Ford Focus Electric Becomes America's Most Fuel-Efficient Five-Passenger Vehicle with 110 MPGe EPA Rating

•Ú.S. Environmental Protection Agency certifies the 2012 Ford Focus Electric as America's most fuel-efficient five-passenger vehicle wîth a 110 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) city rating
•Focus Electric achieves a combined rating of 105 MPGe, topping Nissan Leaf by 6 MPGe while also offering more motor power, passenger room and standard features
•Customers can make more use of this efficiency wîth Ford's faster charging technology that can recharge Focus Electric in about half the time of Nissan Leaf
•Ford gives customers the power of choice wîth 10 fuel-efficiency leaders across §egmènts and powertrain technologies

Ford's all-new Focus Electric is now officially America's most fuel-efficient five-passenger car wîth a certified 110 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) city rating and 99 MPGe on the highway.

Focus Electric also has been certified by the EPA to offer 105 MPGe combined, beating Nissan Leaf by 6 MPGe while offering more motor power and more standard features. Focus Electric's 99 MPGe highway certification bests the 92 MPGe rating for the Leaf.

Focus Electric bests Nissan Leaf in other ways, too – more passenger room and a faster charging system that allows for a full recharge in nearly half the time of Nissan Leaf.

The Focus line soon will be joined by the new 2013 Ford Fusion – aiming to be America's most fuel-efficient gas- and hybrid-powered midsize sedans – to help create one of the 's most fuel-efficient car lineups. The Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid is projected to become the world's most fuel-efficient midsize sedan by achieving more than 100 MPGe in electric mode.

'Ford is giving customers the power of choice for leading fuel economy regardless of what type of vehicle or powertrain technology they choose,' said Eric Kuehn, chief nameplate engineer, Focus Electric. 'The Focus and Fusion are great examples of how we transformed our fleet of cars, utilities and trucks wîth leading fuel efficiency.'

The EPA-approved Focus Electric label also certifies that the car has a range of 76 miles on a single charge compared wîth the 73-mile range of the Leaf. The Focus Electric can be driven up to 100 miles on a single charge depending on driving habits. The average driver drives 29 miles a day, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics website.

The approved label also will say customers could save $9,700 in fuel costs over the course of five years compared wîth the average new vehicle. Comparative savings could go even higher if the current trend of rising gas prices continues. In California alone, the cost for a gallon of gas rose 20 cents in a seven-day period that ended last week.

Fuel-efficiency champs

Focus Electric is the flagship of Ford's transformed lineup that features 10 vehicles wîth leading fuel economy. Ford's other fuel-efficiency leaders include:

•2013 Fusion 1.6-liter EcoBoost: Projected 37 mpg highway that would make it America's most fuel-efficient non-rechargeable midsize sedan
•2013 Escape 1.6-liter EcoBoost: Expected to be the most fuel-efficient crossover of its kind wîth 33 mpg highway
•2013 Taurus 2.0-liter EcoBoost: Expected to deliver best-in-class 31 mpg highway
•2012 Edge 2.0-liter EcoBoost: Delivers 30 mpg highway, besting all SÚVs its size or larger and even some cars such as the Honda Civic Si
•2012 Explorer 2.0-liter EcoBoost: One of the most fuel-efficient seven-passenger SÚVs on the market, delivering 28 mpg highway
•2013 Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid: Aiming to become the world's most fuel-efficient midsize sedan wîth a projected 100 MPGe rating
•2013 Fusion Hybrid: Expected to become the world's most fuel-efficient non-rechargeable midsize sedan wîth 47 mpg
•2012 Fiesta: Offers up to 40 mpg highway and class-leading 33 mpg combined rating
•2012 F-150: The most fuel-efficient full-size pickup, wîth V6 models delivering best-in-class 23 mpg highway and 17 mpg city

'We've been working for three years to make the Focus Electric America's most fuel-efficient vehicle of its kind,' said Chuck Gray, Ford chief engineer of Global Core Engineering Hybrid and Electric Vehicles. 'The entire group feels like a sports team that has just won a major championship. It's a good feeling to be at this point now.'

Únlike competitors that have designed electric and hybrid vehicles from scratch, Focus Electric benefits from being based on the fuel version of Ford's global C-§egmènt car.

'Focus Electric shares many of the same premium components and features as its gasoline-powered counterpart while delivering distinct efficiencies and a uniquely exciting driving experience,' said Kuehn.

In addition to boosting quality, Ford's strategic decision to electrify vehicle platforms – instead of creating one-off vehicles – allows the company to offer customers more choices as part of its fuel-efficient product lineup.

Vital Stats
Engine : 2.0 L., 4-cylinder
Power: 160 hp
Torque: 146 ft-lbs

5-speed Manual, 6-speed Automatic
Elec-tech

Focus Electric features an advanced charging system that allows the car's battery to fully recharge in four hours – nearly half the time of Nissan Leaf – using available 240-volt outlets that can be installed in residential garages.

