1952 Ford Golden Rod 1952 Ford Golden Rod 1952 Ford Golden Rod The original Golden Rod was designed and built in 1952 by 'Tommy' Thompson in his basement garage in Golden, Colorado. Tommy was a designer and engineer for Coors Beer, an amateur racing enthusiast and a charter member of the Denver Timing Association. He named the car the 'Golden Rod' after his home town of Golden, Colorado and as it is a hot rod. The chosen color was Goldenrod Yellow for its unique visibility on the Bonneville Salt Flats. It sits on a modified Model 'A' Ford frame and was first powered by a de-stroked Oldsmobile Rocket V-8 displacing 265 cubic inches for class C/Streamliner. The fastest speed with this engine was 189.77 mph. From 1959 to 1977 Golden Rod was powered by a sleeved 394 cubic-inch Oldsmobile engine for class B/Streamliner donated by General Motors. The fastest recorded time with this power plant was 205.01 mph in 1959.
