FANS TO LIVE REAL 'RUSH' OF FORMULA 1 CARS AT ROLEX MONTEREY MOTORSPORTS REUNION

March 5, 2015 by MAZDA Raceway Laguna Seca

FANS TO LIVE REAL 'RUSH' OF FORMULA 1 CARS AT ROLEX MONTEREY MOTORSPORTS REUNIONDirector Ron Howard's 2013 movie drama 'Rush' will spring to life when up to 30 historic Formula 1 cars line up on the grid for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion this August 13-16 at the iconic Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca road course.

The same cars that were originally involved in the epic driving battle for the 1976 F1 World Championship between Ferrari's Niki Lauda and McLaren's James Hunt (who won by a scant one point) are among the historically accurate and authentic cars competing in Monterey. The field is restricted to 3-liter Formula 1 cars that raced between 1967 and 1984 in the world's premier racing series.

'For many European drivers, this will be their first time driving Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca,' said Ron Maydon of Masters Historic Racing, an organizer of Formula 1 races across Europe. 'There was an increased level of excitement as soon as it was announced that Formula 1 cars would be included this year at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.'

Bearing their famous driver names, the likes of Hunt, Lauda, Mario Andretti and Emerson Fittipaldi, the cars have been restored to their original specifications and livery. Only authentic cars that pass the strict scrutineering process are accepted to compete in the historic car race. Formula 1 cars last raced at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion in 2013, and typically alternate years with the thunderous Can-Am cars of the '60 and early '70s.

'This year's Formula 1 grid will showcase a number of cars that have not been seen on this side of the pond in years, if ever,' said Gill Campbell, CEO/general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. 'Their high-pitched engines will provide a stark contrast to the rumble and growl of 40 racing Shelby GT350s, which is this year's featured marque.'

The tradition that began in 1974 that features a marque to honor continues with the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Shelby GT350. While Carroll Shelby and the Shelby Cobra have been honored in the past, this is the first time the GT350 is the special marque. Ford Motor Company is supporting the achievement with what will be a memorable paddock heritage display.

A celebration of motorsports history, the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and the renowned Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance anchor the Monterey Classic Car Week. Attracting visitors from around the world, the festivities make it the largest event on the Central Coast, bustling with everything a petrol head could want and imagine.
