Volkswagen Does The Double At Auto Express Awards•Class wins for updated Golf and up! at Auto Express Awards

•Judges praise Volkswagens' quality, comfort and space

•Latest major honour for multi award-winning Golf

Milton Keynes – The updated Volkswagen Golf has added another prestigious prize to its collection with news that it has been crowned Compact Family Car of the Year in the annual Auto Express Awards.

The latest iteration of Volkswagen's biggest selling model to date which features the option of all-new engines, more technology, improved connectivity and revised styling, today adds the Auto Express title to a host of recent award wins from the likes of Autocar, HonestJohn.co.uk and DieselCar.

Commenting on the Golf's victory, Auto Express Editor-in-chief Steve Fowler said: 'The evergreen Golf is back with a bang, thanks to upgraded engines, a new infotainment system and revised trim levels. It still sets the standard for comfort, refinement and upmarket appeal. It's practical, too, with more than enough space for most families, plus numerous thoughtful touches that make living with the Golf so easy.

'Inside, premium materials, solid build quality and a logical layout instantly make you feel right at home. And on the move the Golf delivers a compelling blend of comfort, refinement and driver engagement, while the revised engines offer a strong mix of performance and refinement.'

Steve added: 'Over 40 years in the making, the perfectly evolved Golf retains its place at the top of the family hatch tree.'

Emerging from Volkswagen factories around the globe at an average pace of one every 40 seconds for the last 43 years, the brand's updated family favourite arrived in UK showrooms here towards the end of March.

Meanwhile the latest Volkswagen up! city car, revised in 2016 and now boasting a refreshed exterior design, the option of a new 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged engine offering up to 90 PS and extra equipment as standard, is also a winner with Auto Express.

Claiming the Auto Express 2017 City Car of the Year award, the up! is praised for its quality, refinement, generous interior space and high-end equipment options.

Steve Fowler said: 'Build quality is still first rate for the sector, while CO2 emissions as low as 96 g/km and claimed fuel economy of 68.9 mpg mean the up! delivers motoring on a shoestring. The up! is fun to drive and surprisingly mature for a small car. The suspension smooths out all but the worst roads with remarkable composure.

'The up!'s packaging is a masterpiece, with more than enough space inside for four adults as well as a decent 251-litre boot. It excels around town and is easy to thread through tight city streets and park in small spaces, thanks to its compact dimensions. But with features such as cruise control and heated seats available, allied to the impressive refinement, the car isn't in the least bit taxing on longer journeys.'

Today's up! range also includes the electric e-up! which adds the option of zero-emission driving to the car's compelling mix of attributes.

Receiving the award on behalf of Volkswagen at the Auto Express Awards last night (Tuesday) was the newly-appointed Head of Marketing for Volkswagen UK, Geraldine Ingham.

Geraldine said: 'To hear the UK's biggest-selling automotive magazine speak so warmly about two of the most popular models in the extensive Volkswagen line-up is very gratifying.

'Today's updated Golf, and the recently revised up!, are to my mind both examples of the very best Volkswagen design, engineering and manufacturing. Both are packed with innovative technologies in their respective market segments and I'm pleased that the cars' many advantages have once again carried them to prestigious award victory.'
