Alfa was formed in Italy in 1910 and renamed to Alfa Romeo in 1915. The company soon found racing success when a brilliant mechanical engineer of Hungarian heritage was hired in 1923. The company was soon on the map with the cars leading by impressive margins. Jano's 8C engine was powerful, strong, reliable, and complex.
This car, chassis number 2311237, is an Alfa Romeo 8C2300 that began life in August of 1934 serving as a factory 'Lungo' alloy-bodied show car with a Castagna drophead coupe body. After the show season, the car was imported into Britain by London Bentley Dealer Jack Barclay in March of 1935. It was then sold to a gentleman racer Roy Gibson in April 1935. His needs required an alloy sports body for the chassis. The work took eight months of construction and when it was done, it looked like no other Alfa. The car passed through several owners before Angela Cherrett, noted 8C author and expert, purchased the car in 1964. The car remained in her care for the next 45 years.
The car has been properly maintained by a series of owners who never restored the car. It is remarkably as-new with all original components including the supercharger fitted to its dual overhead cam straight eight. It was last repainted around 50 years ago.
