1960 Phoenix Saab

This vehicle is called a Phoenix because it is like a mythical bird and rose from its own ashes. The car made its appearance at the Pomona sports car races in 1960 where it was powered by a 750cc Mercury outboard engine. The powerplant was later switched with a SAAB powerplant.

Along with problematic engines, the position and layout also caused issues. After further experimentation, the engine was turned end-for-end and run backward. After one more outing at Tucson in 1961 and a slalom stint, the car was sidelined.

The current owner found the car in the late 1970s and negotiated its purchase. After nearly five years of restoration, the car was brought back and returned to the racetrack, competing at Riverside and Willow Springs. In 1986 and 1987, it won the Vintage Auto Racing Association class GMP championship.
