The Mercedes-Benz 200, also known as the W21, was derived from its predecessor, the 170. The car made its debut at the Paris Auto Salon and was intended as a medium-price market, medium-size vehicle.

The Type 170 was introduced in 1931 and was the first Mercedes-Benz to have an independently sprung suspension. This advancement was from technical chief Hans Nibel who was an export on springing and suspension.

This Type 200 example was from Czechoslovakia, where it was registered from December 8th of 1948 until 1981. It was then purchased by a Mr. Held of Darmstadt, who restored the car in total and drove it beginning in 1983. A mechanical restoration was later carried out by Classic Car Centre in Stuttgart and Motorentechnik Braun in 2009, in the previous owner's care. The car has the optional Sonnenschein ('sunshine' in German) soft top sunroof, providing open air access to all four occupants. The car is finished in red and black over grey seats.

Power comes from a 1949cc four-cylinder engine offering 40 horsepower. There is a three-speed manual transmission with overdrive and hydraulic drum brakes.

In 2012, this car was offered for sale at the Monaco sale presented by RM Auctions. The car was estimated to sell for €25.000-€30.000 and offered without reserve. As bidding came to a close, the car had been sold for the sum of €28.000 inclusive of buyer's premium.

1958 German Grand Prix: So Close Never Felt So Good!
On the 19th of July, at the 11th RAC British Grand Prix, Roy Salvadori would climb to the 3rd step on the podium. It would be the greatest result of his career in Formula One and it would be a most exuberant moment for the man from Dovercourt joining two other Brits on the podium of their home grand prix. However, it would be the race just two weeks later that would provide Salvadori with one of his greatest, and most disappointing, moments in Formula One. Salvadori's World Championship debut...[Read more...]