Faster charging wîth 240 volts also can extend range as drivers can more quickly recharge between stops – up to 20 miles per charge hour – so they can significantly improve a car's range during a busy day of driving by recharging multiple times.

For those who need to charge up while away from home, the number of charging stations continues to rise. In the last 10 months the number of charging stations in the Únited States has risen from 750 to 5,507, according to the Ú.S. Department of Energy.

To cut charging costs at home, a unique value charging feature powered by Microsoft is designed to help owners in the Ú.S. charge their vehicles at the cheapest utility rates, which can make charging the Focus Electric less costly than charging the Nissan Leaf.

Other standard features on Focus Electric include Ford's Rear View Camera System, MyKey®, rain-sensing windshield wipers and Reverse Sensing System.

Tech sharing

Many of the technologies in Focus Electric are shared across Ford's electrified vehicle lineup. Some of the shared or soon-to-be-shared features include:

•SYNC® wîth MyFord Touch® offers multiple ways – including voice commands – for customers to manage and control their phone, navigation, entertainment and climate functions. Plug-in hybrids and all-electric models have additional options for monitoring information like battery state of charge
•MyFord Mobile enables access via smartphone or Web-based interface to perform key tasks, such as monitoring a vehicle's state of charge and current range or locating charge stations and planning routes to find them
•SmartGauge® wîth EcoGuide provides instantaneous fuel economy so drivers can adjust driving behavior accordingly if needed
•Regenerative braking captures and reuses more than 95 percent of the braking energy normally lost during the braking process
•Hybrid transmission, designed by Ford engineers in-house, is capable of operating at high speeds and in a smooth, fuel-efficient manner at the same time
•Lithium-ion batteries – the lithium-ion battery pack in Focus Electric is covered by an eight-year/100,000-mile component warranty
•Charge port (for electric and plug-in vehicles), conveniently located on the driver's side and near the front of the car, activates a light ring that illuminates the port twice when plugged in. The light ring then illuminates in quadrants as the car charges. Each quadrant represents 25 percent of the maximum battery charge
•Recycled fiber made from 100 percent post-consumer and post-industrial content is used in the seat fabric wîth the equivalent of 22 plastic, 16-ounce water bottles in each car

Production of the Focus Electric began in December 2011 at Ford's Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Mich. More information about MAP can be found here.

Ford will ramp up Focus Electric retail production in the first half of 2012 for dealership availability in California, New York and New Jersey. By the end of 2012, Focus Electric will be available in 19 markets across the Ú.S.

Ford Focus Electric Costars with Celebrities in ‘Plugged In,' Yahoo!'s First Reality Competition Series Launching May 29

•The program will debut May 29, reaching millions of viewers through Yahoo!'s video destination – Yahoo! Screen – to promote the new Focus Electric, America's most fuel-efficient five-passenger car
•Featuring celebrity hosts – David Arquette, Adrian Grenier, Jenna Bush Hager, Emily Procter, Alicia Silverstone, J.R. Martinez and more
•All-new Focus Electric – Ford's first all-electric, gas-free passenger car – plays a starring role in an exciting reality competition where the audience will ride along through some of America's most interesting cities

Yahoo!, the premier digital company, and Ford are releasing today a teaser video previewing 'Plugged In,' a weekly online reality competition show coinciding wîth the launch of the all-new 2012 Focus Electric and airing exclusively on Yahoo! Screen, the company's video destination.

Plugged In features two-person teams competing against each other in a series of challenges. The series begins May 29 wîth actor David Arquette guiding contestants through challenges at some of his favorite Los Angeles locales. Subsequent episodes will feature different celebrities taking contestants and viewers on an intimate tour of their respective hometowns, discovering hidden cultural gems and 'best of' locations in their city.

The winning teams in each city will move on to participate in the finale event in Los Angeles, where they will compete wîth teams from other regions for the chance to win a Ford Focus Electric. The series will crown a winning team in a finale episode on Aug. 7.

'Ford is launching the Focus Electric only on Yahoo!, once again recognizing the power and reach of the Web as we continue to rely more on the power of digital media,' says Matt VanDyke, director, Ú.S. Marketing Communications for Ford. 'The electric vehicle market will grow over time, so we electrified our popular small-car platform rather than creating a one-off vehicle, and now we can use a targeted online campaign instead of a big-budget advertisement.'

Focus Electric plays a prominent role in the competition as the car's SYNC® wîth MyFord Touch® system will be used by each team to receive video, text and audio clues. The car's navigation capabilities will help teams get from point to point, while hands-free calling will be used when the contest requires teams to make calls.

With 61 million unique visitors per month* who come to Yahoo! to watch video and 21 of the top original online video programs**, Yahoo! sets the bar for best-in-class original video programming.

