Growing Older Gracefully - Audi A3 Sportback Is 2020 What Car? Used Car Of The YearHighly respected automotive consumer title singles out Audi compact hatchback for its most prized used car award

An undeniably premium finish and exceptional quality have always given the Audi A3 Sportback abundant kerb appeal, and the popular compact hatchback has just landed the most prized What Car? Used Car of the Year Award as further proof that there is genuine substance beneath the sheen.

The five-door A3 is already very familiar with What Car? silverware, having won through in the new car-focused What Car? Awards in the Family Car category on multiple occasions, and also scooped the overall Car of the Year Award in 2013. The same desirability, versatility and efficiency that won over the judges on those occasions has swayed them again where the car's attractions as a used proposition are concerned.

According to the judges' citation, the A3 triumphed because 'it's great to drive, for starters, and it comes with a classy interior that few rivals can match. It rides and handles superbly too, and it's wonderfully refined and comfortable to spend time in.'

The testers went on to praise the car's 'great range of engines…whether you're after an economical diesel or a punchy petrol.' They summed up by writing: 'It's a fantastic car as well as a terrific used buy, and a thoroughly deserving winner.'

Commenting on the excellent result, Audi National Used Car Manager Maria Mawby said: 'Given the breadth of choice the What Car? team was faced with here, not to mention the calibre of the competition, the fact that the A3 Sportback has prevailed really bears testament to the painstaking attention to detail and quality that has gone into the car. This award is a ringing endorsement of the enduring appeal of the A3 model line and we are incredibly proud and grateful to have received it.'

The A3 Sportback is currently available with a broad range of engines starting with a peppy 1.0-litre three-cylinder with 116PS in the 30 TFSI model and rounding off with 184PS and 190PS four-cylinder TDI and TFSI units in the 40 TDI quattro and 40 TFSI quattro. Specification options include SE Technik, Sport, S line and Black Edition. For customers looking for even more in the way of performance, 300PS S3 and 400PS RS 3 models are also available at the head of the line-up.
