FOUR-WHEELED THOROUGHBREDS GALLOP TOWARDS TATTERSALLS

July 6, 2016 by Barons

FOUR-WHEELED THOROUGHBREDS GALLOP TOWARDS TATTERSALLSThe world's oldest bloodstock auctioneers will play host to some rather spectacular thoroughbreds of the four-wheeled variety on July 12th, at Barons' Connoisseurs Classic Car Collection sale at Tattersalls at Newmarket.

The saleroom will resemble the ultimate private motoring museum, as magnificent machine after magnificent machine is paraded in all its glory.

Entries include not one but two Bentley R Type Continental Fastbacks, with distinctive, sleek styling by H J Mulliner. One was the 1953 Geneva Show car. Featuring special factory equipment, including a kilometer speedometer and heavier front shock absorbers, it has an estimate of £1,000,000-£1,300,000. Its slightly younger auction 'stablemate' is the highly original 1954 example, which has been in one family ownership for 40 years and is used on a regular basis (£750,000-£1,000,000).

Even rarer than the R Type Continental Fastbacks, and a model which is catching the eye of investors, is the Bentley S1 Continental Fastback. The 1957 Mulliner-bodied example of this powerful motor car on offer at Barons at Tattersalls has recently been refurbished but is still original in terms of upholstery etc., and offers great investment potential (£340,000-£390,000).

The 1962 Jaguar S1 E-type roadster is essentially brand new, fresh from restoration and with just 250 shakedown miles completed. It was shipped to New York in 1962, and is now finished its original opalescent gunmetal, with a burgundy mohair hood. Still in original LHD configuration, it's about as close as you can get to an E-type straight off the 1962 Browns Lane production line (£230,000-£260,000).

Another essentially 'new' car in the sale is the 1964 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud 3 convertible. Benefitting from a full nut and bolt restoration, this is virtually a brand new Rolls-Royce delivered fifty years late. An original Mulliner car was purchased and disassembled for use as a template, so the Silver Cloud 3 is an absolute millimeter-perfect copy of an original Mulliner car. Estimate: £235,000-£265,000.

In 1955 Jack Barclay displayed a four-door Bentley S1 Sports Saloon on its Earls Court Motor Show stand. Subsequently, and at vast expense, that car was converted into a beautiful, two-door convertible, with all-aluminium panel work. Now recently emerged from an extensive restoration, this superb motor car is presented in as-new condition, but still bearing original features such as its special order white steering wheel. Estimate: £235,000-£265,000.

The Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk 1 was sold new to Mr Grahame Bourne in 1954. He kept the car for 57 years, finally selling it when he was 91 years old. Its new owner then drove the car in the 2012 Mille Miglia. It is in beautifully original condition, reflecting the love and attention lavished upon it over more than half a century by Mr Bourne. Estimate £130,000-£150,000.
