ROAD SAFETY CHARITY URGES SCHOOLS TO JOIN 90,000 LITTLE FEET TAKING PART IN BRAKE'S GIANT WALK
March 3, 2015 by BrakeBrake, the road safety charity, is encouraging teachers to register for Brake's Giant Walk, to promote the benefits of walking to school and to help teach road safety. This annual event takes place on Wednesday 10 June 2015, and already 45,000 children from over two hundred schools are registered to take part. Every year this great event sees tens of thousands of kids learning about road safety in their classroom, promoting the benefits of safe walking and cycling to school, and walking to call for safer driving in their community. This year, to date, we have 90,000 little feet registered to take part planning to walk over 47,000 kilometres and Brake is calling for more teachers to sign up today and get involved in this important event. Brake's Giant Walk involves children across the UK taking part in a short walk of a minimum of 500 metres from their school gates to call for safer roads around their school and to promote safe walking and cycling. The event is a great focal point for schools to teach road safety in class using resources and advice from Brake – road safety can be used to teach lessons on a range of subjects. Schools can use their walk to call on drivers to slow down in their community or call for other local road safety measures. The project also raises funds for Brake's work to improve road safety and care for families devastated by a death or injury on roads, because most schools fundraise on the day. Brake's Giant Walk empowers children and schools to make their communities safer, healthier, and greener, while preventing devastating child casualties. REGISTER NOW! Three giant reasons for schools to register today: ◾Learning about road safety: schools can use the event as a focal point for running lessons about road safety. Children could learn about travel to school around the world in geography, find out about the forces in road crashes in science, or learn about travel through the ages in history. Brake provides resources advice and guidance to help teachers plan lessons around their Giant Walk. ◾Slow down drivers and get kids walking: Brake's Giant Walk can be used to help schools call for safer roads in their community. The walk allows children to call for drivers to slow down and look out for children. Brake can help schools get publicity through local media, and promote the event in their newsletter or website, to get the road safety message out. ◾Help bereaved and injured families: Children can be sponsored by family and friends to take part, or schools can run other fundraising events with advice from Brake, helping Brake campaign for road safety and support families bereaved and injured by road crashes. About Brake's Giant Walk Brake's Giant Walk is an annual event in primary schools where children learn about traffic pollution and danger, and transport choices. Schools taking part get their pupils to walk (in a crocodile of supervised kids, holding hands on safe pavements, or around the school's grounds) which gives children a voice, helping them tell drivers to slow down and look out for people on foot. Children can be sponsored to take part and schools can run fundraising events, helping fund Brake's campaigns and services for families bereaved and injured by road crashes.
