Atlanta Concours' 2019 New Venue Is Highlighted By Globally Renowned Cars And Judges

Downtown Atlanta's Tyler Perry Studios will be the site of Nearly 180 Outstanding Vehicles on their Historic Parade Field

ATLANTA – September 26, 2019 – As the Atlanta Concours d'Elegance nears its 4th year October 19-20th, 2019, the anticipated showing includes a blend of local flavor amidst a strong series of firsts – including an all new location at downtown's Tyler Perry Studios on the historic Fort McPherson Army Base; the returning Magnificent Seven competition within the Concours' firstInvitational Cars and Coffee; and a field of nearly 40 renowned concours judges heralded from throughout the nation to be led by JCNA Chief Judge David Kirkman and Honorary Judges Ken Gross and Ed Gilbertson.

And while nearly 1800 outstanding vehicles will make their own debuts at this year's show, another 'first' for the Atlanta Concours will be six unique cars that have belonged to well recognized and distinguished owners that will make their own marque -- blending passion, beauty and a rich heritage among an illustrious field of dreams. For the first time, the 'Cars of Iconic Black Americans' will form their own collection within the weekend of elegance and will include vehicles owned by BB King; Muhammad Ali; Sammy Davis, Jr.; Sam Cooke and Bojangles– highlighting a group of cars as diverse as their owner's backgrounds.

Curated by Atlanta Concours Advisory Board Member Aaron Spaulding, the 'Cars of Iconic Black Americans' has grown from merely a vision since the show's inception in 2016, to reality in 2019 – and its momentum is stirring other types of groupings within the show as well. However, as Spaulding notes, 'the beauty of these cars is in the blending of musicians, entertainers, and athletes – all through a love of automobiles.'

While each car was notable in its day, its iconic owners gave each vehicle extended notoriety for brands including Duesenberg, Ferrari and Rolls Royce. The vehicles to be displayed will include a 1935 Duesenberg JN Berline; 1963 Ferrari 250 GT Lusso Coupe; along with three distinct Rolls Royces -- 1977 Rolls Royce Camarque; 1977 Rolls Royce Corniche; and 1983 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow.

AND THERE'S MORE

Non-judged, but equally notable, anticipated race cars to be shown, will include:
•The restored 1956 Lotus Eleven (XI) – direct from the Barber Museum in Alabama, and one of the most successful race car designs for Lotus ever created

•The highly acclaimed 'Spirit of Miami' driven by F1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi

•The Chevrolet ASTROVETTE -- based on a 1968 Chevrolet convertible and part of an aerodynamic study to increase the aero efficiency of the Corvette – coming from the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY, where it has been housed in its fully restored condition since 1992.

CONTINUED PLANS FOR 2020

Following three significant years of growth as a regional show, the Atlanta Concours d'Elegance is poising itself for even more expansion – through venue, sponsorship and for 2020 -- the decision to implement full ICJAG standards.

According to Honorary Atlanta Concours Judge Ed Gilbertson, who is also Chairman of the International Chief Judge Advisory Group (ICJAG) the move will include use of all ICJAG judging forms and judging guidelines – placing the Atlanta event among the highest standards set for globally renowned shows such as Pebble Beach; Concours d'Elegance Suisse (Switzerland); Cobble Beach Concours (Ontario, Canada); Palm Beach Cavallino Classic; and 21 Gun Salute Concours d'Elegance in New Delhi, India.

Current Chief Judge, David Kirkman, a strong supporter of ICJAG and a former chief class judge at numerous ICJAG-judged shows nationwide, had previously informed the Atlanta Concours that he was retiring from the position of Chief Judge in 2020, but will remain as Chief Judge Emeritus. Kirkman has provided dedicated leadership and volunteer service since the show's inception in 2016 and will continue to be actively involved in the Atlanta Concours as the show follows its path toward recognition as a major international concours.

Beginning in 2020, the Atlanta Concours will serve as a key ICJAG training location, and as such has appointed Peter Bartelli, as next year's Chief Judge. Bartelli currently serves as director of development for ICJAG judging forms and guidelines and is a charter member of the ICJAG organization. He additionally is a former head judge for the Porsche Club of America, the largest marque club in the United States.
