Ultimate Mercedes-Benz AMG Powers to Top Spot in Bonhams MPH March Sale

A rare 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC AMG 6.0 'Wide Body', one of 26 believed examples produced of what is considered to be the ultimate AMG, was the top lot of the Bonhams MPH March Sale on 20 March, selling for £146,250, leading the successful sale which had an 83 per cent sell-through rate.

AMG's grand tourer caused a storm for its blistering performance when launched in 1986, with its 6.0-litre 385bhp V8 engine achieving a 0-60mph acceleration in under six seconds, while it was also noted for its bespoke 'wide body' aero kit. This example ordered new from a dealership in Munich, Germany, had been imported into the UK in 2017 by its enthusiast vendor, who kept it virtually unused in his private collection.

The top ten lots all achieved or exceeded their pre-sale estimates, in the first Bonhams MPH sale of 2021, which was staged as a live and online auction, with the auctioneer at the rostrum and the sale livestreamed via bonhams.com.

Other highlights included:

1961 Mercedes-Benz 300d Adenauer Limousine, sold for £54,000. The luxury car of choice of businessmen and politicians in its day, this particular car had been owned by the former airline entrepreneur Sir Freddie Laker.

1998 Lotus Esprit V8, sold for £47,250. This outstanding example of Lotus' supercar powered by its own celebrated V8 engine was presented in classic Racing Green livery.

1973 Jaguar XJC Prototype, realised £16,875. A previous press demonstrator offered as a project requiring final completion, with bodywork completed to a high standard and a choice of leather and cloth interiors.

Rob Hubbard, Head of Bonhams MPH, said: 'This has been a very good start to 2021 for Bonhams MPH. Although the country is in lockdown, the classic and collector's car market it still active and our live and online sale format has once again proved successful.

We are particularly pleased with the global reach achieved. We had bidders from the Eurozone, Canada and the USA, where the AMG found a new home.'

'We are now looking forward to hosting our first live auction of the year in May.'

The next Bonhams MPH sale will be staged as a traditional live auction (subject to local Covid-19 regulations) on 22 May. Consignments are being invited now: contact the team at mph@bonhams.com.
