1972 Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado

The Fleetwood-bodied Cadillac was one of America's most elegant personal car, offering a number of design innovations, highlighted by a large new grille and hood accent stripes. It was the only luxury car that featured front-wheel drive, and its 8.2-liter V8 engine made it the world's largest production car engine at the time. The interior was luxuriously appointed and was the only luxury convertible option in America at the time.

The Eldorado was an important automobile for Cadillac, produced from the early 1950s to 2002 and over 10 different generations. It is no coincidence the name 'El Dorado 'refers to the South American lost city of gold as this was Cadillac's premium brand. The tailfins of the 1950s began with the Eldorado and pointed the way forward both in terms of styling and technological innovations.

Cadillac introduced the hand-built Series 70 Eldorado Brougham' in 1957, wearing unique trim and quad headlights, with prices equivalent to the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud. The Cadillacs were radically redesigned in 1967, capitalizing on the era's burgeoning personal luxury car market. The crisp styling was courtesy of GM styling chief Bill Mitchell and promoted as a 'personal' Cadillac, offering both unique and distinctive features.

The Eldorado introduced the new 8.2-liter engine in 1970, unconventionally sending its power to the front wheels, allowing for a very roomy interior.

The 1972 Cadillac Eldorado, offered in either a convertible or hardtop coupe, rested on a 126.3-inch wheelbase platform. Power was from an overhead valve V8 engine that displaced 500 cubic inches and offered 365 horsepower. Pricing ranged from $7,360 for the hardtop coupe to $7,680 for the convertible. Upfront was a vertical textured grille and the Cadillac name was engraved on the left side of the upper grille surround. The 'Eldorado' script was placed above the cornering lights on the front fender area. Standard equipment included Automatic Level Control, a front center armrest, and 'coach windows' on the hardtop coupe.

Just over 32,099 examples of the hardtop coupe were produced and just under 8,000 were convertibles in 1972.
