Furthermore, in order to continue in its leading role in the §egmènt, the 500L range too - including the 500L Trekking and 500L Living models, the two developments of the 500's identity that lead the 500 family to explore new territory, breaking the conventional §egmènt barriers - expands wîth two new engines: the 1.6 MultiJet II turbodiesel and the 1.4 T-Jet petrol engine.

Both turbocharged and wîth 120 HP - a section of the market which accounts for up to 16% of total sales in the §egmènt in Europe - the two power units share the same winning characteristics: performance when it counts, fun driving in all situations and limited consumption and emissions.

In the city but also for long trips, for work or for leisure, alone or together wîth family and friends. Also thanks to the new engines, today the Fiat 500L can meet all the needs of its market in terms of power, performance and efficiency wîth an offer that will grow again in the coming weeks wîth the arrival of LPG on the 120 HP 1.4 T-Jet engine. In short, wîth the introduction of these new engines into its range, the 500L confirms its ability to deliver 'more wîth less': more choice, more performance and more eco-friendliness wîth lower fuel consumption and running costs.

New 120 HP 1.6 MultiJet II

The range of the 500L, 500 Trekking and 500L Living models has grown wîth the new 120 HP 1.6 MultiJet II engine that ensures excellent dynamic performance wîth low emissions and fuel consumption. What's more, just like other diesel versions, the 1.6 MultiJet II requires routine servicing every 35,000 km (or every two years) to be kept in perfect working order.

Úsing a small-sized variable geometry turbocharger - developed by Honeywell - means delivering high torque at low rpm (320 Nm at 1750 rpm) and maximum running flexibility. But the heart of the 120 HP 1.6 MultiJet II engine is without a doubt the third-generation Common Rail injection system, which uses innovative injectors to control the amount of diesel injected into the combustion chamber wîth utmost precision, wîth a particularly quick and flexible injection sequence thanks to the balanced hydraulic servo valve.

In detail, the new injectors can manage up to eight injections per cycle and actuate increasingly advanced strategies focused on optimising the combustion, such as the Injection Rate Shaping (IRS) system which involves two consecutive injections so close together in time as to generate a continuous and modulated fuel supply into the cylinders. Thanks to this method, the combustion process is improved, all to the benefit of quieter operation and particulate and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Furthermore, the new injection system is even simpler and more reliable because the injectors have a simpler structure wîth 40 per cent fewer components.

Combined wîth a 6-speed manual gearbox, the 120 HP 1.6 MultiJet II engine offers a range of features to save fuel and cut emissions. These include a smart alternator that recovers energy while coasting and stores it in the battery, engine cooling circuit optimisation that reduces the warm-up time and a variable displacement oil pump that adjusts the oil pressure in the most appropriate way, reducing the power consumed by the pump. Naturally, the Start&Stop system is a must, while engine and transmission use low viscosity lubricant oil to minimise friction.

The exhaust gas treatment system implements close-coupled DPF technology which efficiently integrates the oxidising catalytic converter and the particulate trap (CCDPF). The component is compact to reduce exhaust counter-pressure wîth beneficial effects in terms of fuel reduction and CO2 emissions. The particulate trap is arranged close to the turbocharger outlet to provide hotter gas temperatures on average near the particulate filter. This reduces the amount of diesel fuel needed for regeneration.

Furthermore, the fact that the two components are integrated reduces the weight of the exhaust system and improves global efficiency. The CCDPF is combined wîth an advanced gas recirculation system (EGR), in which all sub-components are grouped in a single very small sized part (EGR module).

Interestingly, the small-size variable geometry turbocharger was developed by Honeywell Turbo Technologies, a major automotive turbocharger and technological solution supplier to the most important international car and lorry makers for over 60 years. The company's technological range includes innovations for diesel, petrol, natural gas and hybrid engines worldwide.

The Turbo Technologies division is part of Honeywell Transportation Systems, which also includes Honeywell Friction Materials, the global leader in friction materials for automotive brakes. Honeywell Transportation Systems improves vehicle performance, efficiency and appearance by supplying state-of-the-art technologies, first class brands and bespoke global solutions for the world's automotive .

New 120 HP 1.4 T-Jet

The offer of the 500 family, wîth the 500L, 500L Trekking and 500L Living models, has been expanded wîth the outstanding 120 HP 1.4 T-Jet engine. It is marked by reliability, a compact size and excellent balancing between spirited driving and running costs. Concrete expression of the 'downsizing' concept, the 1.4-litre engine includes technological technology solutions such as the consolidated Fire and the Turbo that ensure the best performance, reduced consumption and no compromise on 'fun to drive'.

Today, the more than 500,000 Turbocharged Fire engines produced testify to the success of a technological choice which has become a point of reference in all markets and all applications. On the 1.4 T-Jet engine, the Fire combines wîth a low-inertia turbocharger that allows excellent performance even at low rpm (215 Nm at 2,500 rpm) without the annoying lag typical of this type of engine. In this way the behaviour of the car is equal to that possible wîth naturally aspirated engines of larger displacement but wîth significantly lower fuel consumption achieved through more efficient operation of the engine.

