Herndon, VA — Volkswagen of America, Inc. announced today that the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI was named a 2022TOP SAFETY PICK by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) when equipped with High Beam Control (Light Assist). The 2022 Volkswagen Golf R also earned a place on the list as a 2022 TOP SAFETY PICK+.

'TOP SAFETY PICK' is based on 'good' ratings in six crashworthiness tests plus no less than an 'acceptable' rating for available headlights, and no less than an 'advanced' rating for both front crash prevention tests. The 2022 Golf GTI earns good ratings in the six crashworthiness evaluations. The LED headlights, with available High Beam Control (Light Assist), standard on the Autobahn trim, receive an acceptable rating. The Front Assist system—standard on all Golf models—receives a superior rating for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and an advanced rating for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention.

'TOP SAFETY PICK+' is based on 'good' ratings in six crashworthiness tests plus no less than an 'acceptable' rating for standard headlights, and no less than an 'advanced' rating for both front crash prevention tests. The Front Assist system receives a superior rating for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention and an advanced rating for vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention.

Volkswagen's Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring (Front Assist) is intended to warn drivers of potential frontal collisions (Forward Collision Warning) with vehicles and pedestrians, and in some cases provide automatic braking assistance (Autonomous Emergency Braking). New for 2022, the system can now detect cyclists or pedestrians traveling parallel to the vehicle and alert the driver if they turn into the vehicle's path.

In addition to Front Assist, other standard driver assistance features offered on the 2022 Golf models include Side Assist (Blind Spot Monitor) and Rear Traffic Alert. Volkswagen's IQ.DRIVE technology is standard for Golf models, and enables Travel Assist (semi-automated driving assistance), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Stop and Go and Lane Assist (Lane Keeping System). Emergency Assist (semi-automated vehicle assistance in a medical emergency) is only available on models equipped with automatic transmission. In addition to IQ.DRIVE, Park Distance Control, Park Assist (Parking Steering Assistant), Dynamic Road Sign Display and Light Assist (High Beam Control for headlights) are standard for Golf R and available on some Golf GTI trims.

MSRP for the 2022 Golf GTI starts at $29,880 for the manual transmission and a starting MSRP of $30,680 for the DSG® dual-clutch automatic. Destination for all Golf GTI models is $1,095.

The 2022 Golf R is sold fully loaded and starts at an MSRP of $44,090 with the manual transmission and $44,890 with the DSG® dual-clutch automatic. Destination for all Golf R models is $1,095.

IIHS launched its front crash prevention rating program in 2013 to help consumers sort through the maze of available technologies and zero in on the systems it determines to be most effective.
