The Hesketh 308E was designed by Frank Dernie and Nigel Stroud and was the last car built by the Hesketh team before it folded at the end of the 1978 season. The 308E raced during the 1977 season and participated in 18 races. Sponsorship support was provided by Penthouse and Rizla. Livery was of a scantily-clad Penthouse Pet embracing a Rizla packet. Powering the 308E was a Ford-Cosworth DFV V8 engine mounted mid-ship and mated to a Hewland FGA400 five-speed manual gearbox. It rested in an aluminum monocoque setup and was suspended in place by a double wishbone suspension setup with coil-over springs and dampers. During the 1977 season, Rupert Keegan qualified the car in every race entered. The best finish was a seventh-place finish at the Austrian Grand Prix.
After Hesketh's withdrawal from Formula One competition, the remaining 308Es campaigned with various competitors in the British Aurora AFX Championship.

For the 1978 season, sponsorship was from the less controversial sponsorship of Olympus Corporation.