In detail, the 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine develops 120 HP (88 kW) of maximum power achieved at 5,000 rpm and it has a max torque of 215 Nm at 2,500 rpm. This ensures high driving flexibility, reduced use of the gearbox and great response. This is aided by the low inertia of the turbocharger, which makes it possible to obtain maximum performance from a throttle command, without the annoying lag typical of this type of engine. So the figures are great: for example, the Fiat 500L records a top speed of 189 km/h and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 10.2 seconds.

Combined wîth a six-speed gearbox, the engine is ideal for those in search of a car that can handle city traffic effortlessly while keeping running costs to a minimum. Not to mention that - like all other 500L, 500L Trekking and 500L Living petrol engines - the 120 HP 1.4 T-Jet is already compliant wîth the Euro 6 emissions standard, wîth recorded consumption and emissions values in the combined cycle of 6.9 l/100 km and 159 g/km of CO2 respectively. In addition, the engine boasts fantastic reliability as the scheduled servicing interval of 30,000 km shows, without any need for intermediate servicing.

A computerised engine control system manages all functions by means of sophisticated mathematical algorithms. The accelerator control is 'drive-by-wire', without any manual connection so that the driver can obtain the desired response from the engine, relaxed or sporting, always wîth maximum energy efficiency.

These excellent results were made possible by the careful design and development of all engine components, and the most modern computer-assisted design tools and calculations were used to simulate the severest turbocharger stress conditions.

And that's not all. The main components were designed right from the development stage to guarantee the highest performance levels of a modern turbocharged engine, both in terms of resilience to mechanical stress as well as to guarantee safe and enjoyable behaviour on the road. Particular attention was paid to fluid dynamics and combustion in order to minimise power loss, thus increasing efficiency, and to reach high levels of performance wîth limited fuel consumption and emissions.

New 120 HP 1.4 Turbo Petrol LPG

In the coming weeks you will be able to order the new dual-fuel (LPG/Petrol) version of the 500L and Fiat 500L Trekking. Úse of the latest technology has allowed us to comply wîth the strict Euro 6 standard, increase the available range and ensure performance very similar to the petrol version: maximum power of 120 HP at 3,750 rpm, a top speed of 189 km/h, acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.6', combined consumption of 8.9 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 144 g/km. This performance goes hand in hand wîth a much lower operating cost due to the use of a fuel far cheaper than petrol or diesel.

Únlike a 'transformation' in the aftermarket, the 120 HP 1.4 LPG Turbo engine has been totally redesigned for integration of the LPG system by using specific materials and components and applying dedicated technology. In detail, this engine has valves and valve seats wîth configurations and materials specially designed for LPG operation. It is equipped wîth a special intake system and all the additional electrical wiring already built-in.

What's more, for this engine Fiat has developed a brand-new single control unit able to manage both types of fuel. (concept carz) Obviously, in order to attain ultimate quality and reliability, the LPG system is factory-fitted. Each car is certified, tested and guaranteed by Fiat and, as such, can take advantage of the government incentive schemes in various European countries.

The Fiat 500L Turbo LPG always starts up on petrol and switches automatically to LPG when optimal conditions are achieved (engine water temperature, minimum engine rpm threshold). It is of course possible to switch from one fuel to another whilst driving by pressing a special button built into the dashboard on the central tunnel. If the driver finishes the LPG inside the tank, switching to petrol operation takes place automatically to ensure a smooth drive.

The toroid (ring-shaped) LPG tank has a 38-litre capacity and is located in a compartment within the luggage compartment without taking any space away from luggage.

To refuel, the gas filler (complete wîth 'check' valve) is located next to the petrol filler and the filling cost in Italy is equal to about 30 euros, allowing the total range of the car to be extended to 1,400 km on extra-urban routes. The LPG tank is certified according to current legislation in order to ensure maximum safety in all environmental and operating conditions.

With LPG, the car can travel in areas where petrol and diesel vehicles are forbidden, and in more general terms, on days when environmental traffic restrictions are in force. Furthermore, there are reductions on the Provincial Transcription Tax (IPT) and on road tax payment in some Italian provinces. Compared wîth petrol and diesel fuel, LPG cuts particulate emissions to zero and slashes the emission of other pollutant substances (up to 15% less carbon dioxide, up to 20% less carbon monoxide and up to 60% less unburnt hydrocarbons). Finally, the distribution network is also widespread throughout Europe, wîth more than 10,000 points of sale.

With more than four million produced during its twenty-year production run, the tiny Fiat 500 was something to behold. Easy to spot by its rounded egg-like body, the Fiat 500 filled a need for utilitarian transportation for the Italian masses when it was introduced in 1957. The post-war European market needed an affordable option, and the rear-engined Fiat 500 was just the solution. The rear-engine design was taken from the Volkswagen Beetle and proved popular enough to be adopted by several other carmakers.

