For 1997, the Pontiac Sunfire was available as a coupe, convertible and sedan in SE and GT trim levels. The GT trim level came only as a coupe and was priced at $13,720. The four-cylinder engines were carried over from the previous year, with the base engine being a 2.2-liter overhead valve unit which produced 120 horsepower. The GT came standard with the DOHC 2.4-liter unit which brought horsepower to 150 bhp. This engine was optional on the SE trim line. A low-friction 4T40E electronically controlled four-speed automatic replaced the previously standard three-speed automatic transmission on the convertible. The SE Convertible also gained controlled cycle wipers, rear window defroster and cruise control. All Sunfires received foglamps as part of their standard equipment. Changes were made to all Sunfires to help them comply with new dynamic side-impact standards.
