1971 Mercury Comet

The Mercury Comet, introduced in 1960, was initially based on the compact Ford Falcon. It was later based on the intermediate Ford Fairlane and later on the compact Ford Maverick. Production of the Comet would continue until 1969 and then again from 1971 through 1977.

The Comets were given upgraded interior trim than their Ford counterparts and a slightly longer wheelbase. The base engine was the 170 cubic-inch six-cylinder unit fitted with a single-barrel carburetor and offering 100 horsepower. Optional powerplants included the 200 cubic-inch inline-6, producing 115 horsepower and a 302 cubic-inch V8 with a 2-barrel carburetor producing 210 horsepower. Transmission options were either a 3-speed manual or 3-speed automatic with either floor-mounted or column shifters.

Bodystyles included a two or four-door sedan in base and GT series. The GT option included a blacked-out grille, high-back bucket seats, wheel trim rings, dual body-side tape stripes, dual racing mirrors, black instrument panel, deluxe door trim, bright window frames, and a simulated hood scoop.
