Title Race Wide Open After Young & Marzorati Take Wins At Pembrey

Title Race Wide Open After Young & Marzorati Take Wins At PembreyJack Young (Belfast) and Max Marzorati (Harrow) shared the victories in two superb Renault UK Clio Cup Junior races at Pembrey Circuit on Sunday. Young leaves the Carmarthenshire circuit the new championship leader but he is one of just seven drivers who could still be crowned Champion in next month's season finale at Brands Hatch.

Young led race one from start to finish for his and his MRM Racing team's first Clio Cup Junior victory. He also set the race's fastest lap for two bonus points and therefore a maximum score…

Second, achieving his first podium result in the category, was Harry Gooding (Bridgwater) while third went the way of JamSport's Ethan Hammerton (Northallerton) who was only just ahead of Team Pyro's fourth-placed Marzorati at the line.

Marzorati would lead race two all the way but he had to soak up enormous pressure from Young who, having taken the lead briefly, eventually finished behind in second, again with bonus points for setting the fastest lap. Hammerton added another third place finish.

All added up it means that Young has moved into the championship lead ahead of Marzorati, JamSport's Gus Burton (Colchester) – who finished seventh in both races at Pembrey – and Hammerton.

However when the championship's all-important two-dropped-scores rule is applied – ie each driver deducts their two worst scores – it is Marzorati who takes over at the top from Young, Hammerton and Burton.

All four have a realistic chance of winning the title at Brands Hatch (Sat 18-Sun 19 Nov). Using the dropped score rule to their advantage so, too, do WDE Motorsport's Connor Grady (Smallfield), JamSport's Louis Doyle (Chorley) and Gooding.

The eventual Champion will win a free registration into the senior Renault UK Clio Cup which races lives on ITV4 alongside the high profile British Touring Car Championship. It's a prize valued at £18,000…

Elsewhere there were other fine performances at Pembrey. Pyro's Lorcan Hanafin (Guiseley) qualified on pole position for both races to make it five poles out of a possible six in all, while JamSport's TJ Rodriguez (Rayleigh) showed sound progress on his championship debut.

Championship points: 1 Jack Young 154; 2 Max Marzorati 147; 3 Gus Burton 132; 4 Ethan Hammerton 129; 5 Connor Grady 120; 6 Louis Doyle 111; 7 Lorcan Hanafin 95; 8 Harry Gooding 82; 9 TJ Rodriguez 26.