With its recently launched video destination, Yahoo! Screen, the development of women's and comedy slates, and collaborations wîth world-class storytellers, creative partners and original voices, Yahoo! continues to build on its leadership position in video and to provide consumers and advertisers wîth the best premium content online.

'With at least eight out of 10 Internet users now watching online video, this is the perfect time for Yahoo! and Ford to launch Plugged In,' said Erin McPherson, vice president and head of video at Yahoo!. 'We know from our insights and data that our audience is passionate about celebrity-related content and travel content, and we combined those insights wîth Ford's brand goals for a truly engaging program.'

'I am excited to be a part of Plugged In on Yahoo! and take viewers to some of my favorite spots in Los Angeles,' said David Arquette.

'I am excited to be an ambassador for one of the best cities in the world, and my hometown, New York City,' said Adrian Grenier. 'There are so many amazing things going on here. People are engaged and you can feel the creativity all around you. There is never a false moment. People live fully and well and are starting to really embrace clean healthy living. There is a real sense of belonging and community.'

FORD FOCUS EARNS TOP SAFETY RATING FROM NHTSA

•The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded the 2013 Ford Focus its top safety rating, a five-star Overall Vehicle Score in its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP)
•The Focus was designed to wîth safety in mind wîth its next-generation airbags and AdvanceTrac® wîth electronic stability control
•The driver's side airbag uses a specially designed curve-shaped tether system that pulls in the lower section to create a 'pocket' to help lessen the impact of the airbag on the driver's chest and ribs in frontal crashes

DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 23, 2012 – The 2013 Ford Focus received a top safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Focus earned a five-star Overall Vehicle Score in NHTSA's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) testing, which combines vehicle performance in frontal and side-impact crash tests and a resistance to rollover evaluation.

'The new Focus is another example of Ford's commitment to safety and NHTSA's NCAP program has recognized this fact,' said Steve Kenner, global director of the Automotive Safety Office. 'The Focus is built wîth technologies from bumper to bumper to help reduce occupant injury risk when a crash is unavoidable.'

Focus was designed wîth next-generation front and side airbag technologies to tailor deployment to individual occupants. Focus also includes §egmènt-exclusive Safety Canopy® curtain airbags.

The driver's airbag uses a specially designed curve-shaped tether system that pulls in the lower section to create a 'pocket' to help lessen the impact of the airbag on the driver's chest and ribs in frontal crashes. Innovative seat mounted side airbags feature unique shoulder vents which are designed to line up wîth the shoulder area of a larger occupant keeping the side airbag from venting. On smaller passengers, the effect is just the opposite because the occupant's shoulder is below the vent, the gas vents out of the airbag.

The following safety and driver assist technologies are available on the 2013 Ford Focus:

•AdvanceTrac® wîth electronic stability control helps the vehicle maintain its intended path by measuring side-to-side yaw (or skidding), by monitoring the vehicle's speed, throttle position and §teering wheel angle, and when wheel slip is sensed, reduces engine torque and applies selected brakes;
•Ford SYNC®, co-developed wîth Microsoft and using Nuance Communications voice recognition technology, allows customers to bring digital media players and Bluetooth®-enabled mobile phones into their vehicles and operate the devices via voice commands or wîth the §teering wheel's supplemental audio controls;
•MyKey® allows parents to program any key through the vehicle message center to limit the volume on the stereo, top speed, block incoming phone calls and texts and make sure a child is buckled up before using the audio system; and
•Active park assist uses an ultrasonic-based sensing system and electric power-assisted §teering (EPAS) to position the vehicle for parallel parking, calculate the optimal §teering angle and quickly steer the vehicle into a parking spot.

The 2013 Ford Focus Electric earned a top vehicle safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Focus Electric, Ford's first all-electric passenger vehicle, earned a five-star Overall Vehicle Score in NHTSA New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) testing, which combines vehicle performance in frontal and side-impact crash tests and resistance to rollover.

'As more people shop for electrified vehicles, the Focus Electric now offers both a top vehicle safety rating from NHTSA and a faster-charging technology that allows it to fully recharge in three to four hours,' said Steve Kenner, global director of the Ford Automotive Safety Office.

Focus Electric features front and side airbag technologies to tailor deployment to individual occupants. The driver's airbag uses a reconfigured curve-shaped tether system that pulls in the lower section to create a 'pocket' to help lessen the impact of the airbag on the driver's chest and ribs in frontal crashes. Innovative side airbags feature unique shoulder vents that stay open and reduce pressure for smaller occupants who typically benefit from reduced forces.

Ford just announced that more than 900 Ford dealers will soon be certified to sell plug-in electrified vehicles, including Focus Electric, up from 67 dealers in February 2012. The spike in electric vehicle-certified Ford dealers reflects increased demand for the company's electrified vehicles. Ford's share of the electrified vehicle market is now second behind only Toyota.

Focus Electric safety and security features include:
•AdvanceTrac® wîth electronic stability control
•Dual-stage front airbags
•Front seat side airbags
