1974 Mercury Comet

The Mercury Comet returned in 1971 as a compact car. It had a very similar design to the Maverick with a horizontal bar grille that protruded slightly at the front. Alongside the grille were rectangular signal lights flanked by two headlights that were recessed into a chromed background. Bodystyles included a coupe and sedan.

For 1974, the Comet received new bumpers in the front and back with slightly different body moldings. Standard features included windshield washers, two-speed windshield wipers, dual hydraulic brakes with warning light system, locking steering column, cigar lighter, energy-absorbing steering wheel, and Blend-Air heater.

The pricing was similar for both bodystyles, with the 2-door sedan costing $2,430 while the 4-door version had a base price of $2,490. A total of 64,751 examples of the 2-door and 60,944 of the 4-door were built.

The base engine was an overhead valve six-cylinder unit displacing 200 CID and offering 84 SAE horsepower. An optional 250 CID one-barrel version was available bringing horsepower to 91 horsepower. The 302 CID V8 was also available at extra cost, bringing horsepower to 140 horsepower. Optional packages included the GT, DeLuxe, and Convenience and Custom group. The GT equipment included a 302 V8 motor, front disc brakes, power steering, high back bucket seats, pony wheels, GT hood Scoop, GT side stripes, and contrasting paint around the tail light and in the front grille.
