Bill Warner Named Honorary Chairman at The Elegance AT Hershey
Hershey, PA - 'Great cars and special movies are among the most evocative and enduring elements of modern American life and culture,' Bill Warner, founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, told Forbes.com last week. How appropriate since this year's Elegance will feature incredible cars and a 'Hollywood Nights' theme for its annual Gala on Saturday evening, June 10!
'Everyone in the concours world knows Bill and we are greatly indebted to him for accepting the Honorary Chairman role for The Elegance at Hershey to be held June 9-11, 2017, at The Hotel Hershey in Hershey, PA. The Elegance is thrilled to have the 'chairman's chairman,' Bill Warner, as our Honorary Chairman this year. Bill, as the founder and Chairman of the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, has mastered the art of overseeing a world-renowned event,' comments Steve Moskowitz of The Elegance Board. 'We invited Bill because his lifetime experiences and contributions to racing, race photography and journalism rank him as a true giant in the collectible hobby,' adds Steve.
Bill Warner has been around automobiles his whole life. As a teenager, he worked at the local Volkswagen and import dealership in the parts department and driving the delivery truck. On weekends, he worked as a 'gopher' for the dealership racing team and became enthralled with motor racing. Upon earning his degree in Electrical Engineering, he entered the family filter business and began working on the side for Sports Car Graphic magazine. In 1971, he began his relationship with Road & Track magazine, which continues today.
Bill's photographs and writing have appeared in Road & Track, Car And Driver, Autoweek, The Atlantic Monthly, Automobile, Automotor und Sport, Classic & Sportscar, Porsche Panorama and Forza to mention a few. His photography has won awards from The Los Angeles Art Directors, the Creative Arts Yearbook and the Sports Car Club of America (Photographer Of The Year in 1970). His photos have been featured in the Petersen Museum in Los Angeles as part of the 50th Anniversary of Ferrari and the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
In 1975, he teamed with Tom Nehl in a Porsche 911 to finish 14th in the third running of the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash (AKA The Cannonball Run). Bill has numerous important personal and automotive accomplishments. He currently restores and collects interesting cars.
However, one of his most significant contributions came to life in 1996, when Bill founded The Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance near his home in Jacksonville, FL. In the seventeen year history of the show, it has raised over $2.25 million for Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, Spina Bifida of Jacksonville, The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society and the Shop With Cops program of Fernandina Beach and Nassau County, Florida. For his charitable work, he was recognized by The Rotary Club of South Jacksonville with The Sherman Award, The WTLV Channel 12 Twelve Who Care Award, The National Philanthropic Award as Volunteer of the Year and the American Institute for Public Service Jefferson Award. Most recently, he received the Veterans of Influence Award by the Jacksonville Business Journal.
Finally, Bill states, 'My wife of fifty years, Jane, has patiently put up with my automotive mania with an understanding beyond reasonable expectation; as have my children and grandchildren.'
