1963 Harcraft Mickey Thompson Indy Special

1963 Harcraft Mickey Thompson Indy Special 1963 Harcraft Mickey Thompson Indy Special 1963 Harcraft Mickey Thompson Indy Special This car was originally built for Mickey Thompson's first effort to compete in the Indianapolis 500 in 1962. With a Buick V8 fitted, it qualified and was driven by Dan Gurney in his first appearance at Indy, finishing in 20th place. Although Gurney was just a rookie, he achieved the seventh-fastest qualifying time, at 147.886 mph. In 1963 Thompson returned to Indy with the car, this time fitted with a Chevrolet V8, but after several attempts were made by driver Bill Cheesbourg, it failed to make the grid. Thompson trailered the car back to California and it languished in a corner of his shop for decades. The current owner acquired the car in 2014. A time capsule of Indy racing from a half-century back, the car has all its original paint, decals, and lettering, as well as its original Firestone tires mounted on the original Halibrand wheels.
