A works Lancia Delta HF Integrale Evolution, once driven by four-times World Rally Champion Juha Kankkunen, made almost double its lower estimate when it sold for £225,000 at the Silverstone Classic Race Car Sale held at Silverstone on 27th July.

Resplendent in its original Martini Racing colours the Abarth-prepared Lancia was auctioned by Silverstone Auctions at the Wing Building, Silverstone, prior to the world's biggest classic racing festival, the Silverstone Classic.

As the car was announced a bidding war broke out almost immediately with multiple phone bids battling with room, online and commission bidders, pushing the price well beyond its estimate within minutes. Bids drew gasps from the busy sale room as they passed the £200,000 mark, and applause broke out when the hammer went down in favour of a room bidder for £225,000 including buyer's premium, £105,000 more than its lower estimate of £120,000.

'The car is a true rally legend and an important part of World Rally Championship history and clearly much in demand on the evening,' commented Nick Whale, managing director of Silverstone Auctions. 'It was a dramatic highlight in a remarkably successful race car sale.'

Other notable competition cars on the night included the ex-Tim Harvey BMW E30 M3 in its historic Labatt's livery which sold to a phone bidder for £146,250 including premium, and a superb BMW 320 E36, originally built by McLaren, which was subject to a three-way bidding war and eventually hammered away for £92,250 including premium, roaring past its lower estimate by £17,250.

A faithfully restored 1961 Jaguar MKII 3.8 prepared to FIA historic regulations attracted a great deal of attention in the room but eventually went to an online bidder in the Netherlands for £45,000, while a 1966 Mini Cooper, prepared to Cooper S race spec with a 1275cc engine and sporting an FIA Historic Technical Passport, went to a bidder in Australia for £37,125 including premium.