The designer behind the 500 was Dante Giacosa, who was famed for being one of the greatest designers in Fiat's history who not only dealt with the car design, but also had a big hand in the engineering. A cheap and practical town car, the Nuova (new) 500 was debuted in July 1957 and is considered one of the first city cars and lasted until 1960. Giacosa was extremely motivated to construct a car that packed more into a smaller space and he did this by making the engine mount at the rear side. It featured a smaller two-cylinder engine than all newer models, and produced just 13 bhp. The Nuova featured a fabric roof that folded entirely back to the rear of the car, similar to the Citroën 2CV. It was one of three models that came with 'suicide doors'. A stylish Sport version of the Nuova came with a special red stripe and more power in the engine.

With kart-like handling, the four-seat 500 was powered by an air-cooled 479cc flat twin, which eventually was boosted to 499cc that gave 18 bhp. With a top speed of 55mph, the 500 was an incredibly popular and practical vehicle of choice throughout Europe. Weighing at only 1,100 pounds, the 500 had a wheelbase of 72.4 inches, a length of 116.9 inches, a width and height of 52.0 inches. The 500 had a Cx (aerodynamic resistance coefficient) of 0,38, which was quite impressive for the era.

The 'D' replaced the original Nuova in 1960. Similar in appearances to the car it replaced, two differences set the models apart: the engine size and the roof. The D came with an uprated 499 cc engine that produced 17 hp as standard and continued to be used until the end of the L in 1973. The roof for the D didn't fold back as far as the Nuova, but it that earlier roof was available as the 'Transformable'. The D also came with 'suicide doors'. Torino Motors assembled the 500D in New Zealand and it was locally dubbed the 'Fiat Bambina'.

The 500 was offered as the 'Giardiniera' station wagon variant in addition to the two-door coupe in 1960 until 1975. The wagon had the standard engine laid on its side, an additional 10 cm wheelbase that made room for a useable rear seat, larger brakes and a full-length sunroof. Called the K or Giardiniera, the estate version of the Fiat 500 is the longest running model. To create a flat loading surface, the engine was laid under the floor of the trunk. The roof stretches all the way to the rear and didn't stop at the driver and front passenger like other models of the time. The K came with 'suicide doors', and unlike other models, it continued to carry these doors into the 1970s. Production moved to Desio in 1966 and the Giardiniera was constructed by Fiat subsidiary Autobianchi. Production of the Giardiniera tallied at 327,000 which later examples featuring Autobianchi rather than Fiat badging.

The Fiat 500 F or Berlina was produced from 1965 until 1973 and spans two period of 500 production, the D and the L. Because of the two production periods, the F model is very easily confused and misidentified. The F sported the same badging as the D from 1965 until 1969, but the two models can be easily told apart by the positioning of their door hinges. The F produced from June 1965 finally featured front-hinged doors while the D has 'suicide doors'. From '69 until '72 the F was sold next to the Lusso models as the less expensive 'base model' version. There wasn't much mechanically different from the F and L, but the main differences lay in the bumpers and the interior. The L had an extra chrome nudge bar, and the inside of the L featured a fresher updated look while the F interior didn't change from the original 1957 design.

Introduced in 1968 was the L or Lusso 500 model. It featured a modern interior that included a revamped dashboard and paid special attention to comfort and style for the passenger. The 500 L was produced until 1972.

The final version of the 500 was the R or Rinnovata version. The R model sported a larger 594 cc engine that was designed by Abarth with a more practical power rating of 23 bhp and a full synchromesh gearbox. This final model was much more comfortable than previous version yet was more simply equipped and trimmed than before. The fuel gauge was removed and only the low fuel indicator was left.

Several custom models of the 500 were produced, included the 'Jolly' version by Carrozzeria Ghia with inspiration taken from the very exclusive Fiat 600 Jolly. The Jolly came with wicker seats, a chopped-roof, no doors and usually seen with a canopy roof.

Showing that they had a lot of muscle behind their compact frame, seven Fiat 500s contested the first and only Liège-Brescia-Liège Rally in July of 1958. They were beaten by Messerschmitt TG500 and the Berkeley SE492s, but the little Italian cars show their rugged side and proved they were capable of incredible durability. Reputed to be the smallest car to complete a world circumnavigation, a 1969 Fiat 500 travelled 32,000 road kilometers in less than 100 days. In 2005 a 1973 500 took a 16,000 km trip travelling through Russia for a 100 day journey. Its progress was documented by newspaper and television stations worldwide and eventually a book entitled La bizzarra impresa ('The bizarre exploit') was published about the trip. In 2007 this same car became the first Fiat 500 to reach the Sahara dunes was taken around the Mediterranean Sea for over 10,000 kilometers.

The Fiat 500 was produced from 1957 until 1975 and was replaced with the Fiat 126. The 500 R was sold alongside the 126 for two years before the 500 was retired. More than 3.6 million Fiat 500 cars were sold during its lifetime and at end the production had been outsourced to a Polish company called FSM. The 126 never reached the same popularity as its predecessor in Italy. In March of 2007 Fiat debuted the all-new 500 model, based on the '04 Fiat Trepiuno concept. Its arrival coincided with fifty years since the original 500. The new 500 is also dubbed the bambino and competes with the Mini Cooper and the Volkswagen Beetle.
