protect Occupants


Standard on the new GL, PRE-SAFE® is a revolutionary safety system that can actually sense an impending collision before it happens and take measures to protect occupants during those valuable seconds before impact. The PRE-SAFE system automatically tightens the front seat belts before a possible impact, and, on some models, the front passenger seat moves to a position that can provide better protection. Side windows close to provide better support for the curtain air bags, and if the system senses an impending rollover, the sunroof also closes.

The Mercedes-Benz Alabama Plant


Along wîth the M-Class, the GL-Class sport utility vehicle is produced at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, which began production in 1997 wîth the first-generation M-Class. The facility is in the midst of a $2.4 billion expansion to prepare for future products. Starting in 2014, the Tuscaloosa plant will also produce the successor generation of the current C-Class for the North American market.
