Ferrari Apprentices Go Back In TimeApprenticeship now includes modules on Classic Car Technology

London, 01 March 2016

In this digital world of apps and smartphones, where you can pay for a coffee with your phone, and unlock that phone with a fingerprint scan, most school-leavers have no understanding of what a ballast resistor ignition system, a down-draught 6-carb Webber, or a straight-cut dog-mesh gearbox is, or how they work. In fact, very few school-leavers have any experience of what gearboxes were like to use before flappy paddles became so fashionable1 or had no synchromesh.

That is why Ferrari has upgraded its Apprenticeship programme for school-leavers aged 16-19 with a new training module focused on Classic Car Technology, including:

◾Ballast resistor ignition systems.

◾Magneto ignition systems both single and twin.

◾Dynamo charging systems.

◾Twin points distributor set ups.

◾Multiple Webber carburetor set ups, from 3 to 6 carbs.

◾Mechanical fuel injection systems.

◾Straight cut dog mesh gearboxes.

1 Ferrari was the first manufacturer to make a car with a paddleshift gearbox: the John Barnard designed F1-89 which Nigel Mansell drove for the Scuderia Ferrari in 1989. This led directly to the development of the world's first road car with a paddleshift gearbox: the classic F355 Berlinetta in 1994. Since the introduction of the 430 Scuderia in 2009, all Ferrari cars feature a paddleshift gearbox.
