Elvis' Rare BMW 507 Stars At The Amelia Island Concours

Elvis' Rare BMW 507 Stars At The Amelia Island ConcoursElvis Presley's 507 roadster will be featured in the 22nd annual Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance BMW 500 class on Sunday March 12, 2017 at the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island.

Elvis took delivery of his 507 roadster on December 28, 1958 during his service in the US Army while stationed in Germany. The Feather White roadster suffered at the hands, or in this case, the lips of his most ardent female fans. Many of them kissed the white roadster with scarlet lips. Some wrote amorous messages in lipstick. It finally got to Pvt. Presley and he had the 507 painted lipstick red.

Always listed as one of the most beautiful cars ever produced the 507 was designed by Albrecht Goertz. BMW's first 500 series cars of the 1950s ultimately carried Europe's first post-war V-8 engine and the unfortunate nickname 'the baroque angel' because of its Rubenesquecontours. Designer Goertz took an entirely different and futuristic course when drew the shape of the 507. Astonishingly, the 507 was Goertz's first complete car design.

'The creation of the BMW 507 was one of those crystal moments that change everything,' said Bill Warner, founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. 'The 507 altered people's impressions of BMW and very likely changed the company's take on its capabilities.'

The line and stance of the 507 can still be glimpsed in BMW's Z07concept car and the V-8 powered Z8 roadster.

Of the 253 BMW 507s produced just 39 of the roadsters were imported in America. Fewer than 200 are said to survive.

'The 507 is one of those perfectly styled cars that make people stop and stare, even on a concours field packed with classics,' said Warner. 'Having any 507 on the field really enhances any concours and we're very grateful to BMW for sending Elvis' actual 507 to Amelia.'
