Junior Judging Team Announced For This Weekend's Pinehurst Concours d'Elegance

May 3, 2017 by Pinehurst Concours

VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. (May 3, 2017) – The team of student judges from surrounding Moore County high schools have been announced for Saturday's Pinehurst Concours d'Elegance, with one deserving prep judge poised to earn a college scholarship.

The vintage car showcase has awarded a college scholarship toward a continuing education in automotive trades and technology at Sandhills Community College each of the last four years. Prep students will be paired this weekend with world-class Pinehurst Concours judges in each of the 14 car classes, forming a generational team of rare car inspectors using a meticulous 100-point judging system.

'The Concours scholarship has helped me tremendously, pushing me in the right direction and setting me up in a program at East Carolina University that I otherwise would not have known about, or been eligible for,' said 2014 scholarship winner Cody Lunday of Pinecrest High School. 'Plus, it was a ton of fun. Any student able to take part in the student judging program should absolutely do so, you will not regret it.'

The senior judges mentor the apprentice students in the process of looking for a correct and authentic restoration or preservation. In return, the junior judge helps with documenting the score on a modern Lenovo tablet – and lifelong friendships are often formed.

'The Pinehurst Concours uses ICJAG (International Chief Judge Advisory Group) judging standards and judging/ scoring format,' said Pinehurst Concours chief judge Nigel Matthews. 'One of the objectives of ICJAG is to encourage younger judges into the world of Concours judging, which for many years has been somewhat of a closed door. The hobby is in need of younger support before we experience a demographic shortfall of experienced judges.

'As a founding member of ICJAG I'm delighted that Pinehurst Concours president Jay Howard has taken the approach of inviting junior judges to be a part of the team,' added Matthews. 'This has been done since day one of the event and is a first as far as I'm aware at any Concours in North America. At Pinehurst it's a two-way street with the junior judges assisting the senior judges by operating the electronic tablets used for judging and scoring -- another first for North America -- taking place at Pinehurst.'

The North Moore High School judging team roster includes Jatony Bond, Ethan Brown, Ronnie Parsons and Dawson Buie; the Union Pines High School judging team roster includes Kalon Green, Robert James Oakley, Brenden Tyler Jones and Trent Brigham; the Pinecrest High School judging team includes Isaac Johnson, Like Zimmerman, Sabrina Brown and Josh Koepp. Additional judges from Sandhills Community College include 2016 scholarship winner Caleb Patterson, Calvin Austin, Alex Diekhoff and Noah Richardson.

'We are thrilled with the strong partnership that's developed between the Pinehurst Concours and Sandhills Community College,' said SCC president John Dempsey. 'Not only does the Concours celebrate and draw attention to the world's finest automobiles, but it often inspires young people to pursue careers in the automotive field. The Pinehurst Concours Scholarship at Sandhills inspires and rewards those young people and makes it possible for them to pursue their dreams in the world of automobiles. It is a wonderful partnership, and we at Sandhills are very grateful to be its beneficiary.'
