High bid of $20,000 at 2016 Mecum : Monterey. (did not sell)
Civil engineer Reginald Walter Maudslay founded the Standard Motor Company in Coventry, England, in 1903. Maudslay entered a Standard (the first Standard entered in competition) in the inaugural RAC Tourist Trophy race where it finished 11th in a field of over 40 entrants. The Standard Motor Company enjoyed rapid success in the early years, supplying fleets to British royalty and other affluent customers. During World War I, Standard supported the war effort by building more than 1,000 aircraft before resuming car production in 1919. In the late 1920s, the company's fortunes began to turn, so the company standardized its offerings and began supplying chassis to external coachbuilders such as Jensen, Avon, and Swallow Sidecar Company. Standard and Avon produced a line of sports cars in 1930, which featured Standard's running gear and chassis.
